Is there a replacement available for the lower gasket on the steering rack for a '76 rubber-bumper MGB? Moss has the top gasket, but I don't think they are interchangeable. I have a gear oil leak from that area. I don't have plans to switch over to grease. Can I buy a new gasket, or make one? Do I need one - can I just use some Permatex to make a gasket and seal it up?

the lower is a paper gasket the upper is a lip seal, when I rebuilt mine I just cleaned up the gasket with some carb cleaner and used some sealant on it and reused it.

current changes-
Delco 63 amp alternator, Energy/Prothane suspension bushings, front to rear, JVC deck with IPOD controls, new Moss radiator, ADCO front 7/8" sway bar, OD black label trans, chrome bumper conversion, tan leather interior, AA wire block.

future mods-VTO 8 spoke 15x6 wheels (on order)

Aquired parts-
snug top

I don't know if it is OEM or not, but my steering shaft lower bearing protrudes from the casing about 0.5 mm. Paper gaskets are useless as it won't take up the "slop". What I wound up doing is getting some cork / rubber compound gasket material, about 1.5mm thick and making my own gasket from it.

I thought my rack was leaking from there but it turned out to be the pinion shaft seal, it runs down and looks like it comes from that area.

X2 on both Herb and John's comments. If you overfill the rack, it tends to come out of that upper seal until it reaches the appropriate level. winking smiley
