Exhaust system

I just removed the exaust system from my 77'. Front muffler was shot and the rear had some pinholes. Good thing was I used brass nuts on the downtube to catalytic converter a while back, so rust wasn't a problem.

I've got a replacement exhaust from the local Moss dealer, but was wondering if there is some goo or adhesive I should use inbetween the joints before bolting and clamping this thing together?

I haven't done anything in the exhaust department in a while to any vehicle. Do I simply fit it dry?

Thanks

Jude.

Yup and yup. Hang everything losely, line it up, and tighten it down. Oil on the clamp threads helps get things tighter.

I got a tube of exhaust pipe sealer at AutoZone (comes in a repair kit - I think it was about $3), smeared some of that around the male part of the connection before sliding the two together, then clamped. No leaks, and helps the two parts slide together better.

Be sure about the fit of the pieces before you connect them. I think the sections are probably intentionally made a little long so they can be cut to fit each individual application. I had to cut a couple of inches off the forward end of the rear pipe. Of course, I used a '74 system on a '78 car - but I don't think that made any difference.

Previous post mentioned putting rear clamps upside down for more clearance if you think you need it.

Or is that down side up!
