Mine are red (over spray?) and some black. Looks like undercoating. This car is going to continue to be a driver.

Thanks
Pete

Factory made it body color. If there's undercoating it was applied by the jacka$$ dealer who wanted to extort a few more dollars from you.

If you drive the car, black undercoat is the simple answer. If you want, many of todays rubberized "Rock Guard" undercoats can be painted over. Truck bedlilner can be tinted to match the paint also.

Black. I scraped off all the original tar-like covering and then I painted them with POR15 and then Hardnose. The inside of the front wings have been painted a black chip guard - if you just use paint debris on the road that hits them will cause 'star' points in your paint on the outside. My B is not concours or o/e.

CKD 11/66 first registered 8/5/67 owned since 3/77. Undergoing nut and bolt restoration. Tartan Red (now). 18GB +40 balanced with almost all new internals. Peter Burgess big valve fast road head. Piper 285. TT exhaust. ARP everywhere. 123 ign. Needham 4synchro c/r box. Stock rebuilt/replaced suspension. Superpro bushes. New brakes all round including all pipes in SS flex. Interior redone. CAMS approved roll bar and side bars. Lots more. Hybrid of o/e and show/fast road car. Not for sale - it's my toy!

The original, factory method was to first apply a primer, then apply that "tar-like" undersealant some of you mention and then paint the undersealant, engine compartment, trunk (boot).....the entire unibody, actually......body color.
I've found 3M Body Schutz can be used to replicate the look of the original, factory undersealant and it is meant to be painted over, so it looks completely authentic, if done correctly. Also, it remains somewhat plyable and won't crack and allow moisture in between the sealant and the sheet metal.

Unless it's a concourse car that is more or less a trailer queen, undercoating them is a wise move. I wouldn't consider a person a jacka$$, as previously stated, for doing this! Here's the 72 I restored for my wife. PJ

That's beautiful, PJ. I think that what the previous poster was referring to was the black "crud" that many bodgers apply over dirt, oil & grease and which tends to hang down from the surface and form pockets which hold water against the steel, which tends to greatly accelerate the rusting of that steel.
Also, to many of us, the presence of a black undercarriage on a car that isn't black on the "shiney side" sets off alarm bells warning of the type of crudeness I mention above. When the undercoating is painted body color, it tells us that an effort was made to make the car appear original.
Those of us who've been around these cars since we were kids, back in the 60s, have painful memories of MGs on used car lots, which had been "detailed" by used car dealers, or by new car dealer's used car departments.....which meant that everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) under the bonnet, on the undercarriage and in the boot was painted FLAT BLACK. To those of us who knew the cars well, it shouted out "crude", among other things.
So, I think that might be why anyone restoring one of these MGs with a black undercarriage and a different color "topside" may set off some alarms among the Faithful.
