It is not the best picture, but at least you can see the B also! Drove her home on Monday, ended up about an hour and a half drive through residential, main roads and even 65 mph on the freeway. A long trip knowing she leaked a fair amount of oil and had dry-rotten tires. It is RHD, with the 998 cc and auto tranny. The PO spent the last few years learning some bodywork, replacing panels. Some rust bubbles are coming up on the doors, and there are a couple of other areas that are not perfect, but are not noticeable to the average passer-by.

I also aquired a 1275 cc w/auto trans (with overdrive!) in the transaction. Once the B is on the road, the 1275 will be the next project to rebuild and drop in the Mini. It should make a nice driver when done.

Since my BGT is down while I make it more reliable (brake overhall, rebuild carbs and so on) I picked this up to scratch my LBC itch. 73 TR6 with overdrive. The price was just too good to pass up. I will enjoy it for a few months and then sell it once my B is back up and running. The weather is just too nice here now so I couldn't go without a fun car. She is not perfect by any means, just a good running and honest car that hasn't seen a vacuum or wax in many years. A good detailing will do her wonders. Only thing I will need to spend any real money on is new carpet.

We have a good customer of ours that has decided to have us/him build a car from scratch. We actually started building this car about 5 years ago and he ended up paying what he owed and started a separate project abandoning this one. This past week he came and met with us and got the ball rolling on this build.

The frame has been powder coated, the suspension/brakes were built, and all the driveline has been gone through. The motor, overdrive, and carbs were built 5 years ago and wrapped in shrink wrap on the frame waiting to be started. We drug the frame back out of its hiding hole and cleaned it back up and unwrapped it. There are some rubber parts on the frame that will need to replaced again but over all it is still in great shape. The body on the other hand was stripped down and has been sitting ever since. We will be installing floor pans and sending the body to be worked soon. Luckily the body wasn't rusty other than the floor pans and was overall very straight.

Since we are teaming up with the customer on this one and going at his pace we probably won't have updates at a regular pace but we though we would share the progress where we can.

Yes, its a horrifying fact, but there are classic cars in my family that aren't MG's. My brother and dad each have a Vauxhall Viva and a Bedford Viva van. Recently someone told them that someone near us has a field full of old cars, including a few Viva's. So once I get back to my parents next week we are taking a trip there...the hedges are too tall for Google streetview so this is the best show I can get. Oooh to dream if there was an MGB V8 in there :D
Obviously, these are going to be relatively solid SoCal cars, but I want to understand the typical "problem areas" that I need to pay extra attention to in the body. It's probably best to PM me offline so we don't upset the forum police.

GM, Ford To Collaborate On New Transmissions
DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors and Ford are putting aside their longstanding rivalry to work together to develop a new generation of fuel-efficient automatic transmissions.

The companies said Monday that their engineers will jointly design nine- and 10-speed transmissions that will go into many of their new cars and trucks.

When transmissions have more gears, engines don't have to work as hard. That saves fuel. As long as the shifting is smooth, most customers don't give much thought to their transmissions.

The fierce rivals, which rank first and second in U.S. auto sales, say they'll save millions of dollars that can be spent on areas that set them apart from other automakers such as quieter rides and nicer interiors.

Neither would estimate exactly how much they'll save, but each said transmissions cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop. The more gears a transmission has, the more complex and costly it is to develop and build.

"While we still can be really competitive, we can collaborate where it makes sense," said General Motors Co. spokesman Dan Flores. "We will still fight every day in the marketplace over every sale."

The savings also will help the companies keep their prices competitive. Neither would say when the new transmissions will show up in cars and trucks, although design work already has begun. A previous venture to jointly design six-speed transmissions took about three years.

The companies will manufacture transmissions separately. They'll likely order parts from the same companies, saving millions more dollars, said David Petrovski, an analyst for IHS Automotive who specializes in transmission forecasting.

Generally, transmissions with more gears are more efficient because they allow engines to do less work to keep cars and trucks moving, while still having the power needed for acceleration. The maximum number of gears that Ford and GM transmissions now have is six.

