Restoration Progress Pictures of my 1976 B

Hello All -

I just wanted to share with the MGE group some of my progress pictures of my 1976 B, I have been restoring since 2009. I hit another milestone with the majority of the exterior trim now back on the car (except for the side moulding). The under hood mechanicals and brake lines need to be installed along with the whole interior. The attached three pictures are from three phases - today, primer in 2011 and bare metal in 2010.

Jeff

Hey Jeff is that Harvest Gold? Don't see that too often on a RB car. Looks nice.

.....very nice car Jeffery. Thanks for sharing. Would like to do the same to my 74.5 but it will have to wait for now. Working on a "rolling restoration" with emphasis on the mechanical restoration part. The further I get and the more cars I see on this site the more the little dents and scratches bug me. Did you do the work yourself?

Jeff,

Looks like you are making good progress. I completely understand what you're up against and what a journey it is. I've been on my 69 restoration since 10/2009. I figure I've got about a year to go but I'm not on any time frame. Enjoy the journey because you are going to have a great car when you are finished.

It's gone from looking like a Delorean to a real B. Great job.

Hi Lou - Thanks - Yes it is Harvest Gold. Only difference from the factory finish is that it is basecoat and clearcoat instead of the single stage paint. Very fortunate to have a 1976 in this color because the factory discontinued it early in the model year and replaced it with Sandglow. My car was built in October 1975 so HG was still available and I also got the 50th Anniversary trim which was available only thru December 1975.

For all of you that complimented the HG color, a major THANK YOU. Jeff and I feel a little like outcasts sometimes. Last club meeting my wife overhear a couple say "what a crap color" in reference to our car, whilst she was standing nearby. This from the owners of a poorly duplicated Citron re-spray... devil smiley

Hey Jeff when restoring it did you add a front swaybar? My buddy Dana Casko on here installed one on his 76 and he said it made a world of difference. It's not hard at all since the bolt holes are still in the frame for it. I can vouch for him for i've driven his car and you can flat beat the snot out of it in the curves.

If you haven't installed one, you can do it now as well. Don't have to take the car apart to do it.

Hi Lou, that's a coincidence you mentioned that!!!! Picked up a used one from a later model B and it was installed last week. British Leyland removed them for the 1976 model year, but the frame was all pre-drilled and it bolted right on. I also replaced the stock wishbone suspension with the Negative Camber Wishbone set (Moss 264-038) that is slightly longer and it supposed to improve cornering performance. I really excited to test out the modifications and hope it improves my B's handling.

I also LOVE the colour and so glad you kept it the same. The anti roll bar will also help tremdously. Just out of curiosty were you tempted to convert to chrome bumper since you were so stripped down to bare shell? I left my 75 GT Jubilee the same height but the 78 I have lowered both have the RB. I found lowering has always helped give it the steady early car feel but the Jub being such a rare beast left it as it came. Good show thanks!!

John - Thanks, I love both chrome and rubber bumper cars. But I like to keep them original so when I bought the 1976 I knew I wanted the rubber bumper car and never planned to convert it. I still may pick up an earlier chrome bumper car in the future but it has to be be factory original. I actually like the look of my gold color contrasted with the black bumpers and top. I think chrome & RB both are uniquely beautiful and love to have both in my garage.

This car has come a long way and looks great. Great job.

As far as colors go, I think you wife should proudly claim ownership. Tell the others that if they want to be snobby, they've pick the wrong marque. The jaguar club rally is next month and they can hang out there.

Obviously the color brings back fond 1970s memories to those who have any.

And to that end, a reminder let's keep those rubbers on.

Cheers, b

Love the HG choice. I am sure it looks great with the clear coat.
