2nd Annual MA / RI Coastal MG Tour - May 4, 2013 - UPDATES! (2 replies)

The 2nd Annual Coastal MG Tour along the back roads of the Massachusetts SouthCoast and Rhode Island East Bay region will be on Saturday, May 4, 2013!(:D

On our inaugural run last year, we had a couple of dozen MG enthusiasts at the start, and 17 MG's that made the run to Sakonnet Point. See the pic below! And this year we should have even more MG's participating!B-)

We will meet up right off I-195 at Exit 12 (see directions below) on Comfort Lane in Dartmouth, MA. There are a couple of parking lots right behind the Mobil station and the McDonalds Restaurant on Faunce Corner Road where the Saturn dealership was located (soon to be a Kia dealership). Just look for all the MG's!:D

Let's try to meet by 10:00 am, you can have a bite at the McDonalds, or the nearby Dunkin Donuts, then we'll have a laid-back driver/navigator meeting at 11:00 am and leave around 11:30 pm. The route we'll follow is a little less than 100 miles, passing by, or stopping at, Running Brook Vineyards, the Horseneck Beach sand dunes, Westport Point, Gray's Ice Cream, Sakonnet Vineyards, Sakonnet Point, Westport Rivers Vineyards, Padanaram Harbor, and then returning to our starting location at around 4:30 pm. Perhaps we can then have a meal and share tales at the 99 Restaurant.:)-D

If you cannot join us for the entire run, you can meet us for any portion of the run that fits your schedule. . . or just show up at the start to kibitz.:)

There is NO CHARGE to join us for the group drive. After all, we're not a "club" per se, nor is this a get together that is sanctioned by any organization. We're just a group of friends out for a drive. (By joining with us, you assume responsibility for your own actions.)

Should the forecast call for inclement weather on Saturday, the rain date will be the following day, Sunday, May 5, 2013 (however Westport Rivers Vineyard is closed on Sundays). Check the Member Meetup Forum page on www.MGExp.com for updates if the weather looks questionable for updates. If the whole weekend is a wash out, we'll try again later in the season.

Cheers,

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons Epic drive and meet 2013

First item: I have gotten some flak from people on the different forms for putting this on as well as asking people to only post if they were going or at least seriously interested. I am not being paid to do this nor am I asking for money. I am doing this because I love to drive and seem to be one of the few people out in the community willing to take on such a headache. All I ask is if you are going to post on this thread, please be serious about attending. Just posting to say "say not for me" or "to far" makes the thread long and does not add value. Thank you.

Second item: There is no way I can please everyone for this event and nor am I trying to do so. I have done my best to make an event that balances the areas I felt were important.

Being able to see the sights you have not seen as well as take your ride on a drive you normally would never do.

Being able to drive the car in a fun manner at some points to “stretch its legs”.

Make a successful event that we can have move across North America to see the sights.

Dates of the event

June 24-28 – for meet and group activities. If you include driving to base camp it would be June 22nd – June 30th possibly depending on location you are starting from.

Base camp will be West Yellowstone. There is plenty of lodging, parking and activities for a hopefully big group. I will be working on group rates at the first of the year for everyone.

June 24th, 2013 - Yellowstone park North loop

June 25th, 2013 – Yellowstone park South Loop

June 26th, 2013 – Beartooth Pass drive. (This will be the drive day and will make for some great roads. This will be a LONG day, as we will cover some miles)

June 27th, 2013 – Leave West Yellowstone and travel to Jackson WY
- Explore Grand Tetons during the day on the way to Jackson WY

June 28th, 2013 – Explore Grand Tetons

In an effort to help facilitate getting people in touch with each other to arrange caravans, I have made a form that I will use to populate a Google document. I am the only one who will see this as a FYI.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHZTaDBYVnFONUxrTlZheW9RcFlhQUE6MQ

What will we be doing there?

We are in the oldest national park in the world so we will be seeing the sights and doing some walking around. In addition, a few others and I are trying to arrange some group photo shots at the parks attractions. I have included one day for just pure driving for those who are interested.

What will this cost me to go?

You will be responsible for fuel, lodging, food, park fees and anything else you might want to do. The only fee that is 100% for sure is the $25 for a 7 day pass which allows you to see both Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.

