automobile designer - rip

Just saw that Sergio Pininfarina passed away yesterday in Turin, aged 85, often called the Godfather of Italian car design.

I know that it might seem a bit odd to post this on a Brit forum, but the Italians and particularly the house of Farina had and still have a huge influence on the shape of almost all automobiles, even the British ones.

Sergio's father, who started the business in the Dark Ages, gave him the Ferrari account when he was still in his twenties and the rest is history.

I am certainly in love with home grown cars, like the E-Type and the MGB, but I believe that the majority of the very best of all automobile designs came from the imaginations of Mr. Pininfarina, Nuccio Bertone, who passed away in 1997, and Giorgetto Giugiaro who is now about 74.

Yeah, Jack - I saw that, too. Wasn't MGB designed by Italians?

Nope, but the hard top section of the GT was worked out by them.

MGA looks to have some Italian in it?

I agree, a very influential designer although some of his work (Farina Magnette for example) hasn't aged very well.

Very sad news, one of the legends of the design industry.

The design of the B was initially handed to Frua in 1957. At the time the brief was to design a coupe, project EX205/1.

Pininfarina did quite a few proposals for MG including ADO34 and EX234.

The roofline of the gt and its amazing Italian lines are what brought me into lbc's. I frankly don't really care much for the non gt versions of the mgb. I follow the designers more than the engineers and have a gugario design in the garage right next to the gt's. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep collecting these pieces of art. RIP Sergio.
