What's that screeching noise? #1

Pulled the carb and manifold off of the 1800 and replaced the side panel gaskets. When I put it all back together, there's this screeching noise coming from the front of the engine. Not the water pump or the alternator. Vacuum leak? Any ideas?

Roger,did you pull the exhaust loose too,wondering if it's an exhaust leak. did you use a new intake/exhaust gasket at the head? also could be the dougnut gaskets at the down pipes coming off the exhaust manifold. Joel

Yeah, Joel, I took all that loose. Maybe I should tighten it up some. My catalytic converter is nothing more than a tube due to all the insides rotting out, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I'll check my exhaust. Thanks, Joel.

Quick check, remove the belt and see if the noise disappears.

Lane,
Does the screeching sound like a rubbing noise or hissing like a vac leak?

Front of the engine you say? Might try locating the noise with a length of rubber hose held to the ear.

Spray the belt with WD40 while it's screeching and see if it goes away.

It's not the belt. I took it off and ran the engine and still the noise. It's not a hiss. It sounds like something is rubbing, but nothing is evident. I used a stethoscope and still can't seem to locate the problem.

I had a similar experience when I rebuilt my 67 MGB engine; the squeal was intermittent (not constant) and sounded like a bearing squeeling from lack of lubrication. The cause: I had accidentally replaced the "vented oil filler cap" with a later model non-vented cap (they look very similar). This caused a vacuum in my oil sump created by the PCV valve which is connected to intake manifold vacuum. I believe in my case, the air was sucking in past the rear main bearing. Remove your oil filler cap and see if the screeching stops. -- Litch (Shofine)

Hi

The clutch release bearing can make a screeching sound when it's lost all the grease and is running dry, I know it's actually behind the engine but if your ears are anything like mine (worked in a heavy foundry for 33 years) then it'll be hard to tell the difference confused smiley

Here is the conclusion of this topic: I pulled that metal heat shield off of the first and second manifold bolts, reattached the manifold, and "Voila"- the noise is gone. I pulled all that environmental junk off of the engine, and man does it hum! Thanks to all who contributed.
