Early (Banjo) Differential Question 65 B

Greetings all,

I am working on the rear differential on my 65 MGB with a banjo axle. In the attached picture, items 11 and 13 are what I am replacing. When I took the gears out of the housing, I expected to find a fiber washer on the axle gears, but there are copper or bronze washers in there.

My question is, has anyone else run into this? If so, did you just replace the copper washers with the fiber ones? Just to clarify, I am not talking about the copper/bronze convex washers on the spider gears, but on the gears that the axle splines run into.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I figure I am going to stop working here in case I need to order something else.

Many thanks for any assistance, ridicule or finger pointing.

As I understand it, the later MGBs used the fiber washers and that's what the usual suppliers stock as replacements. If the copper ones aren't worn, I'd re-use them. That's the plan for my 60 MGA banjo axle.

My copper ones were not really worn either..so I reused mine on my 67

I've gone thru a lot of banjo diffs. never seen anything but copper. Don't see much wear either. I occasionally see cracks in the pinion convex washers.

Thanks for the information guys. I guess I will just leave the copper stuff in place. I am hoping that I can find the specs on what they are suppose to measure out at. The convex washers look okay, so I will give them a measure in the morning. Thanks again.
