IVe got the gearbox and o/d out of the car now (its an early rb blue lable od). I dont know if the overdrive works or not as i never had it in use (i bought the car and pretty much took it apart - ive never had it on the road!).

What, in this state, can i check and how?

(I dont want to have to put it back in the car to find out it has problems!)

thanks in advance...

P.S. (Im going to change the gaskets, oil seals and clutch - inc roller bearing).

Wow! That's a genuine and certified used up release bearing!

You could rig up a test bench but I don't know that doing so would tell you much about the effectiveness of the pressures or the condition of the cone clutch. If I were you I would just replace the rear seal, along with the transmission front seal and gasket, and clean the strainer. You might reset the pump ball too, and hope for the best. Oh, take a few minutes and test the reverse lamp switch and the one for the OD lockout.

Thanks Jack - yeah - that bearing is so bad i thought part of it must have fallen out (before i checked to see what they are like!). I havent had the gearbox or od apart yet, so im a bit lost on what id have to do with :

I can probably figure out the reverse lamp one, but not sure about the pump ball and od lockout?

Greg, you may get some benefit from looking at the last half dozen or so entries of my journal. Same journey - older animal, but.....

Chris, and I love my overdrive!

I would pop the side cover and take a close look at the internals. Look for metal flakes and general condition. You cant look inside the OD unit but if anything is going on with it, any damage will show up in the main gear section.

with the bottom cover removed you can turn the output shaft and tell whether the pump is working or not. the od lockout looks just like the reverse backup light switch.
