new fuel tank

I have just purchased a new fuel tank for my 1969 MGB from Moos Motors. The tank arrived in bare metal, with some type of coating on it. When asked, the Moss rep said that it did not have to be primed and painted-the coating would be enough. I live in Phoenix, Az so salt/rust will not be a factor. Has anyone else installed one of these tanks without any paint, and if so, what were the results? Thanks.

Got mine from VB about 2 weeks ago, it is one of the Canadian made tanks. I just bolted it on, no prep was reccomended.

I replaced mine 2 years ago with a "Canadian". No baffles in it, but I'm not racing. Any way I scrubbed it with Dawn to get rid of factory oil, then put truck bed liner on it. Was going to prep the area under (above) the tank, but found clean factory gray paint, so I just installed the new tank. If it lasts as half long as long as the original that'll be 20 years! Not bad. The original was not all bad, and was going to have it cleaned etc. and the shop I took it to pointed out a new fuel tank every 40 years is not too bad!

If Moss gets theirs from the same supplier as Moss-Europe then I was told that they are powdercoated - this was for a #NRP2 http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=230 - it's installed but yet to have its first drink.

CKD 11/66 first registered 8/5/67 owned since 3/77. Undergoing nut and bolt restoration. Tartan Red (now). 18GB +40 balanced with almost all new internals. Peter Burgess big valve fast road head. Piper 285. TT exhaust. ARP everywhere. 123 ign. Needham 4synchro c/r box. Stock rebuilt/replaced suspension. Superpro bushes. New brakes all round including all pipes in SS flex. Interior redone. CAMS approved roll bar and side bars. Lots more. Hybrid of o/e and show/fast road car. Not for sale - it's my toy!

AFAIK, it is made of galvanized material as well as coated w/something.
* be very careful when tightening hard line to tank. Hold the tank fitting with a wrench before tightening the compression fitting. This tank has a filter on the bottom of the pick up tube, right?

FWIW - I had two of these tanks FAIL at this connection to no no fault of my own.
If it were me, I would install the tank with 2 of the easier bolts on each side, leave the filler neck and sender off, put in 2 gallons of gas and check for bubbles in fuel flow at the filter hose in engine bay. IF no bubbles, proceed with installation. I'm not saying yours will fail this test, just trying to save a little trouble shooting in future.

Just bolt it up and forget it for another 20-30 years.
Get a new sending unit, fuel filters and feel confident that there will be no more fuel storage issues.
Clean gas, hurray!

When I bought my '74 BGT nearly 5 years ago it had a similar replacement tank (bare metal with some kind of clear coating). Still looks like new with no signs of corrosion.

Mason,

I have a 74.5 that was bought new in Phoenix cars has been with me now for 8 years so all the time in the desert. The tank still is bare metal still bright and clean looking. Living in Phoenix you should have the same results. Don't toch the tank.

Paul.

It's the same external coating used on modern vehicle fuel tanks. It does not need to be coated, but it won't hurt anything if you wanted to paint it.

Personally, and this is just my opinion....winking smiley, I dislike the look of silver tanks visible on a vehicle. A lot of new cars have these. As much as I appreciate the coating applied to the tanks, the silver has to go.

There's quite a bit of a B tank that shows below the valance.
