Whoever the engineer/designer was who put the dashboard attaching bolt right above the steering column. I installed the dash fully loaded and wired, and the only way I was even able to START this nut was by crazy gluing the nut to the end of my finger and maneuvering into place.

I still need to sort out how to tighten the nut..any hintsconfused smiley Anyone have a rubber extension for their rachet?

77 MGB - Four tone paint - some kind of electronic ignition - hood props - cheap tires - new springs all around - mixture of poly and rubber bushings - original exhaust - fuzzy seatcovers - stereo out of old F150 pickup - virtually no rust - right front wrecked and semi well repaired - just about right for me!

78 MGB - Done right by a good PO, and I only bought it. Tell Jim how nice it is. But I did put in a Datsun 5 speed.

79/65 MGB - Tubby - Carmine Red - V-6 - T-5
Going to do this one more right, less rat rod!

The bleeping thing is started and finger tight. But I swear this is going to tax my creativity insofar as getting the thing tight!

Interesting that not much has changed in 25 yrs. They used to sell a product called finger wrenches similar to what you see below. By the time I got around to installing my dash and other stuff eons ago, they were gone. I would have thought some hobby outfit would have continued to make/sell them, but I guess not.

There are a couple of outfits that sell something with the same intent, but they may not be what you would find as useful.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.

Gee,thanks Peter. I wasn't feeling badly enough about my recent lack of progress and frustrations with the GT. Now I know there's a new problem when the dash goes in shortly. Yeah, thanks, really........

BTW, those finger wrenches are still available. A fellow club member bought a bunch a couple years ago. He may even still have an extra set.

The above failing, I am going to read this book so I can have super powers like this kid from the Movie "Chronicle". As you can see, being a teenager, he did get somewhat frustrated with his restoration project. I, on the othr hand, would use the power to crush lesser cars such as Triumphs, and use the special to get this bleeping dash nut torqued down while having a beer!

A pneumatic chisel applied to the top of the cowl in the right place may make accessing the nut a little easier. If you mis-postion the hole it should be easy to enlarge it enough to get you arm in there, from hand to elbow, and use a one inch drive pull bar.

If you have trouble with that, I suggest that you consult a good cardiologist for further advice,as I understand it they can now do a triple bypass though an incision made in the belly button.

FYI: Further research of my old flat-rate books reveals nothing about the factory time allotted to the work.

Ordinarily I wouldn't suggest this method, but since you are such a master welder, filling the opening with un-done beer cans should be a snap.

Jack

on my 75 when I installed the dash I slipped a rubber single connector over all the bolts , so they would not rub against any metal and secured the dash with the bottom clips. see you at Plunketts

I'm with Jack on the cardiologist. I just had a stent put into an artery supplying blood to my right leg by a vascular surgeon using an incision about 1/4" long.

The question is, how did the factory do this on the assembly line? I'd love to be able to go back and watch a number of operations to see how they did them. There is no way they could futz around for an hour trying to get one nut on.
