Rideskinz (Tony Jennes) custom valance

Hey Guys and Gals,
I'm back again with the custom front valance setup for the B, here's the link from the previous (and lengthy) thread:
http://www.mgexperience.net/phorum/read.php?1,1606845,1606845#msg-1606845
Trying to generate some interest in a POLYURETHANE valance and splitter. So no more cracking when/if you hit a curb and no crazy fitment issues that you would have with fiberglass. I'm also in the process of making a rear valance like the Sebring style, but also in polyurethane. Let me know what you guys think, this is your chance to throw in your .02 cents! Make it count!

Thanks,
Tony Jennes

	Tony,
I have read with great interest the info regarding your front valence and have the following questions.
I have a 1978 rubber bumper MGB and I want to do a smooth valence look eliminating the rubber bumper. This will be a street car.
Will your front valence fit my car? What mods if any wil I have to do to the car to make your valence fit?
What is the price? D you have one that is smooth all the way across the front with just two small round holes for lights?
Thanks.

Jerry Matlin

Hey Jerry,
Thanks for your interest in the valance. To answer your questions, the valance will fit your '78. If you take a look at post #153, you will see that David (Rallynav) fitted one to his '80 B. You will have to relocate your turn signal lights to the front of the fenders under the headlights like the earlier B's have. No other modifications are necessary to fit the valance. The current price is $299 plus shipping. I don't have any that are smooth across the front, but I can see if we can make one with the center opening uncut so it still has the back surface. You or your bodyshop will have to fill the center to make the front smooth. Not sure how you can do that with urethane.
Hi Tony. What adhesive will stick? I need to mount some attaching mounts for driving lights. anything we can use to make mounts glued to the valance?

There are a number of flexible adhesives out there that you can use on polyurethane. I used a 3m brand flexible adhesive, since I used it a while ago I'm not sure on the product number off hand. Here's a link to some of their adhesives:
http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/3M_Automotive/OEMs/Product_Center/Product_Catalog/?PC_7_RJH9U5230GNH60IQ4GSSPD0422000000_nid=45R1LF5S87be4VCX679CQ4gl

Loctite also makes the 3951 gap filling, flexible Urethane Adhesive: http://www.matweb.com/search/datasheettext.aspx?matguid=b2b0efa1d0954df9878ff6090ff149de

Be sure to check with your local automotive paint store or auto body shop and they will direct you to the best adhesive to use with polyurethane.

	Tony,

Attached is a pic of the first fitment, it was suprisingly easy and I am quite happy with it, the flush fit is really good.

Now for the big question, when are you going to do the rear one?

Hey David,
Good to hear you like the fit. I definitely plan on doing a rear valance in the near future, just have a lot of things on my plate right now. Working on fiberglass race valances for Hap and a few other guys as well as a full body kit for the new Camaro. I'll definitely keep you guys updated on when the rear valance will go into production.

Thanks!
Tony,

I have a hole in my valence where there shouldn't be one, is this normal?

Unfortunately I think that was from the injection mold. The manufacturer already pumped out all of the valances before I could check that they all had the same indent. No worries though, there are flexible body fillers available that are made especially for polyurethane and other flexible plastic parts. Most body/paint shops and paint supply stores sell the filler, I think 3M makes the stuff. When you get yours painted, the paint shop will take care of all that stuff anyway, just so you don't have to spend extra money on the filler.

Here is how I mounted my valance, you guys may come up with your own technique and share if you like.

1. Jack up the car so you can gain access to the back side of the front mounting flanges (support with jack stands of course).

2. Clamp the center of the valance to the car using adjustable clamps. An extra hand holding the valance in place while clamping might help here.

3. Push the outer corners of the valance to meet with the wheel well opening/fender, and also clamp in place. You can then attach more clamps to secure into place and get the valance in the correct location. Make sure all gaps between the body and the valance are even.

4. Grab a bright colored pencil (yellow, white), center punch, silver marker or other marking device. While laying on the ground looking at the backside of the valance, locate all of the stock mounting holes and mark them through the holes onto the backside of the valance using your pencil, marker, etc.

5. Remove all clamps and valance.

6. Pre drill holes where the marks are located on the back side of the valance using a narrow bit (smaller than the screw you will attach later).
****IMPORTANT* make sure not to drill through the valance to the front side.

Note- for the two tabs located on either side of the center of the valance you can drill to whatever size bolt is needed in that location. For the outer corners of the valance you will need a shorter screw size so you don't drill it all the way through to the front. You will have to measure the width of the outer corners of the valance in order to get a good idea on what size screws you will need. For the other pre drilled holes, you may use longer screws. Since you have already pre drilled the holes, you can use regular sheet metal screws, self tappers, or whatever you think will work best to secure it properly.

Also, another option which works really good instead of using screws to fasten the valance to the front, you can also use bolt studs shown here:
bolt stud

or a hanger bolt, shown here:

hanger bolt

Once you get the bolt stud or hanger bolt in position, it is recommended that you also use epoxy adhesive to keep them in place so they don't pull out of the polyurethane.

7. After pre drilling all holes, re mount the valance as you did before using clamps.

8. Attach the center screws first, then work outward. For the two tabs just outside the center of the valance, run the bolts through the mounting holes and fasten on the other side with lock washers and nuts.

9. Congratulations your new valance is mounted! Now take it back off and send it to the paint shop to get painted...haha :)-D.

