Eddie,

Most agree that a 180 stat will allow the engine to run more efficiently than the 160. And if you're in South Burlington Vermont and drive your car in the cold winters up there, I'd suggest running a 192/195 in the winter for better heater performance. BTW, you can use a plain old 1970's Chevy V-8 thermostat (cheap...) rather than pay for a British-specific stat... winking smiley

These engine run better hot. If you are experiencing overheating problems? There is other solutions to your problem.

190-195, especially for those having cold winters and driving at 55 MPH when the engine have no chance to reach its ideal temperature.

190° - 195° year around. The thermostat has very little affect on the maximum temperature that the cooling system will run at, only the minimum temperature. I run a 195° thermostat in our MGB and have no overheating problems with it at all (of course, we live in the Puget Sound area where it has been only 72° for the past week, while the rest of the country has been baking), in fact we have never had an overheating problem regardless of where we have driven the car, including Southern California.
Cheers,

Eddie,
A number of years ago I attended one of John Twist's February Tech Seminars. He clearly explained the operation of the T-stat and it's relationship to higher engine temp within reason and not over heating. The bottom line is that the engine runs better at higher temps. He recommended a 195 degree T-stat in my 1980 MGB. I have been running the Wax-stat 195 degree for six years now with no overheating issues.

I live in NE Indiana. The temps for the last few weeks have been in 93 to 105 degrees. I have driven the MGB over 250 miles in the last few weeks. The temp gauge does run a little to the right of middle in stop and go traffic at 100 degrees. My original electric fans have only come on twice and then only for a couple of minutes.

The original factory recommendations called for 160 in summer climates, 195 in cold winter climates and 180 (or 185F) for all round driving. BUT - the original recommendations didn't deal with modern oil. Modern oil can take higher temperatures without breaking down - especially synthetic oil.

So, I like 180 or 185F myself. But I can't argue with the 195F recommendation either.
