Anyone need a Sebring or custom body kit???

In reply to a post by Emil Wojcik Tony, even if you were to try to fit the original kit you made for your '69 on another '69, there will be few if any other '69s that it will fit perfectly. I'm positive that the prototype of the Sebring kits that are produced by others today fit the car they were originally made on perfectly, yet you still have most buyers of these kits complaining that they require custom fitting to their cars. These cars just weren't produced with the type of tolerances that would be needed to expect to have one fit without modification on any other car as well as it does on the car used to make the original. It's not just an issue of fitting specific years. Some will find the fit pretty close and may only require minor filing or cutting. Or they won't mind if it hangs over each side by 1/8", but others will find the fit to be off enough to require major work. It's just the nature of a project like this. If the kit's for something like epoxy-on fender flairs, where the flair is more or less centered over the wheel and the edges don't need to fit tight against a specific seam on the body, then this usually isn't an issue. But when talking about a panel like the Sebring kit, that needs to fit tightly against not only the top edge but also measure exactly from side to side and match each curve, it would be unrealistic to expect it to fit every car. It's been this way for decades with fiberglass kits and it's just something that the consumer needs to realize before they order a kit...from anyone.

Thanks for your input Emil. I will first say that I am not new to fitting body kits or dealing with fitment issues. I actually work for a major body kit manufacturer. I have also worked in the automotive design industry, designing and fabricating showcars and prototypes. So I know all about specific fit and finish. I also want to say that there will be some trimming here, and some trimming there, but not as extensive as the kit I got for my car. The front valance didn't fit on my car because it was the wrong shape. I think they may have taken it out of the mold too fast at the factory, rather than letting it cure for a day or so. As for the rear, I had the same issues with the shape being off. I also had major issues with the mounting. It was difficult to mount it to the body because of the tight area you are dealing with on the inside of the tail lights along with other areas that go along the inside of the trunk. I am going to try and solve this problem. Its going to be a bit of research and development, but I'm up for it. Alot of these problems are in how you make the molds and how you pull the parts out of the mold. The plan is to make a 3 piece mold of both the front and back while it is on the car so I can be sure the shape is exactly how it's supposed to be and all measurements are correct. As I stated before, I am going to need a donor car or have someone give me some measurements off their car, as I don't have an abundance of MGB's laying around. I also need to know exactly what fitment issues you have on your specific car or your specific year of MGB.

Dear Tony.

I like your B GT very much. I'm currently on a mission to get mine into the trim I want. I purchased a Sebring front and rear valance from Britteck. However, after an initial fitting of the Front, I decided to go with my original metal valance, hammered round and extended to meet up with the original metal fenders. So the Sebring front is available. I'm thinking $50 and buyer pays freight. This valance is as shipped to me except for some small 3/16th holes drilled for my orignal trial fitment. Nothing has been shaved off. So if anyone is interested....contact me here.

The look I'm going for is a bumperless 67 with seamless front and rear ends. I've cut down the backsides of the stock bumperettes for some nice looking protection (well more than the stock blade bumper alone offers)up front.

The rear valance is more of a challenge. I had to cut off the stock valance to get the Sebring valance to come close to fitting. Since no instructions come with these things I was curious as to how you got yours on. My B-GT suffered rear end damage sometime in its life. Right now it is relatively close to fitting, I've go two carriage bolts holding it to the bottom of the tail lights. I assume it is glued as well as bolted into place.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Dave

Sorry for the sidetrack.

Emil

A big problem with the Honeybourne Sebring fender kit is that it is still in a plastic state when packaged. Over the amount of time necessary to get it to the states, the fenders curl inside the box. The best way to make the fenders fit is to let them lay on the vehicle for a while till they have a chance to get back to their molded shape.

Tony.

Both the front and rear of the rubber bumper cars vary a lot. Between two cars of the same year we found about 1/4 -1/2" variance in the rear lamp areas. That is what prompted the Moss R&D team to supply the rear lamp fill piece for the chrome bumper conversion in multiple pieces, rather than as an assembly. The UK supplied bumper kit includes a fabricated piece, but it didn't fit well to either car and was not possible to adjust without a BFH. It almost may be better to supply the rear valence as a two piece unit with an overlap. Just a thought.
If you are in the neighborhood, I've got a 1979 and a 1978 with the rear bumpers off. Sorry, they are not drivable.

Kelvin

That is what I'm going for. A subtle design change. But I will also offer other alternatives for those who want to go a bit more extreme, but not obnoxious.

Thanks Dave. I attached a picture with arrows that point to where my specific issues were. Keep in mind I installed this kit about 5 years ago, so I am going off memory for what I had to tackle on the rear. The green line indicates the original cut line and/or recess where the stock, chrome bumper fit in. The blue arrows indicate the areas where I had to trim or add body filler. I remember trimming the vertical piece closest to the wheel well. I filled the area closest to the tail lights in order for the surfaces to match up. Other than those issues, I also remember not being able to get into the tight area of the trunk or tail lights where the body meets the sebring bumper. So I had to do some drilling on the fiberglass in order to attach countersunk screws, then I filled over the screws with body filler. I also remember thinking to myself that I could have done a much better job than what they sent me. Hope all that makes sense...

Hey Kelvin,
When you say 1/4 to 1/2" variances in the rear lamp areas, are you referring to the area directly below the tail light or the vertical area closest to the wheel well? (see picture above) That would also be great if I could stop by and check out your B's. It would give me a much better understanding where the fitment issues are on the other cars. Plus I'm much more of a visual person. What neck of the woods are you in by the way?

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the info on the Sebring rear. It appears I am following the same track you did.

Tony.

I'm in Ojai about midway between Hwy 5 and Ventura.

I've got a sebring rear valence fitted to my 1965 MGB race car plus probably a couple more unused ones that I was planning on installing on various vehicles. Also have a couple of the front valences lying around.

I tend to buy the ones from Moss that come back damaged in shipping. I know I need one for a project, then forget that I already have a couple.

I'm really interested in checking out your B's but the problem is I don't know the next time I'll be around your neck of the woods.

Here are some quick front valance design ideas I came up with for the B. If you see anything you like or don't like, any other ideas, or if you see something that should go on another design, let me know. Thanks!
