Flywheel modification for street B #1

After reading all the previous posts that I could find on the subject, it looks like the consensus is;
On a stock street B, if you want the best of throttle response yet retaining enough weight for good idle, etc., shave about 5 to 6 pounds off..... am i reading that right? Or is it so little improvement that I should just save the money?
79 B smog removed and HIF carbs.

79 RB Lowered, De-smogged, HS4s by Dave Braun & "Schlemmerized" dizzy. Pretty much stock other than that.

When I looked into it, it was going to cost about $200-$250 to get 4-5 lbs. off plus a balance. Fidenza aluminum is about $300'ish, much less weight. The majority of the people I spoke to (who own and use it on their street B) said they like it (no stalling issues and revs much better). I will be installing mine in the 2 weeks, so this is just what I read. Hopefully this isn't bad info, I'll let others chime in with their input.

IMHO, once you lighten a MGB flywheel, and then rebalnce it, you're getting real close to the cost of aluminum flywheel, which even more reduces rotating mass over a lightened stock flywheel, and lets the egnine rev quicker and the MGB is not exactly a quick rever, say when compred to it's smaller cousin, the 1275, so aluminum flywheel in my opinion is nice feature on the MGB, and if I wanted to reduce rotating mass, thats the route I would go, and did.

The main question, is this the only thing you are going to do, and if so, then I say leave the way it is, reducing rotating mass should be part of a performacne build, meaning porting the head, higher compression ratio, and not the only thing you do. To me it make little sense to do something that will make a engine rev quicker and higher, thats not built to do that, but if you done all the rest, then yes, by all means go for it, it will make difference. I always tell people performance is not one thing, it's a series of things.

Keith,

Most modifications when done on their own, will only net you a 1% improvement. You look at the money spent and don't feel any improvement in performance and feel screwed.

But, if as Hap says... you go through and do a performance build in which a dozen modifications adding 1% to 5% each are done... now you have 50% to 75% improvement in power, your butt dyno can feel the improvement and now you're a happy (but poorer) camper.

Yep, as easy as a bolt-on can be, considering that you have to pull the engine to "bolt it on..."

Frank, $350.00 here all day long for the 68-80 Fidanza aluminum flywheel, the earlier 3 snycro are bit harder to come by and cost a little bit more. I can also halp you with aluminum fywheel set up, as I have literally installed dozen of these. I even helped design some flywheel for Fidanza, mostly MG A series stuff. I've known Lou Fidanza and Jeff Jenkins at Fidanza for years.

Put a Fidanza on my 80B when I did the engine rebuild and love it. No complaints. Revs quickly, no driveability issues at all. I opted for the Triumph clutch plate as it has a bit more surface area than the Borg$Beck. That was a recommendation I read a few times regarding the aluminum flywheel but it may not have been necessary.