If I get enough people interested, I could have some removable decals made to be placed on the side of the car to be like we are on a rally event. If you want me to look into these costs, let me know on the form above.

This sounds LAME!

I know some of you have posted you hated Yellowstone and would just do the Grand Teton or you just want to hall ass around all day seeing what your car can do. Sorry this is not the place to do that. The best explanation I can say why this is not lame is because you are going on a ROAD TRIP, which to me has always been a reason to go to places. This also is a continental wide event that hopefully will be the first of many more to come. Therefore, if you still think this is a lame idea then I wish you a safe summer in your adventures.

Currently I have four cars from Sacramento area 100% going. In addition, I know of a few in Montana that will be attending. This means we have about eight cars ranging from BMW, Audi, Ferrari and Lotus already attending.

If you wish to email me directly my email is norcal.drivers@gmail.com. Please make sure to let me know you are asking about Yellowstone as I organize many drives for the NorCal enthusiasts.

Cheers

Hi Girls and Boys.

Been thinking about the spring drive and would like to tour the Shawangunk Mountain area in Ulster County. We would need to meet in Newburgh (exit 17 NYS Thruway) which is a bit further up than usual so plan for an early start.
This tour will take us through Gardnier, Kerhonkson, Ellenville and a few other towns.
If you've been to the "Under The Gunks" car show, you've been in the area.

The only date that will work for me is Sunday, June 2nd. Too much going on in May for me.

Let me know if you can make this date. Also, if anyone knows of a car show that conflicts with this date, let me know.

When I get more info I'll post it in this thread.

See you soon......Bruno

NOTE: This drive is open to everyone. We're always looking for new people to join in.

Euro Car North America gathering at Yellowstone, EPIC road trip 2013 (7 replies)

Cheers

Every year the British Motoring Club of Arkansas hosts a rather nice swap meet here on our grounds. McLeod's is happy to provide a place for the BMCA to put on this great event.

There are usually local vendors present as well as individual collectors with years worth of parts for sale. If any vendors would like to attend and set a booth up please let us know. If you are looking to buy a car this would be a great place to come and look. Last year we had cars ranging from good driving projects (ex. Series 5 Alpine) to fully restored cars (ex 1959 Tr3). This year we will be bringing a number of builder cars for sale.

Check this flyer for basic info and let us know if you have any questions.

Didn't know where to post this so I thought I'd start here. I remember, way back now, when there was a shop on Kemper Street. I think it was in a Quonset hut style building and was run by Calvin Lam(b).. I think he worked on imports mostly but cannot really remember. Had to be after 1968 and before 1975. I'm just curious as I've not thought about the shop in over 30 years. Anybody?

In the dead of winter, when most of us are itching to get our MGs out of hibernation but staring out the window at salt-caked roads it's time once again for a night of food, drink and MGs.

Reservations are being taken for the 5th Manhattan get together of NY Metro area MG Experience members.

We'll do it at O'Reilly's Pub on W.35th Street again. It's only a block and a half from Penn Station and for those who prefer driving in there's a parking garage right next door.

http://www.oreillysbar.com/oreillynew/home.php

Dates being considered are: Saturday, February 9, Saturday, February 16 or Saturday, February 23.

Everyone is welcome whether you're from the NY Metro area or not. Let me know which date you'd prefer and we'll do it whichever is best for the most people.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

This event will benefit the “Independence House Program” on Cape Cod which serves area at risk women and their families.(tu)

The ride starts from the Cedarville British Beer Company’s parking lot located at 2294 State Road (Rt. 3A) in southern Plymouth, MA. First car off at 10:00 am with a participant meeting before, so get there 9:00-9:30ish.

It will cover some great driving roads along the south shore (Plymouth County) and end at a restaurant/pub in the Marshfield area. There we have a private room where participants can enjoy a meal and socialize. There will also be a silent auction for which they welcome any additional donated items.

The entry fee for the cruise is a gift card that might be helpful to a family with children at the holidays. Stop & Shop or Target would be a couple of suggestions. The gift cards will be delivered to the charity in time for the Holiday Season.

Last year, between 30-40 cars, including at least 8 MGB's, attended and we even earn coverage by Hemmings Motor News:
(You'll notice my Grampian Grey GT in the first photo crossing the Sagamore Bridge and again in photo #4.)

