How to De-Gloss My Paint Job?

Help, I sprayed my center console with gloss vinyl paint. Now it looks like I doused it with Armor All. I want it to match the dull look of my dash. Never really liked that shiny look of Armor All.

So far, I am having a hard time looking for semi-gloss vinyl paint. Any other ways or methods to de-gloss this thing?

Could try sanding it with 1000 grit paper or now that it's painted maybe you could use a semi-gloss or flat clear.

First - spray a test piece.

Second - try wiping with a cloth dabbed in some solvent. I would try solvents such as a) Acetone, b) Denatured Alcohol (not rubbing alcohol), c) Paint Thinner, d) Goo Gone (brand name solvent)

TEST TEST TEST TEST as I cannot be held responsible for results that don't meet your approval. The cloth shouldn't be dripping with solvent. You'll have to test for yourself to get the desired end result.

If it is well coated with vinyl paint then you should be able to recoat with another paint. I would allow it to dry for at least a week first, longer would be better.

if the paint is on and cured you can 'mist' it with any other paint, say flat black... I am not recommending the process not will I take responsibility for the results but it would cut the gloss.

Since you have paint on it already, a matte or semigloss clear would tone it down to the finish your after. Test paints for compatability. Down the road look into SEMS paint for upholstery work. It will restore the OE color to vinyl, plastic, and carpet. Your local upholstery shop can point you to a supplier of SEMS.

I would just repaint it with a satin finish black from a rattle can

SEM paints (sold by body shop suppliers) have a variety paints( Spray cans ) that should work well,, but fist you might try a light sctch brite pad, that may kill the gloss to your satisfaction.

I used gloss black vinyl spray on the seats of a car a few years ago and it looked too glossy.

So I spayed another light coat of the same vinyl paint over them - a little more than a dusting, but not a heavy coat at all. That left a nice semi-gloss finish.

But you'll need to experiment to get the right look. Too much paint and it will still be too glossy. Too little and it won't be an even coat.

I agree with Dave, SEM makes plastic interior paints available in a variety of finish glosses, doesn't cost a ton and usually can be had at a good auto paint store if not the local auto parts.

matte is the finish you are looking for. You wont liek flat black anymore than the armor-all look.

I would just re-spray

SEM makes one color of black that matches OEM stuff. I'll try to get a picture for you when I get home from the club meeting tonight.

Thanks all for the responses and the great advice. I found a supplier of SEM products nearby and will look into it.

Try wiping with penetrol. Best deglosser there is.

Edit: I meant ESP (same company) Easy surface prep, deglosses oil base paint.

I wanted to thank everyone for their contribution to this thread. My problem was solved.

I did buy a can of SEM vinyl paint. Before I did anything with the SEM paint, I wiped the console with Goo Off, which did take off some of the gloss. Next I used a light scotch brite pad, which did the trick.

I did not need to use the SEM paint, but I may still try it later just too see if it has better results.

Thanks again folks!

I use SEM's Landau black dye on all my interior and engine bay parts. Perfect level of sheen.
