Rick, know of anyone who has tried one of the late model Mercedes V6s with the MB automatic? They are common, smooth, durable, and have pretty decent power.

No, but that doesn't mean that someone won't try it.

The height/width of the block and the overall size of the transmission could be limiting factors.

Unfortunately , whilst they may fit, getting them to run, may be another matter, due to the engine electronics. Apparently they don't play nice, unless you have all the bits, including rear end, body control module, traction control etc, I'm sure there is somebody who can reprogram, but they are few and far between. People have swapped the SC AMG motor into regular Crossfires, and even SC V8's but from what I gather it's only a handful of people who can tame the electronics

Pooch, only problem you would have is the RTA.
They no longer allow the V8 conversion in the convertible MGB, only a GT.

Is this because the factory only did the V8 in a GT and not a tourer?

Are you privy to the new engineering rules as of dec 19 2011?

Called VSB14.

I am going thru all this now to get my model A with a commodore V6 passed.

I did not notice any particular car banned from any engine refit except for overall capacity of engine versus tare weight.

The rule states that as a base , you take the tare weight of a sedan in KG of the model you are doing (even though it may be a lighter convertible} and multiply that tare weight by a factor of 3 for a car with no separate chassis and a factor of 5 for a car with a complete separate chassis.

So, as I read it, a B roadster can have an engine up to a (GT tare weight times 3 equals cc).

What is a GT tare weight?....maybe a stock rover 3.5 is over the limit?

3500 cc divided by 3 is 1166 KG.

The engine in the ebay ad is stroked to 4200 cc but nobody would be able to tell unless they checked of which the prima donna engineers would not bother to check.

And VSB14 allows for engines of no more that 20% extra weight and/or 20% more power do not need to be engineered at all.

But of course, the rover 3.5 even in standard form is over the 20% power increase.

There are 6 items that are mandatory on pre '69 modified cars.

They are..

1 blinkers

2 screen washer

(these 2 items are standard on a B).

3 demister

4 collapsible steering column

5 2 speed wipers with high speed at least 45 strokes per minute.

6 retractable lap/sash seat belts.

This all pertains to pre '69 cars which is pre ADR.

Post '69 will have to comply with all ADR's pertaining to its year of manufacture.

Pooch, I have not checked up on VSB14. Just passing on comments from others on here and other forums.

Just having a quick look at the link. It seems to still allow the 3.5v8 in the GT as this was technically a manufacturers alternative engine, it was never an alternative in the Roadster and has always required engineers certification.

Thank you for the link, I'm hoping to get my ex US car registered in the next week or two. One interesting thing that has come from the new rules is that in now seems NSW RTA will now generally accept a vehicle which has been registered in Aus for more than 2 years as being compliant.. Hopefully the blue slip guy knows this and doesn't send me off to the engineer.