Industry analysts say if engineered correctly, a nine-speed automatic transmission can raise gas mileage five to 10 percent over a six-speed model. For a Chevrolet Cruze compact, for instance, that would equal at least 2 mpg above the current estimate of 38 on the highway.

Currently, Ford and GM are behind in the transmission speed race. Several other automakers such as Chrysler and Land Rover have nine-speed coming out soon. Many automakers already have eight-speed transmissions on the road. Both GM and Ford said the joint research would help them develop the transmissions faster.

All three Detroit automakers had to cut transmission development when they ran into financial problems back in 2008, said Kevin Riddell, an engine and transmission analyst with LMC Automotive, a Detroit-area forecasting firm.

"The joint development is really going to help them out and get back onto an even playing field," he said.

This isn't unchartered territory for the two Detroit automakers. They began working on six-speed gearboxes in 2002. So far the companies have produced 8 million jointly-developed transmissions.

It's not unusual for automakers to work together on big ticket items such as engines or hybrid gas-electric powertrains, but working together on transmissions is less common, Petrovski said.

The companies don't expect any anti-trust issues to arise even though together they control one-third of the U.S. auto market. Lawyers reviewed the 2002 agreement and the federal government didn't raise any issues with it. A Justice Department spokeswoman wouldn't comment on the new deal.

I need to replace the rear main seal on my 19-HP Kubota diesel mower. The motor on this mower sits backwards, with the water pump, cooling fan, and radiator toward the rear, so what I am calling the rear main seal actually faces the front of the mower. The seal developed a bad leak, so I put in a new one, but I don't think I did it right. I am going to try again and would appreciate any thoughts on the proper way to do it.

Should I apply grease or engine assembly lube to the new seal?
Should I look into whether Kubota has a sleeve to compensate for wear on the crank where the seal is located?
Should I use a sealant around the outside of the new seal? If so, which type?

I am not sure why the seal failed. The crankcase vent is working properly.

As the proud owner of what may be the only Austin A30 Countryman Estate on my side of the pond...I thought I would start this thread to keep tabs on the orphan Austins that pop up for sale. If you see one for sale somewhere in N. America, please feel free to add a post to this thread with the link.

Here's a couple to get us started:

On Ebay now, a 1948 Austin A40 Devon, no reserve. Be nice to have some photos of the engine bay, wouldn't it? In N. Carolina.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1948-Austin-A40-Devon-/221209931505?_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&forcev4exp=true

Also on Ebay, a 1954 Austin A40 Somerset, partially restored, located in Rhode Island

I haven't been around MGE for a while. This car is the reason a 1966 Chrysler 300. It was my cousin father-in-law's car that has been sitting in his garage for 32 years. I traded the car for painting the exterior of his house. I have done so many thing to it but basically I got it running pretty easily. I restored the brakes completely, suspension and fuel system, so it is completely road worth.

I have now started on the cosmetics. I am painting the exterior along with all the body repair, mostly minor. The interior is going to be restored: new covering on the seats, panels and all the plastics re-dyed and a new top.

This is the complete opposite type of convertible than my MGB. A big huge boat that literally weighs twice as much as my B with a 335hp big block 383. It has been whole different experience from working on the MG. I can buy anything for the engine at Auto Zone, but no one is making and reproduction parts for the car so I have to find parts that I might need from junk yards. I have been so spoiled with the MG on this aspect.

It is a 73 2.0L with factory (dealer installed) air conditioning, special appearance group and every option except rear window defogger. It has been rebuilt from the ground up. It will definitely be a keeper.

This is a strange request but I figure that there are folks on the board who have built splash-lube engines (ie Model T and A, etc) and I haven't.
I am working on a 1913 Bebe Pugeot which was Bugatti's first production car. This car has been sitting (and not running) since at least 1964 and probably many years earlier. If anyone has visited the San Diego Aerospace Museum then they may have noticed it in there back in the 90's.
It is 100 years old this year and we want to get it running this year so I have the engine apart to inspect/rebuild.

This car looks just like the blue one in the top left picture and is a BP1:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_B%C3%A9b%C3%A9

My real question is- what kind of clearances should we use on the rod bearings, lifters (3/8" square steel lifters in brass guides), valves (common style valve stems in steel guides), etc.
I have built my share on pressure oil engines but never a splash one and am trying to do this one correctly.