***In combination with the mounting screws, you may also use 3M super strength double stick tape or an adhesive silicone on the back side, for more support.
***Also, if for any reason you do not feel comfortable mounting the valance or if you don't have the expertise, please take it to a professional body/paint shop to do the work. I would rather have a professional install the valances who have done this sort of thing before. :)

Hey Steve, glad to see you got yours so quick! To answer your questions, you can install it a number of ways. For mine, I used self tapping screws on the ends (make sure they are the right size and they don't drill through) and used nuts and bolts on for the tabs located just outside the center of the valance. You can use the stock mounting holes to run screws through or you can drill through the mounting flange and attach there, its up to you. You can also use regular screws I guess if you don't have self tappers, and also run some double stick tape or a bead of silicone adhesive across the back side for more support. Also, a reminder, these were shipped out in a smaller box to save on charges. Because of this, I had to bend them in half. Don't worry! The amazing thing about polyurethane is that it goes back to its original shape after 20 minutes in the sun. Or if you don't have any sun where you're at, it will usually take shape after a few hours. Let me know if you guys have any further questions regarding mounting, adding fog lights, painting, etc. You can also email me at tony@rideskinz.com

	Tony,
Could you please confirm that the openings could be closed? I'm buying this to improve aerodynamics under the car..

Hey Vijay,
Are you looking to close up all holes or just the center? I've had this valance on my car for over a year now and have not noticed any drastic changes in handling or aerodynamics while driving on the freeway. People have suggested adding some sort of an air dam behind the center openings that directs the flow up into the oil cooler or radiator. Or even adding a tight cell mesh which doesn't allow as much air to flow through.

Tony, will these 16 be the only ones available, or will future production runs be possible only with the group buy option? I am very interested, but have several other things on my need to buy list that are currently higher priority. When I'm ready, I'll probably go for both the front and rear valances.

There will definitely be more available in the future, but not at the group buy price of $275. After this they will be for sale on Ebay and on our website once I get the shopping cart up and running. I will also offer full kits which include front and rear valances with optional fender flares or rear spoiler at a discounted rate.

Thanks!
Hay Tony, Where do we stand?

Hey Steve (and everyone else),
I'm in the process of making the special injection mold for the polyurethane parts. It takes a bit of time and should be done soon. After these pieces go into production, they should be delivered within that same week. We can usually get about 10 pieces done per day. If everyone on the list could do me a favor and email me their mailing address, phone number and email address for FedEx shipping, I will send you all of the paypal information so we can get the ball rolling. My email address is tony@rideskinz.com

Thanks!
will these work on rubber bumper cars? if so, i would love to see photos of one installed. i am thinking that the "splitter" version would be perfect for adding some down force while not going all out for a front spoiler.
i wish that were the case, but there are a number of other things that need to be sorted out on the car before i can start prettying it up :(

would love to see it on an RB car though, when someone else does it.

Hey Randy,
Thanks and I'll add you to the list! Here are the advantages of this valance vs. the Sebring version:

1. Rideskinz valance mounts from behind, using existing mounting holes. Sebring mounts from the front so the screws are visible.
2. Rideskinz valance sits flush to the front of the car, eliminating excess drag. Sebring sits recessed from front of car, more drag.
3. Rideskinz valance will be made of durable and flexible polyurethane, so no more stress cracks or having to worry about hitting curbs or speed bumps. Sebring is made of chopped strand fiberglass which is more prone to cracking. Also, since most of the Sebring valances are manufactured using the chopper gun method, they are not nearly as durable as they should be.
4. Rideskinz valance has optional openings for fog lights which can also be used as brake ducts. These brake ducts are fully functional and are pointed in the right direction. Sebring only has provisions for brake ducts and are not pointed in the right direction in order to be fully functional.
5. Rideskinz valance fits! Sebring valance has many fitment issues due to the lack of quality.
6. All mounting hardware is included with the Rideskinz valance, optional fog lights and grille mesh (as seen in photos) can also be purchased. No hardware, optional fog lights or grille mesh are offered with the Sebring version.

Put in a frenched licence plate. Looks much cleaner. Just my opinion.

What do you mean by a frenched license plate? Does that refer to a recessed area for the plate to fit into?

Yes. A recess that is angled so the plate sits vertical and is below the surface. Also make the inclosure big enough to fit a licence frame that has a built in light. Street Rod suppliers have these. Makes a very clean look.

Would the removable lip spoiler/splitter attach to and fit the stock valance???

Hey Blake, since I don't have the stock valance anymore I can't really give you a good answer on that. However, the finished splitter will be polyurethane so it will be able to flex and conform to different shapes. I'll look into it more and see if I can track down a stock valance to test fit the splitter

The rear valance that I'm going to tackle will be different than both the english and Dave's versions. Similar to both but with a twist :D

Hi from Miami Tony! Maybe I missed something in the 6 pages of posts here; I love what you're creating but was wondering - is it possible to attach the stock ('72 in my case) chrome bumper to the valence? If so I'm interested :)
Thanks!

Hey Marco! you can definitely attach the stock chrome bumper to this valance. All you would have to do is cut out the two openings for the bumper mounting brackets and you're ready to go. Can I put you on the list?

When will shipping occur for the valences? Also, is there a special type of paint to use for these?
If we can get enough people on board for the group buy (15+), I'm thinking these valances will ship out mid to late January. You can use any automotive paint but you need to include a flex additive to prevent cracking.

Hi Tony, is the splitter removable? that is, can it be installed or left off before paint? put me down as a strong maybe. want to buy one but being off work with a tendon transplant for the last 16 months has drained the budget for the mg for awhile. should be back to work by mid december though. great product you have crafted there.

Hey Michael thanks for your interest. The splitter is removable and also height adjustable. I probably won't get around to producing these till January since we're in the holiday season and family will be in town. I will put you on the list as a strong maybe. Thanks!
