Fuel problem!!! #1

So I just replaced my radiator this morning, no more overheating!! And drive to the laundromat without a problem. On the way home it starts sputtering in third, then completely shuts off. I dosconeccted the front fuel filter turned the key and ot fuel.. So I hook it up and try again.. Same problem. The pump runs when I switch the ignition, but fuel just isn't making the journey, well not enough... Any advice?

Well... you found your culprit, so off you go & rebuild or replace the pump. Don't worry too much, rebuilding an original style pump is a nice afternoon job (or a bit longer, if you want to polish and paint the outer body).

Well the pump is relatively new... I think maybe the line from the gas tank is clogged? I'm not sure but I may have filled her up and from the looks of the filter going to the pump it's a good possibility. I gonna try to blow it out and if that doesnt work I'm out of ideas :/

Ah yes... I didn't read your message well, sorry. Blowing back through the pump won't work - the SU pumps are one-way - so disconnect the feed from the pump and blow through there.

Alright I've removed the line from the tank to the filter that goes to the pump. Fit another line on the tank, blew through it.. Started her back up same problem. Drive, get to second or third sputter and die. Climbed out checked both fuel filters and they had fuel. I'm starting to think it might not be a fuel problem...

This may sound crazy, but my buddy used a tie-wrap to secure his rubber fuel line to the radiator hose to keep it out of the fan on his old Chevy. As soon as he put a load on the engine it would start to die off. The radiator hose got hot, swelled an cut off fuel to the carberator. Juat sayin' strange things happen.

Hi Joshua,

I would suggest that you remove the filter between the tank and pump. When the filter gets clogged and the pump stalls it will burn out.

Joshua - See the article, Fuel Delivery Troubleshooting Guide in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my web site at the link in my signature block below. And Herb is correct, if you have a SU pump, loose the filter between the tank and the pump as it can damage the pump if it becomes clogged.