Let me preface my comments with It's certainly not new,....but still has too many electrical gizmo's for my liking.

When I arrived at work this evening the DRL,......HEADLIGHTS wouldn't shut off. in fact the regular beams stay on,....even though the switch is off,...have tried everything to turn them off with no success. In one of my efforts I decided to start the vehicle and turn the high beams on,...then off,....now the high beams stay on continuously!

My fuse panel has no legend on it,.....so I have no way to turn the lights off to save the battery, except to disconnect the battery which I've done.

I thought disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it may have remedied the situation,....not!

I think removed every fuse in the glove box fuse panel without success.

I tried the internet for help with no success,....so I'm hoping someone can offer me a suggestion.

I haven't touched or worked on any wiring issues that could have caused this,.....just driving it,....and no hint of a problem until just a few hours ago.

Thanks

I currently drive a 2007 Chevy Avalanche. My automobile mission the next two years will include almost weekly 600 mi round trips with just me on board, no towing capacity or luggage capacity really needed. I am looking for something that gets better mileage and is fun to drive and has a manual transmission (more than 4 speeds). Cost is always a factor, so I need to keep it close to 20K. 3 or 4 year old would not bother me, New car smell is not a real enticement. I have ruled out anything new GM, partly because of the Government Motors thing, but mainly because they just do not have anything in their lineup below the Corvette that is appealing. The Fiat 500 Abarth is just a bit smaller than I want to drive, and more money than I really want to spend, there is just nothing in the Kia, Hunydai, or Toyota lineups that grabs me, so I am open to other suggestions. Vehicles I have driven in the past include a VW GTI, triumph GT6+, early Midgets, Jeeps, and a one ton pickup, so being a bit quirky is not out of the question, if there are any quirky cars left out there anymore. No crossovers, mini vans, or small SUV's, please, I do have some dignity left. Have I left anything out?

Any other suggestions? And I will not put DOT 5 brake fluid in any vehicle I get, because it will almost certainly have ABS.

Ram 1500 diesel to become very first oil-burning half-ton (no replies)

In the 3rd quarter of the season, a Ram 1500 diesel pickup will hit dealerships. Oddly enough, half-tons have never been offered with diesels regardless of being perfect for them with greater torque and better fuel economy than enormous gasoline guzzling V-8s. How many times have you needed more data concerning a used or new car or truck and turned to an internet search on “loans on car?” Your search is over, whatever you will want is at CarDealExpert.com! Need to know more about Car Deal Expert? Follow this. :)

Grand Cherokee diesel and Ram 1500 diesel shared

There are no U.S. half-ton pickups sold with a diesel motor in the U.S., which is unusual considering they sell a ton in the country. Diesels get better fuel mileage and produce more torque than gas motors, and both of these things are desired.

Torque is important because it is much easier to tow really heavy things.

A six-cylinder diesel will be put into a Ram 1500 to fix that issue though, according to USA Today. In fact, the motor will be the same as the one found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel that will be launched soon.

More engine information

The Grand Cherokee diesel engine, according to Car and Driver, named the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, is good for 240 horsepower but, according to USA Today, 420 foot-pounds of torque, enough to batter a brontosaur. Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is good for 120 more ponies, but 30 fewer foot-pounds, by comparison. Clearly, it's made to be a puller but, and some might view this as heresy, the engine is Italian.

To Get The Very Best Value On A new Or Pre-Owned Car, Van, Truck or SUV Please Visit Dodge Chrysler Jeep Springfield Now!

The motor is from VM Motori, which Chrysler-brand automobiles with diesel motors have been using since the 1990s, at least in models that don't have a Cummins. Motori, as fate would have it, is partially owned by Chrysler's parent, Fiat, according to Edmunds. The Ram 1500 diesel would get an eight-speed automatic; certainly a recipe for good fuel economy. It might not excel passing on the highway, but given the recipe, it could come near to 30 miles per gallon highway. The Cherokee diesel, according to MotorAuthority, is rated for 32 miles per gallon highway.

