Car show Etiquette.

Over the past 40+ years I've been a car show exhibitor,
spectator, Judge at numerous car shows, Concours Judge
at Watkins Glen Vintage Weekend and also at the British
Invasion at Stowe. The first rule for Judges at any of
these eveents is:
DO NOT ToUCH THE VEHICLE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Ask the owner or representative of the car to do that
and THANK THEM when you have completeted your judging
and for bringing the car to the event.
Unfortunately not all shows adhere to this "rule".
The local chapter of AACA when juding my car a few
years ago at a local show never askeed me to open the
door but rather the judge not only opened the door but
slammed it shut when he had finished the judging. I took
him to task for that and told him that I would never enter
any of their shows in the future. It's not a matter of
rules, but rather a matter of respect for the car and the
owner who brought it to the event.

Just my two cents worth.
End of sermon.

In reply to # 2030459 by mgbanthony It's not only the younger generation. I've had fellow "enthusiasts" open the trunk, sit on a front fender, lean on an early B taillight and pop the lense out of the retainer, and get in the driver's seat and go through the gears.

To John Moore: No MGBs aren't Bugattis, and not all of my Bs have won national awards. I do however resent the heck out of anyone who touches my property without permission. Perhaps when you go through the inconvenience and expense of having scratches and light dents removed from a freshly restored B front fender as I have, as a result of a pompous a$^ "enthusiast" parking his 300 pounds on it at a car show you may find that you become a little more uptight .

My two kids have gone to car shows since an early age and were taught that "look but don't touch" was the appropriate behaviour.

I agree that letting a kid sit in your car gives him a great thrill and have no problem with that under my supervision. Adults should get their own toy.smoking smiley

Anthony,

Thanks for correcting my spelling, I appreciate your help! Speaking of helping, perhaps you and that other guy can pass copies of Emily Post's Guide to Etiquette at the next car show, I'm sure you'll be a shoe in for the "coolest geezer award". Or better yet, use your walker and rope off your MG, that should work nicely. Then again, it might not... most of those young whipper snappers listen to "rock and roll" and don't listen to authority! lolol Geeez...

Thanks John:

My sincere apologies if correcting your spelling was offensive. I could see how that could be the case in retrospect.

As someone who is actually physically disabled I really appreciate your sentiments, and actually I'm far from an old geezer. Ridiculing someone of any age who is dependent on using a walker is a little further out there than I'm prepared to go.

Bad karma!

Heck, I like to let the kids sit in the Frogeye.
I do check their hands and make sure no juice boxes enter.
Makes their day. Often the parents are shocked I would allow such a thing.
Now once I had about a dozen beauty Queens want pics with the Sprite.
I finally let them ALL climb into and on and against the Sprite for a photo shoot.
I didn't mind at all. NOW....the wife wasn't too pleased.

My Mk1 is just a driver so I try not to get all AR about it.

That's fine if that's your choice, but people should ask first. When I go to a car show and walk up to a car to look at it, I put one hand in my pocket and hold my camera with the other. I wouldn't dream of touching anyone's car without their permission; no matter what the model or condition. It's not AR, it's just good manners.

In reply to # 2030444 by JMoore I've been to alot of cars shows from simple cruise in's to concurs, I've never seen anyone just jump in a car or sit on a fender. It's those uncivilized people in Florida! lol

Being one of those uncivilized Floridians let me say I paid the bills, the title is in my name and if you don't ask then don't touch or you might get cold cocked. Forgot to mention besides being an uncivilized Floridian I'm also a redneck.

I had to run into a K Mart for something on the way back from a show with my TD and came out to find a middle aged man sitting in my car. When I asked what he was doing, he proceded to tell me that he had one and how much he enjoyed it. But that takes alot of guts to just get into someones car.

At a recent car show every kid in attendance touched my car, some even massaged the paint with their dirty hands (It made me want to kick their teeth in), but in all honesty if you don't want your cars to be touched, leave them at home, or hire some bouncers to keep people off, or at the very least put some physical barrier between the car and the attendants and put signs of "do not touch", you have to be smarter than them otherwise you'll die of a tantrum.

We all want to touch new stuff (new to us) and more so when it looks so nice, so you have to let these things go, or just go to shows where only classic car owners can go in, that would be fun eh?

People should really let this ugly topic just fade off into page 4, 5 or wherever.

I see a sponsorship opportunity for shows with etiquette challenges- perhaps a local detail shop would sponsor signs that put a few "First time at a car show?" signs around the showfield. These signs could politlely explain how to go about interacting with the cars. Some attendees may just not know any better, and if someone does commit a faux pas, it's easy for a car owner to point to a sign as their defense.

That's assuming they know how to read....or even care.