I noticed that a few people from the MGE are attending the Cape Cod British Car Club's British Legends Weekend on Cape Cod, MA on October 5 - 7, 2012. Last I looked, Barry (hump2), Joe (jsabatino), James (jatbw4), Perry (parsprite), and myself, Rick (oldredsel) have all preregistered. Anyone else?

I'll don't think I can make the Friday night Meet & Greet, but hope to be there in the morning for the Saturday's Cape Cod Seaside & Back Roads Tour. And I'll drive down again on Sunday for the Car Show at the Railroad Bridge Park in Buzzards Bay, Bourne, MA.

Both Friday's meet & greet, and Saturday's driving tour are FREE. Sunday's show is $20 to enter ($25 on the day of the show) and no charge for spectators. It's a nice show with well over 100 cars on the field in 25 classes, the usual 50/50 raffle, prize raffles, rocker box races, and usually a few British parts vendors.

If anyone else wants coming from the west wants to meet up (breakfast?) to drive down on Saturday and/or Sunday morning post here, or drop me a pm/email! We can take the highway or if we have time, I can show you some pretty nice back roads!

Cheers,

Hi All

As usual, we are heading up for the British Invasion in Stowe, VT. next Wednesday.
At this point five of us are scheduled to leave Fitchburg, MA at 9:30am on 12 north.
We will stop in Winchendon to pick up a sixth car.
I'm sending this note just so if there are any others that want to join the frey.
Your more than welcome.......strength in numbers.
We alter the exact route, this weekend. We're always trying new roads!
But as it stands right now.

12 north out of Fitchburg
Stop at Winchendon MacDonald's to meet up with Mo
Continue on 12 north into NH until 12A, just outside of Claremont, NH
Cross over the river into VT and take 12 to Barnard.
The take 107 over to 100 north.
Take 100 the rest of the way into Stowe.

One of these days I'll take 100 from the Mass border, all the way up.

Cheers!
We're planning to meet up at the cruise night at the Matt's Blackboard Restaurant cruise night, Plumb Corner in Rochester, MA on Monday evening, September 10, 2012.

Unfortunately Steve won't be in an MG, but it'd be cool to invade the American Iron there with a great showing of British Steel! And there are some nice MG roads to get there!

Since Steve has other commitments later in the evening, so we're going to try to meet there around 5:00pm. That could also give us time to maybe do a RT 105 run a little later!

Coming from the west, PM/email me. Perhaps we can meet up and then take the back roads to Rochester!

Cheers,

Cape Cod British Car Club's July monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, July 17, is going to be an ice cream run!

They're meeting just over the Bourne Bridge on the Cape side at the Trowbridge Tavern parking lot, just off the rotary at 6:30pm. Then taking a short group drive to an ice cream shop in Cataumet (a village in Bourne, near the Falmouth town line). The forecast looks nice, and I'm considering driving down to participate. I'd be leaving around 5:30pm for a back roads drive to Bourne. . . Anyone interested in joining up?

Details here: CCBCC July Ice Cream Run/Meeting

OK, we've a handful of people interested in doing a Sunday afternoon Sakonnet Point/Gray's Ice Cream run. We'll do a 30 mile or so back roads run to get there, but the route is flexible and/or we can extend it to include another stop or two if desired.(tu)

So the plan is to meet up at 2:30 pm at the old Saturn dealership right off I-195 (Exit 12 or 12A) on Comfort Lane in Dartmouth, MA. It's the parking lot right behind the Mobil station and the McDonalds Restaurant on Faunce Corner Road. (Where we started and finished the May 5th Coastal MG Tour.)

Who else is in? The weather looks great!B-)

Yesterday I tagged along with the NJ/PA Acura NSX club on their annual River Run outing (we have friends in the club). About 40 NSXs showed up. I brought my MGA. It was great fun but I would have stood a better chance of keeping up in my Miata (not much better). I could do ok on the twisty turns but when the roads ran up a steep hill it was all over. I was in front of the "caboose" (a club member with a long range business walkie talkie keeping the pack together) and we would fall far behind the group as the MGA futilely tried to accelerate up a steep hill at 15 or 20 MPH. 80 HP vs. 265. Still we had a great time on this wonderful route the club members had mapped out. Until the end that is. We were in 3 groups of about 13 cars, and our group made a wrong turn, going left when we should have gone right. As we cruised down this road, we past a county truck painting the white and yellow lines on the road. It was going about 5 MPH. About 1/2 a mile behind it was another county truck with a big sign that said "wet paint - do not pass - do not cross lines". And behind him were about 20 cars doing 5 MPH. I thought to myself "glad I'm not in that pack". Well guess what, a few minutes later our leader turns around and heads back the other way and we have drive about 2 miles behind this truck at 5 MPH. It was about 20 minutes of too fast for idling in first gear, too slow for idling in 2nd gear, and in bright hot sunshine for most of it. This was pretty much the only traffic we encountered in the whole route. It was still a great run just with a hot finish.

