Where to attach eng. hoist bridle?

Posted by beeryboats

When it comes time to pull the engine and trans, where is the best place to bolt the chain bridle? In my old GM V-8 days I would use the intake bolts. I've never owned one of those fancy jack-screw leveling bridles, but then again I've never pulled the trans at the same time. Any tips?

Lots of folks use the two valve cover mounting bolts. I think someone said the factory did this.

77 MGB - Four tone paint - some kind of electronic ignition - hood props - cheap tires - new springs all around - mixture of poly and rubber bushings - original exhaust - fuzzy seatcovers - stereo out of old F150 pickup - virtually no rust - right front wrecked and semi well repaired - just about right for me!

78 MGB - Done right by a good PO, and I only bought it. Tell Jim how nice it is. But I did put in a Datsun 5 speed.

79/65 MGB - Tubby - Carmine Red - V-6 - T-5
Going to do this one more right, less rat rod!

I used the leveler from Harbor Freight to reinstall my engine. It worked great. I attached it to the 5/16" bolts that hold the rocker assenbly in place. I was concerned about the strength of these bolts but didn't have any problems. When I removed it I just used a strong piece of rope.

Good Luck,

Bob

My own bar but these are the standard lifting brackets which attach to the valve cover bolts.

Use a chunk of 2" L channel bolted to the valve cover bolts. Drill holes at end for the hoist chains. Gerry posted a picture a ways back of his set up

Its not simply that "someone said" that the factory used the fore and aft rocker pedestal/cover bolts, they did. I have, still in the crate, a factory rebuilt GoldSeal engine. There is a lifting hook attached to each of the rocker cover bolts.

Now Barry. I didn't see the factory do it, so I heard it from someone. So, someone did say it!eye rolling smiley

Bob those are awesome photos! I would have never thought the rocker bolts would hold the whole mess either. I would never have pulled a Chevy 350 from the rockers!

The one tool I've always rented, but now I feel I may need to own, is an engine hoist. It just so happens that Harbor Freight has a one ton hoist on "sale" this week. I got to thinking the smaller hoist may be better for the MG as the car itself is smaller and the larger hoist may not fit between the front tires. What's everyone's opinion on this?

Buy it. Almost all of them I see in this forum look like HF. Be sure to get the twenty percent off coupon.

And they do fit under most cars well.
