Fixing the MBG

Ive had some unfortunate problems with my daily driver and will be forced to rely on the MG to get me around campus this semester while i mend my Saturn.

Ill be driving a 1980 MGB, and need to fix a few things before im able to run it without any issues.

#1: The alternator/voltage regulator took a crap on me recently. Ive ordered a new one and it should be here in 4 days. Until then, ill be riding with my saturn's battery hooked up to the MG's in the back.

#2: I just noticed that the dash just stopped working today. The gas, temp, and tach gauges dont work, along with the blinkers, and the rad. fan. I dont know what caused all of that to quit in one night, but ill need some direction as to how to fix it all. I may just wire the fan to a separate switch just i dont toast the motor.

Im capable of doing most mechanical and electrical work on a car(especially one this old), but im only experienced on newer cars(OBDII, ha)

Ill poke around the site looking for previous topics on these issues.

Thanks,
Alex

i did unbolt the coil and the coil amplifier underneath last night when i was searching for an external volatage regulator(since i didnt know it was in the alternator) Ill go see if i knocked a wire loose.

well i went to check the fuses and accidentally jumpered between 2 terminals. When i did, the wipers and fan turned on. Heres a pic of what made everything run again:

im half tempted to just stick a maxi fuse in there and run it like that.

Common problem. The fuse holders get corroded, loose their grip... whatever. Sometimes just wiggleing them restores power to the circuits.

MGB in place of a Saturn??? I have an 03 LW300 and I hope it never comes to that. eye popping smiley

You know, it's just a car, but I find it interesting that you would register (today) on an MGB enthusiasts' website and ask for help, then make a statement like that.

Hope you get your Saturn running again soon.

Life is a state of mind.

you could always just walk or take the bus. After you figure out just exactly how old your MGB is. Oh, and clean up the dirty dash, its buggin' me.

I want to drive my saturn. I hate this car as a DD. Its ruining my back and irritating the hell out of me.

Now when the time comes that i only have to drive it when i want to, then ill learn to love this bouncy, slow, and attention getting turd again. And maybe ill have the motivation to actually make it nice.

well it seems your bouncy, slow, and attention getting turd is getting you where you need to go - cant say thtA for your Saturn POS.

Personally any desire I had to help you figure things out left when you made the derogatory statement about the very cars we enjoy driving.

Obviously you need to take what i have to say with a grain of salt and not get butt hurt when someone says something about the car you love. As a saturn owner, i understand that concept well.

Well if nothing else interesting happens, i wont.

Ive figured out most things on my own by reading and then doing. Of course I've probably pissed off half the viewers with my attitude/demeanor. Oh well. People are easily upset over anything these days.

Sincerely,

After driving several Saturns over the years--my family's had most of the range (SL, SL1, SL2, multiple Vues, an L, Ion, SC, etc.) I can honestly say that if my MGB was in the shop...I'd walk or take the bus :p