The route started in the parking lot of a park off Lodi Hill Road on the Delaware canal and ended at a restaurant on Route 32 (River Road). For those local to the area interested in the route, I have attached a PDF with the driving directions handed out (it was the R-S segment where we got stuck behind the line painting truck). They are a bit tricky and our group leader did make a couple of wrong turns, so I have also remapped the route in Google and taken a screen shot of that. Here is a link to that screen shot (to preserve the fidelity):

We had such a great time meeting everyone on the MA / RI Coastal MG Tour, let's get together again!:)-D

To steal from Monty Python, "And now for something completely diffferent.":)

Father's Day, June 17, 2012 is the annual antique auto show on the grounds of the Portsmouth Abbey School right on Narragansett Bay in Portsmouth, RI. While I realize there are a plethora of Father's Day car shows, including the 2nd annual Bershire British Motorcar Festival in Lenox, MA, Father's Day at Portsmouth Abbey is one of the oldest car shows in the region (this year being the 56th annual event). And it always draws such a large contigent of British automobiles that they have a British only class(tu) (in addition to the Bentley/Rolls Royce class and the generic non-British, Foreign class).

If you're coming from the east, we'll meet up, drive the back roads, stop at Coastal Roasters in Tiverton, then cross the Sakonnett River Bridge (more details to follow as the time nears). Perhaps those coming through Bristol and over Mt Hope Bridge, as well as those coming over the Newport / Jamestown Bridges and through Newport can arrange meet ups too!B-)

I know that Dave (RIRaven) is in, how about everyone else!

Also, if anyone is interested, the St. Columba's Cricket Club is holding a match (35 overs) nearby in Middletown against the URI Cricket Club that day. We can stop by after the show if anyone wants to continue their British experience. If you're not familiar with cricket, I guarantee you won’t understand it!:S But wicket-keeper, Chuck Zalewski (the only U.S. born player on the team), should be there to enthusiasticly explain it to anyone with the interest (and patience) to learn.

Cheers,

Hi Guys & Gals,

Just sitting here watching F1 qualifying at Monaco and though I'd post about a fall drive. I know we just finished our spring drive but it's never too early to plan ahead.
I was thinking of doing an overnighter to the Saratoga Auto Museum taking route 9W most of the way in order to stay off the Thruway.
I found a motel, (Top Hill Motel) with 59-89 dollar rates and the dates I considered were either September 22nd-23rd (don't know for sure about this date...might have a wedding to go to) or October 13th-14th. There are no lawn events at the museum those dates.
If we get enough interest I'll plan it. If not, I'll set up a day drive.

Also, I you have another idea for an overnighter, post it.
See ya.............Bruno

Designed to provide great MG driving roads, wonderful sightseeing and vacation opportunities plus plenty of MG fellowship while driving a route that circumnavigates the great state of North Carolina, the MG2012 NC Border Tour will begin outside the state’s capital of Raleigh in the Town of Rolesville. The rallye will officially begin on Monday, June 4th and travel to the Mt Airy area with an overnight stop right off of Interstate 77 in Dodson, the home of North Carolina’s largest winery – Shelton Vineyards. Tuesday the group will travel almost totally on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and spend the evening in historic Asheville. Wednesday the rallye will continue on the Parkway to its terminus in Cherokee and then head on to Murphy, the state’s westernmost city before turning back to the east to Dillard, Georgia, and MG2012.