It is expected that the truck will do really well due to the good fuel mileage, according to MotorAuthority. In fact, a diesel Wrangler could be next in line if the Cherokee does really well in sales.

Paying a premium

It costs more to produce a diesel despite the truth that the Ram 1500 diesel could possibly be a ton better than a regular gas vehicle. There is a lot of potential, but that potential costs more cash to produce. It costs more to get the Grand Cherokee diesel by about $4,500 when compared to the fuel counterpart, according to Car and Driver. It also costs about $2,800 more to get the diesel Jetta.

Cummins is a really well-known business that produced good motors, so it is great to get it. It also means that an $8,000 premium is expected on the Ram’s diesel as a premium, according to USA Today. That is a ton of money to spend at a dealer like Miller Dodge Chrysler Jeep, but it could definitely be worth it if you save a ton of fuel.

I have to confess to someone who will help me justify what I just spent...

My 86 190D is my daily driver. I have 114K on her; bought from originla owner last summer. The lady bought her in Germany in 86 and drove her up 10 101K. It's a very nice car.

Two weeks ago I began to notice clunky downshifts. Then one day, I couldn't get the shift selector past N when trying to reverse. Had to be pushed out of a space! This happened a couple more times and then I took her to my mechanic.

Well, 2 grand later, and my tranny has been completely rebuilt...every component imaginable. He also replaced a module which had caused my tach to fail and diagnosed that my vacuum pump needs replacing. I put that on hold until I try to recover from the sting of the tranny rebuild. At this point, she's back and is shifting nicely. I know have a 5,500.00 27 year old car which I rely on every day.

I think the investment is reasonable and I hate new cars anyway. I will likely be sheeling out more for the vaccum pump, unless I figure out how to do it myself. anyone ever replace one of these?

Thanks,

Fiat and Mazda have signed a final agreement to jointly produce convertible two-seater Alfa Romeo and Mazda sports cars.

The Italian and Japanese carmakers said Friday that the roadsters will go into production at Mazda's plant in Hiroshima, Japan, in 2015.

The cars will be based on the same platform — the next generation of the iconic Mazda MX-5 — but will have different styling and engines. The carmakers signed a memorandum of understanding in May.

Fiat is planning to launch nine new Alfa Romeo's by 2016 as part of its strategy to focus on higher-margin luxury cars and launch Alfa into a global brand. Most will be produced in Italy to help return European operations to profitability and revive production at underutilized plants.

It has electronic ignition so no condenser and it just started happening after a rebuilt set of SU carbs went on.

Hey guys,
I have recently acquired a 1986 Honda Elite 80 from a good friend of mine. When I received it, it was not running. I got a new battery, spark plug, fresh gas, and some starter fluid and I was able to fire it up and get her running. After cruising around the neighborhood for maybe 20 minutes she died on me and I had to push her home.

I took apart the gas tank and tried to clean it out (I noticed lots of rust/corrosion because the scooter sat in my friend's garage for so long). I got a new fuel filter and I took apart the carb and cleaned it out as best as I could. I also replaced the electronic choke (I had read online that it was a highly faulty part and I went ahead and replaced it). Ever since I did all of this, I have not been able to get the scooter to maintain an idle or stay alive for more than just a few seconds.

I have messed with the idle adjustment screws as well.

I have tried cleaning the carb several times now (taking it all apart and putting it back together) and it hasn't been significantly dirty. I still haven't been able to get the scooter running properly.

BOTTOM LINE IS: I have a fresh battery in the scooter and I can only get the scooter to fire up with starter fluid and then the engine appears to rev very high for just 2-3 seconds and then it dies and shuts off. I barely have any throttle response (if any at all)

I am unsure what else I should try, any suggestions or ideas??
I just wanna ride B-)

Thanks,
GM Rolls Out New Electric Mini-Car
DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors is giving its Chevrolet Spark a jolt of electricity.

An all-electric version of the mini-car will debut this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It goes on sale this summer in California, Oregon, Canada and South Korea, where it's made. Other markets will follow.

