question about late model overdrive control switch

I'm getting ready to plug the engine and teransmission into my wife's '77 B. I found what appears to be a good, used overdrive for it, but the wires coming out of the gear lever have been cut/broken/mangled and "spliced" (ends of wires twisted together and taped over) by some putz. I need to take the assembly apart, to replace those wires, but I'm afraid of busting something if I do it wrong.

Can someone give me the run-down for the disassembly of the shift knob w/overdrive control switch? The chrome nut at the bottom of the knob wants to turn, but only so far (obviously, the shift knob needs to come off, first.....but how?).

Thanks, guys.

Hello -

the top cap that has the lettering on it just pops off - carefully though as it is probably brittle and the aftermarket stuff doesn't fit or last as well. Then you can take the switch our and detach the wires. There is a nut in the bottom that spins loose (use an awl or something to reach down in there) and then the knob just lifts off. The chrome nut is there to tighten up the knob when assembled. The wires pass through a cut-out along the side "under" the threads. Hope that helps & good luck.

Bud,

The connectors on the wires are not your normal style connectors so you might want to consider re using them. I soldered mine onto new wire and added a heat shrink over the wires where they pass through the tranny tunnel to avoid shorting. YOu can also get some more room to fit the wires by running a grinder into the slot made to pass the wires through and making it a bit deeper. Othewrise they can be a PITA to get back under the gear knob and chrome nut.

The 16" wiring harness, complete with the special connectors for the OD switch, is available from Moss and VB for under $15. A good, time saving investment. This was out of production for a very long time and is well worth getting. RAY

What Ray said. Plus the proper part has a sleeve to protect the wires.

Yeah, I ordered the switch wiring Ray and Allan memtion from British Wiring, so I'm confident it will have the protective sleeve you mention.