When MG2012 wraps up on Sunday morning, the tour will begin again, this time heading to the very scenic Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area (think “Dirty Dancing”) for a wonderful sightseeing evening. Monday the group heads past the home of NASCAR outside Charlotte and on to United State’s golf capital, Pinehurst, with dinner among the Long Leafed Pines. Tuesday will dawn with the group heading to Wilmington and the Battleship USS North Carolina before driving up the Neuse Sound to an overnight stop in historic New Bern. Wednesday we’ll head through historic Washington and Bath (Black Beard) on our way to Manteo and the Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills (Wright Brothers) area on the Outer Banks. Some will stay on to take in the sites of the Outer Banks and some will begin their drive home while the diehards will continue on from the Atlantic to end the loop of North Carolina where we began in Raleigh/Rolesville.

In all, the Tour will cover almost 1600 miles over eleven days with three of the days spent at MG2012. A modest registration fee is planned that will get you a Rallye plate for your MG, hospitality parties each night on the route and wonderful MG memories. This event is open to all MG enthusiasts and all MG models. So if you wished you made the Rallye To Reno, make your plans today to join us on the MG2012 NC Border Tour.

Just recently posted a poll and some pics on the MGB & GT forum page about our upcoming MA/RI Coastal Wineries Tour on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Please visit and give your thoughts on our question of the week!
POLL - MA/RI Spring Coastal MG Tour - May 5, 2012

Final details are yet to be worked out, but the planned start and finish are just off RT I-195 in Darmouth, MA. It should be a great drive of about 90 miles with fairly evenly spaced rest stops at 3 of our areas award winning wineries, Westport Rivers Vineyard and Winery, Sakonnet Vineyards, and Running Brook Vineyard and Winery. Please, no taste testing by drivers! But even if you don't partake, they provide great photo ops (and clean restrooms). Plus we've also included the required stop at Gray's Ice Cream at Tiverton Four Corners!

Cheers,

UPDATE! Most of the usual suspects ended up working on Saturday (although I did get in an 82 mile run!(tu)) Weather looks good tomorrow, too and we have a few "maybes" for a Sunday run. Post or PM if interested. If it develops, I'll post the meeting time/place, so check back here for a new post at the bottom of the thread.

OK, we may have a window of opportunity here in the MA Southcoast / RI East Bay area. According to the latest forecast, it's suppose to rain Thursday night into late Friday morning. Friday afternoon is suppose to be 50 degrees and mostly cloudy, potentially drying the now rain washed roads.

That means on Saturday we could have salt-free roads, and the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 40's!(tu) Looks to be perfect for a January MG run!B-)

Anyone else interested? Post or PM me!

If the weather does cooperate, I'll be out driving! If it doesn't, I'll be replacing my gearbox mounts!

Cheers,

In the dead of winter, when most of us are itching to get our MGs out of hibernation but staring out the window at salt-caked roads it's time once again for a night of food, drink and MGs.

Reservations are being taken for the 4th Manhattan get together of NY Metro area MG Experience members.

We'll do it at O'Reilly's Pub on W.35th Street again. It's only a block and a half from Penn Station and for those who prefer driving in there's a parking garage right next door.

http://www.oreillysbar.com/oreillynew/home.php

Dates being considered are: Saturday, February 11, Saturday, February 18 or Saturday, February 25.

Everyone is welcome whether you're from the NY Metro area or not. Let me know which date you'd prefer and we'll do it whichever is best for the most people.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

The Murphy to Manteo Rallye is in the planning stages now. It includes two days on the BRP from the Va/NC border south to Dillard. And we hope to include a lunch stop in Twigs area of Blowing Rock, NC. Also an overnight near Ashville, NC (Biltmore House). After mg 2012 the Rallye will continue for another 4-5 days with overnights near Chimney Rock, Pinehurst, New Bern, & Manteo on the outer banks. Look for more details in Classic MG Magazine and here. And yes "cool rallye plates" are planned!
Dick Lunney's announcement follows:

Murphy To Manteo Rallye – The North Carolina Border Tour
Next year’s NAMGBR MG2012 event in Dillard, Georgia, will have a complimentary tour that will “Bookend” the June 6-10 MGB focused event. Designed to provide great MG driving roads, wonderful sightseeing and vacation opportunities plus plenty of MG fellowship while driving a route that circumnavigates the great state of North Carolina, the Murphy To Manteo Rallye will begin outside the state’s capital of Raleigh.
When MG2012 wraps up on Sunday morning the tour will begin again, this time heading to the very scenic Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area (think “Dirty Dancing”) for a wonderful sightseeing evening. Wednesday we’ll head through historic Washington and Bath (Black Beard) on our way to Manteo and the Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills area on the Outer Banks. Some will stay on to take in the sites of the Outer Banks and some will begin their drive home while the diehards will continue on from the Atlantic to end the loop of North Carolina where we began in Raleigh.
In all, the Rallye well cover almost 1100 miles over ten days with three spent at MG2012. A modest registration fee is planned that will get you a Rallye plate for your MG, hospitality parties each night on the route and wonderful MG memories. This event is open to all MG enthusiasts and all MG models. So if you wished you made the Rallye To Reno, make your plans today to join us on the 2012 Murphy To Manteo Rallye.
Feedback for Touring Joara please... (1 reply)

Touring Joara 2011 was a great success with beautiful weather neat roads and cool car’s. I have had a lot of very positive feedback about the tour even though we had two mishaps. One caused by a deer that chose to end its life in front of a BMW and the other caused by me. After working for 9 months picking the route, finding worthwhile stopping locations, and driving it several times, I managed to have some issues. There were some misleading directions, questionable mileage between stops, and someone stole at least one road sign since I last drove the route. But that being said everyone proved to be very serious drivers and they all made it to the Catawba Meadows in time for the conclusion. So I tip my hat to everyone’s navigation abilities and fortitude.
Now I am looking for some feedback… This the second year for Touring Joara and it is time to decide if it ends here or goes on for 2012. I spent several hundred hours working on behalf of Exploring Joara Foundation on this event and I need to determine if it is time well spent. So if you drove on the tour in 2010 or 2011 let me know what you think. If you did not come on the tour let me know how I could have enticed you to come. And if you have ideas on how to get the word out about the tour please let me know your thoughts.
We had 9 less cars in 2012 than in 2011 and unless the numbers increase this event is not a finical benefit to the foundation which it is striving to raise funds for. Is it possible to have more than 60 cars on a tour such as this? Touring Joara 2011 was fun for me and now it is time to figure out if there will be a Touring Joara 2012.

You can register in Marion before the start if you have not registered yet between 8:00 and 8:30 at the corner of Logan and W. Henderson Street. I hope to have a few more cool cars on the tour!!!!

