Tires mounted on original wire wheels

I'm having trouble finding a tire shop that will mount tires for me. All the chains refuse saying something about safety concerns. These chains have essentially killed all the independent shops so now what?

Have you called many repair shops inquiring?
San Antonio is a pretty big place. Surely someone must be able to mount and balance some tubed tires!
Forget the big stores - go small, independant.
Maybe a mobile type business?
Maybe a Euro shop?

Had the same problem in Fort Worth, refused at all the main shops but eventually found a small shop who not only fitted the tire and balanced but siliconed all the spokes not protected by the inner band. They even had the correct cones for the balance machine. Perseverance is all I can suggest unfortunately.

I just mounted and balanced all five of mine myself using an old set of tire spoons I poached from my father and an older Montgomery Ward bubble level. It works fine as that was the way it was done before tire machines and dynamic balancing. I actually prefer to do wire wheels myself to make sure some knucklehead doesn't damage them using a machine, as the newer tire changers could damage the wheel if the correct adapters are not used. You'd probably want to inspect the inner rim, spokes, the spoke band and tube at the same time anyway. I replaced my old inner tubes and the tube bands with 10 mil poly pipe tape which works really well, too.

Pete,
Bill at Olmos Park Chevron & Auto Center
3903 Mccullough Ave mounted and balanced my wires. He did a fine job mounting although his balancing wasn't too good. I wound up using my bubble balancer afterward with more success. He charged $100 to do the job which seemed kind of expensive but like you I wasn't having any luck anywhere else.

Just a thought, how about a motorcycle shop?

I don't know about the balancing part, but hand mounting is not actually as difficult a job as you would think. But you need a set of good long mounting spoons for proper leverage.

Just did one with my old Triumph motorcycle spoons. Piece of cake. That really brought me back!