Unlike the Chevrolet Volt sedan, which can run in all-electric mode but also has a backup gas engine, the Spark EV is a pure electric. GM won't say how far the car will go on a charge, but says it will be a top performer among the small number of EVs available. The current leader, the electric Ford Focus sedan, can go 76 miles on a charge.

The Spark EV will also be cheaper than most of its electric rivals, GM says. Exact pricing hasn't been revealed, but the car will start for less than $25,000 in the U.S. when a $7,500 federal tax credit is factored in. The electric Nissan Leaf starts at $27,700 with the tax credit. Like all electrics, though, the Spark is much pricier than its gasoline-powered equivalent. The gas-operated Spark starts at $12,245.

Here are more details about the Spark — on everything from styling to power:

UNDER THE HOOD: The Spark EV is powered by an electric motor and a 20 kWh lithium ion battery. It gets 130 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 mph in less than 8 seconds, which is several seconds faster than the gas-powered Spark. GM says the Spark EV is the first all-electric vehicle in North America to offer SAE Combo DC Fast Charge capability, which can charge the battery to 80 percent of capacity in about 20 minutes. It can also be fully recharged in seven hours using a standard 240-volt outlet, or longer using a 120-volt outlet.

INSIDE: Though it's a mini-car, it has lots of big-car touches, like leather seats and GM's OnStar safety system. The Spark EV will have a smartphone-based infotainment system that gives drivers access to navigation and music apps like Pandora. Drivers with a compatible iPhone can link up their phones and perform tasks — like sending email or texts — by talking to Apple's Siri. The car also has 10 air bags and electronic stability control, which helps keep it steady despite its small frame.

OUTSIDE: The five-door hatchback is tiny, at 144.7 inches long. That's about five inches longer than a Fiat 500. It comes in lime green and other unusual hues.

CHEERS: GM customers will now have an all-electric option that costs less than its chief rivals. The EV could also increase buyers' interest in the gasoline version of the Spark, which went on sale in the summer.

JEERS: Demand for electric cars has been anemic so far. GM and other automakers have fallen significantly short of EV sales targets, especially as gas prices have fallen. Electrics remain expensive, and drivers are concerned about getting stranded too far from a charging station. While the Spark is great for city drivers who need to fit into tight parking spaces, those drivers may not have garages or other spots to charge up their cars at night.

The swivel on my car dolly no longer swivels. It's the part that the towed cars attaches to. It's a Classic Mfg. car dolly, which is no longer manufactured and the original company is no longer in business.

I want to get to the swivel's bearing, hoping that it only needs greasing but there is a cap that I would like suggestions how to take off. It appears that it needs 4 pin tool to remove. Maybe a pipe wrench would work but why does the centre part stick up so? I don't want to bend the cap trying to remove it and damage something underneath.

I guess I'm just looking for suggestions/input as to how to get the cap off. Any chance someone else has one of these tow dollys and has a manual of some sort for it?

We have one 4 wheel drive vehicle...a newer Durango..so didn't need 4wd in a ruck..Wanted a Chevy or GMC, extended cab long bed loaded. Whenever I posted on sites offering my 02 Camaro vert for sale or possible trades for above mentioned truck..and stated NO other type trucks..NO 4wd etc..I was swamped with offers for Rangers with 4 cyls, monster Dodges and Fords and old crap..I stated 99-04 only. I finally gave up.Finally got lucky and a buddy of mine in the business bid on a 2000 Silverado hit in the rt side extended door and bed side. Bought it and he delivered it to me from about a 100 miles. Runs and drives perfectly, clean title..and have all the parts located. Fix, paint..and ready to go. Still have the 02 Camaro vert 4 sale so will store it till spring and sell it. it also passed the wife test, so all is well.

So I was on Craigslist and stumbled upon this Triumph, which I know nothing about. I'm interested in buying it as a winter project and something to do when I'm not doing anything with the gt (which seems like never, but...) So do any of you guys know anything about it, I've looked at pictures and couldn't find any like. Another thing is that there is no title, so (in Missouri) how hard would it be to get one? He's asking $500, does this seem fair for this condition (doesn't run but has compression, I'm more interested in getting it running than getting it pretty) Any information would be more than I know already, thanks guys!
