A question for the experienced paint guys

Good morning:

Recently, I applied a few coats of PPG’s OMNI MAE acrylic enamel with hardener onto the car after replacing fenders, sills etc. Waited a couple weeks for full hardness. Recently started color sanding and buffing. The paint flattened out well after a 600 – 1000 – 1200 – 1500 progression using 3M imperial paper. Finished with Dupont polishing compound followed by 3M glaze and a quality carnuba based paste wax.

My questions.

1. Not having a load of gun time there were a few runs. These were cut down with a razor blade a couple days after painting. Wet sanding leveled them well except that there is an obvious slight color change where the run was. That is, the paint is a slightly lighter shade shaped in the profile of where the run was. Why is this so?

2. The Dupont polishing compound results in so-so results. Was applied with my Harbor Freight 5 inch polisher. The gloss is O.K. but no where near as good as the original “as sprayed” paint gloss. Is there a better product for polishing AE?

First, concerning the polishing- you need to make sure you use a buffing compound before using a polish . I like 3M 06085 with the appropriate wool pad. Then follow with a polish, and so on up to a fine wax or glaze. That'll get a nice deep shine with no hazy look to the paint.

Concerning the shade variation in the area of the run, that is a characteristic of acrylic enamel. I can't remember if you mentioned what color your car is, but it's usually more pronounced with lighter colors. The pigment concentrates in a heavy spot of paint such as a run or sometimes a heavy sag . Picture opening a can of paint that has been sitting without stirring it- the heavier pigment is on the bottom, with clear resin or binders on the top.

Edit- I just looked back and noticed that you compared the gloss level after buffing to the unbuffed level of gloss, rather than saying it was necessarily a low gloss or hazy finish. There is a bright gloss on fresh, uncut paint that some painters call a "redneck shine "- it is in your face bright, but not very deep. . Once you cut and buff the car, that " in your face " shiny paint look will diminish a bit, but once you work up through the steps, making sure every step is thoroughly done before going on to the next, you will have a nice deep finish that you can almost read a newspaper in that still has a ton of gloss to it.

Thanks for the reply Henry;

Yup, the "redneck shine" threw me a bit. You're right about the lack of depth.

I have some Mguires M10508 rubbing compound that I'll try before the Dupont polishing compound. The paint color is new racing green BLVC25.

What speed are you running the 5 inch at?

Maybe too slow at the outside rim.

I use a 7 inch foam or 9 inch lambswool.
