Oil leak at Clutch slave fork boot

I think in saying that right, it's the boot where the clutch fork comes out of the bell housing and connects to the cough slave. While trying to tackle my seemingly endless oil leaks, I noticed that where the boot connects to the bell housing was not sitting properly and all the components around the slave cylinder were covered in oil.

My question is; how tight is the fit supposed to be between the boot and the bell housing? Also, is that transmission oil or engine oil that is leaking? The boot is the oval style and when I removed it from the bell housing I noticed that there was a part that was kinked and likely was not sitting properly. I just want to make sure this matters before I replace it.

The rubber boot fits into the bell housing opening with a flange on the boot that is a friction fit. Not too tight - not too loose.

My first guess is clutch fluid from the slave. Do you need to top off you clutch master frequently?

Second guess is the oil seal to the transmission.

When I replaced my boot, it was a very very tight fit and a PITA to get in place.

Seeing oil come out of the boot isn't good, you may have a leak from either the front transmission seal/gasket or rear engine seal/gasket. To access or confirm, you need to pull the lump/trans.

Is it possible that your engine is just leaking from the front of the car, then blowing back onto the boot? That would be a lot better, as it just needs to be wiped off.

Hoping someone else has a better, less PITA answer than me...

I would wipe it off and confirm if it's brake fluid or not.
If you clutch master is constantly low on fluid, that's it, Easy to rebuild the cylinder and cheap.
If it's not it's either the trans or engine. hard to tell. On my '77 I am getting engine oil back there all the time and it leaves a nice puddle when parked after driving.
I was told by the PO it was the trans. But after watching it for a long time I am convinced it's the rear main seal.
BTW most mgb trans will have engine oil in them.
Brake fluid smells and tastes WAY different than oil

Ok so I'll do my best to answer:

1) I'm certain it's oil, not clutch fluid. However, as for it's origion, there are plenty o possibilities.
2) I'm pretty sure my rear main seal is leaking as well, but it's small, tolerable and very hard to fix. I can see where that oil comes off the back of the sump pan and down the middle of the bell housing. The oil near the boot appears to be running from the boot to the slave cylinder.
3) the fit on my boot was pretty loose, I was able to get it out of its fit with the bell housing by turning the boot, it slid in and out several times with no problem so it's likely in need of a change.

Does the boot retain oil or just prevent contaminants from getting in the bell housing?

If its from the gearbox front mainseal .. oil will be clean.
If from engine rear seal... more than likely discoloured/dirty.
Boot is to keep crap out of the bell housing... not to keep oil in!

It's the rear seal, comes out dirty. Boot info was what I needed. Thanks!
