1978 MG MGB
My oldest daughter got married last Saturday. The wednesday before, I was informed that they wanted to use my roadster for their getaway car! And oh, can I teach the groom to drive a stick? Well, I couldn't say no, and he was a quick learner! The weather though was over 100 degrees every day, and I had to drive the car over 2 hours in the heat to get it to the church, and back again the next day. Still, both the car and the wedding went perfect, and I was honored that they thought enough of the car to ask for it (although they could have asked a lot earlier!)

Great story. You and they will always remember the day and the 'B' helped make it special.

Life is a state of mind.

Congratulations!!!!!

On a side note...what is it with people not knowing how to drive a manual? It's not happening in my family!

I like the second pic, looks like the Bride is driving on the correct side of the car, but on the wrong side of the road.......................chuckles.

1968 MGB Purchased already dis-assembled which is why I'm often ignorant about what some parts are, and even more ignorant of where they go.

The white car really suits the wedding.
Yeah, what is it with a full grown male not being able to drive with a manual box?!

I've had grandkids refuse to learn to drive manual. Saying they'll never have to.

Good reason to not let them drive the B. (one of them totaled 3 cars within 18 months of getting a license!--mostly teh result of bing in the wrong place at the wrong time, but they were helpless and totally useless when it happend. no connection between them and the car. "the refrigerator broke, mom".)

Congrats to the bride, gropom all parents and of course the star of the day - your MG.

I hate driving an automatic - cannot late brake and downshift into corners, you styand on the gas, and they "automatically" shift down a gear, even when not needed.

As one of my heroes once said "Give me a Six or an *, a 4 Speed mate. The dents and the dust and the grasshopper guts'

On a side note...what is it with people not knowing how to drive a manual?

Because you don't have to anymore...... Almost all of my last 30+ cars have been manuals
the only exception have been my tow vehicles. However in the past 5 years I have noticed a
trend.... it is almost impossible to sell a used manual car. My last 3 cars have taken
a long time to sell and 90% of the people walked away when they found out it was a manual.
The good thing is that used car dealers ALSO have problems selling manuals - so you can
pick them up at a better price.

So - my last car I bought was an automatic - which I was dreading BUT autos have come
a LOOONG way. I am liking the experience - the engine-transmission combination is excellent
(It's a VW with the 1.8T and auto-stick). The trans is closer to a manual than an auto - ie
it's not at all mushy - the changes are crisp, direct and happen instantaneously. Oh - and I
get 30-35 MPG.

So.... manuals may be going to same way as the DoDo. I'm starting to think that there may not
be any advantages any more. Now - I'm not saying EVERY auto is good - I drove a Calibre with
the CVT - i hated it. But the VW/auto-stick is quite impressive.

People should not be allowed to get a marriage license before learning to drive a manual car smiling smiley, I teach my daughters to drive manuals before even thinking in driving an auto, once they learn in the manual they can choose what to drive, so far they have chosen the LBCs

I have one of those VW DSG cars. I don't like it.My wife drives it, but she would rather have a manual also. It gets 40 mpg so we don't complain too much! I do have a 2003 Expedition tow vehicle, but it's only used when I need the trailer or have to transport 2 families.

Well since this thread has been completely derailed.

Congrats on them with taking the little car out as the getaway car. My wife and I rented a newer Mini Cooper for our wedding a couple of years ago, but had one of the forum members here allow us to use their MGA for our engagement pics.

As to not being able to drive a manual. My wife prefers them and currently owns one, and we both are very firm in ensuring our daughter will learn to drive a manual. I mean, if you learn a manual you can drive anything on four wheels.

As to manuals declining in sales, BMW's next M5 won't have a manual, auto only. But Ford is seeing an increase in manual transmission builds for the new Focus and Fiesta.

I was selling a manual transmission Ford Focus a few years ago. The man wanted to buy it for his granddaughter, liked the price, drove it, etc. His wife insisted he not buy it because their granddaughter needed an automatic because she would be texting, and shouldn't be messing with a gear shift lever.