Hello my name is Scott Coley and I am the tour coordinator for Touring Joara 2011. Thank you for participating in the tour. While driving in the North Carolina Mountains and Foothills, you will see beautiful scenery and find wonderful winding roads. As the majority of the tour is rural, please keep a few things in mind:
• The tour route is self guided. You can proceed to the stops in any order you wish or follow the turn by turn directions provided with this mailing, which starts in Marion NC at the corner of W. Henderson Street and Logan Street.
• Cell phone coverage is slim in many areas but usually your signal will return just around the next corner.
• Gas stations are easiest to find in Marion and the Quaker Meadows area in Morganton but there is a gas station at Lake James, on Hwy 221 and past Little Switzerland near the Walmart off of Hwy. 226 and Halltown Road.
• Some curves are blind, almost “hair pins,” so please do not drive on the center line because of oncoming cars.
• Mind the speed limits (local law enforcement knows we are out here).
• Hotel space is limited. Some of the hotels available in the area are:
1. Switzerland Inn: P.O. Box 399 86 High Ridge Road Little Switzerland, NC 28749 Toll-free: 800-654-4026 or 828-765-2153
2. Hampton Inn: 115 Bush Drive Morganton, NC 28655 828-432-2000
3. Quality Inn: 2400 South Sterling Street Morganton, NC 28655 828-437-0171,
4. Days Inn and Suites: 100 Burkemont Ave Morganton, NC 28655 828-430-8778
5. Hampton Inn: 3560 US 221 South, Marion NC - (828) 652-5100
6. Days Inn Marion: 4248 Hwy 221 South I-40 & Hwy 22 Marion, NC 28752 US 828-659-2567
• If you wish to have breakfast at the Switzerland Inn, their breakfast is served from 7:30 AM - 10:30 AM and lunch is from 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM. Convenient locations for lunch in Morganton are Yiannis Restaurant at 112 W Union St, Murray’s of Morganton at 150 S. Sterling St, and Friday Friends at 315 Sanford Dr. There are many other restaurants to choose from in the downtown area as well and in the Quaker Meadows area.
• Directions to the Catawba Meadows Park:
From Hickory (I-40 West Bound) 23 miles, 25 minutes
Exit I-40 at #103 (Morganton/Rutherfordton) - go 0.2 miles to end of ramp.
Turn Right on Burkemont Avenue (US-64) - go 0.7 miles (beside stop light at
NCSD football field).
Turn Left on W Fleming Drive (US-70) - go 1.1 miles.
Continue straight onto Sanford Drive (US-64-BYP) - go 1.9 miles to park
entrance on the Left (Catawba Meadows Blvd).
From Asheville (I-40 East Bound) 50 miles, 55 minutes
Exit I-40 at #100 (Jamestown Road) - go 0.2 miles to end of ramp.
Turn Left on Jamestown Road - go 2.0 miles (in front of KFC).
Continue straight onto Independence Blvd - go 1.5 miles.
Turn Right on N Green Street (NC-181) - go 0.6 miles (over Catawba River
Bridge).
Turn Left on Sanford Drive (US-64-BYP) - go 0.7 miles to park entrance on
Left (Catawba Meadows Blvd).
• If you need road side, service one contact I would recommend is: Scott Farris - Burkemont Service Center in Morganton NC (828) 439-5557 or 828-439-5558. He has towing services available and has an extensive background working on European automobiles.
• The tour route is primarily fun, curvy, paved roads although at the Joara archeology site you will park basically in a field just off Henderson Mill road. We have parked over 400 cars there during field day over the summer without incident but proceed slowly. It would be smart to follow others at some distance if you feel the road surface is at all questionable.
• Stops will be open rain or shine starting at 9:00am with the Camp Lake James Stop and the Bear Creek Marina stops closing at 12:00 noon and the other stops closing at 2:00 pm. Your arrival at the Catawba Meadows Park should be between 2:30 and 3:30 pm.
• Catawba Meadows activities will end at 4:30 pm.
• In the June issue of Classic and Sports Car Magazine there was a supplement called 101 things to do with your classic before you die (or it does!) Out of the list of 101 there are several that you might be able to accomplish on Touring Joara like, 6) Go topless in the snow; even if you are driving a convertible it probably will not snow on October 1st in North Carolina, but we might get a surprise. 12) Drive it all year round; you could start this on October 1st through. 19) Help a stranded Classic; I hope this is not needed. 20) Wear branded gear, but don’t own the car; I know you have a shirt from a car brand that you once owned or would like to own. 28) Take a superb photograph of your classic; there are many beautiful locations on the tour route so don’t hesitate to pull off the road and take a photo. 29) Squeeze into a Mini; I am not sure if the owner would mind but this could be fun! 36) Be part of the local club scene: There will be several different types of car club members on the tour, so ask around. 44) Get your car in print: We will be taking photos of the cars on the tour and please send us your photos after the tour and your car just might end up in print. 49) Celebrate your cars birthday: My Fiat Spider 2000 was built in October 1979 - Happy Birthday! 50) Drive a pre-war car: I know there will be a few on the tour. 58) Share it with the family: Bring a family member with you on the tour. 61) Raise cash for charity: You will be doing this one – Thanks. 74) Race against a locomotive: Don’t do this. 75) Buy an eBay basket case at 12 am after 6 pints: This will be for after the tour. 78) Properly clean, polish and ‘detail’ your paintwork: If you are like me this is done quite often anyway. 81) Collect period accessories: Someone will win a Ford model T wrench with their poker prize – it could be you! 82) Drive across the USA from coast to coast: This could start with Touring Joara and end in LA. 85) Drive someone else’s car: You might have a friend that would like to trade for awhile. 91) Take dad to the pub: This one you will also have to do after the tour. 92) Subscribe to C&SC: This you can do from anywhere and I was "shocked" they included it in their 101! 100) Own a massive American classic: I know of at least one that will be on the tour and it meets the #50 as well.
Thanks again for being part of Touring Joara and I hope you have a great time on the tour!

Next Saturday, September 24, at Rocks State Park near Bel Air Maryland. Always an excellent turnout of all kinds of British cars (not just for MGs) along with Pit Beef sandwiches and hand-cut fries that alone are worth attending!

I hope to see you there.
