Hire a compressor and gun. Easier, faster and provides a finish that is easier to flat no matter how bad your technique is. Visit Autobody 101 and beg borrow and steal an air compressor. Auto paint dries way to fast for a foam brush and the brush will dry as you paint resulting in a lot of dragging and a lot of brushes.

Wow, Curtis, your car and my car look like twins. I just love my white cars and own three different ones, but only one is an MGB roadster with chrome luggage rack and Minator wheels like yours.

So this thread caught my eye...figured Id chime in for any help I could be.

I did auto paint and body work all the way through highschool, college and have worked for some professional shops. I am doing all the bodywork on my B. Paint is much like anything else, 90% of the work is in the prep. The biggest part of the other 10% is quality painting equipment and a perfectly clean environment to paint. As I currently lack the perfectly clean environment, I am taking my B to a shop to be painted and cleared. I will have an excellant product at the end after my time on the bodywork, primer and 1700-2000 in paintshop costs.

I would suggest, like the others that you take it to MAACO or something similar. If you truely do have the body ready for paint you will be very dissapointed with any roller applications. Granted, I'm used to seeing only pro jobs but I have never seen a roller application that I liked.

Also, if you use spray cans there are problems with this. A spray gun does 2 things very very well to give you a nice coat of paint. First, it atomizes the paint much finer than anything a can of spraypaint can produce. The other thing that it does is lays down a nice "fan" pattern that a can cannot produce. A can will only produce a circle pattern.

Lastly, when you spray a car the environment must be VERY clean. Any dust or dirt floating in the air will contaminate the topcoat and show poorly.

Good Luck! Hope whatever you do turns out nice!

Some of the links that I ran across mentioned a product called Fleet Penetrol. Lowes has it by the quart. It apparently is a self-leveling additive that extends the drying time and allows the paint to flow and remove brush and roller marks. Not tried it yet, but have some "experimental" panels to play with this fall.

In reply to # 2157210 by BWO Ironskull Your best bet, go to Maaco. We got my brothers car painted there for $175 and it looked great! We did all the work to make sure the body was good. Do all the filler and taping yourself, don't let them do it. Then just let them spray it. Honestly, it looks like a $2,000 paint job, just probably wont last as long but it looks great!

They will try to get you for around $450. Just tell them you called other Maaco's and they quoted you $175, will they match it.

hope that helps

A friend of mine waxes hi maaco paint job every other weekend and it still looks great ten yrs later. ;-)

The name of the game in any painting regardless of whether it is car, boat, house or anything else you can think of is, preparation, preparation, preparation. Did I mention that preparation is kind od important when painting? Maaco will do a good job is spraying paint but they simply spray right over what is there for their cheap price. I have seen dirt dauber nest sprayed over as well as rust and chrome.

If you are willing to strip the car, sand and prime, they will do a pretty good job. I have seen people paint cars and trucks with rustoleum paint as well as cans of spray paint for automobiles that looked great but they all had one thing in common and that was? PREPARATION

the spray cans were for under the hood, trunk and door jams...and then later, the engine bay

If you aint got no money.
And if you need transport.
And if you got a job you need to get to.
Then if you can find it, then maybe.
You need a Rustoleum paint job!

Just my 2 cents, but as a sailer I've heard of folks doing a fairly decent brush paint job using long curing poly paints on their boats. But that's usually a large white boat with no clear coat on top. I've had pretty good finishes from rattle cans on projects just a little smaller than an MG.
