They are held Tuesday through Friday in a number of locations, so there's no real excuse for not getting out in your MG (or other special interest/vintage vehicle)

Last fall, just after getting Dorothy back from "open heart surgery", her exhaust was hanging a bit lower than usual and I slowly pulled it off her header going over a sidewalk. She's had her pipe stuffed back into place and wired up, but I should really do a proper job of it.
Anyone with a garage lift that has a spare couple hours that I could take advantage of, could be the recipient of some very nice beerz....

Happy Sunday, clubsters!

FYI, I've taken the liberty of shrinking a bunch of the uploaded pictures in our Picasa Web albums.
Specifically, where original / full size JPG images are uploaded, each picture is typically 5MB each (for a typical 4000 x 3000 pixel image). When shrunk down to 1600 x 1200 pixels, each image averages 0.3MB ...a HUGH differnce! The assumption is that these pictures are viewed online so they don't need to be very high resolution. 1600 or even 800 pixels is usually good.

I'm going to update our website Gallery page with some brief instructions on how to resize pictures while uploading them, but it'll be a couple days before I get it posted.

A couple of noteworthy points:
- Google has increased the base (FREE!) storage capacity from 1GB to 5GB ...we were at 1GB, I've shrunk it to 0.6GB so we have over 4GB available!
- Any pictures that are 800 pixels, or less, on their longest side, are not included in the storage calculations. Pictures this "small" are free - we can post an UNLIMITED number of pictures of this size
- If you are interested in printing a particular image, then it's best to get the original full size image. Please make note of the album name and photo name and send us a note so that we can find out who the owner is

That's it for now!
Cheers!
Hi From Australia,

Are you able to shed any light on this A90 Atlantic, which I understand is located in your area? I own several Atlantics, including the only known prototype to survive. One of my hobbies is to try and list all surviving Atlantics. I came across this photo recently. I already have two others in the Calgary area on my list.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Now that the driving season in the Great White North is over, inside activities take over.

The newly elected executive of the CMGCC has an ambitious agenda of activities in various stages of planning for the frozen months, including guest speakers for our monthly meetings, Sunday brunch outings, "members helping members" Saturday's and volunteer opportunities, including vehicle preparation for the Olds College/Jack Anderson Collector Vehicle Auction to be held in June of 2013.

Monthly club meetings are held at the Royal Canadian Legion 284, 606 38th Ave NE, Calgary on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm (19:30 for you military types)

December's meeting is our annual Christmas celebration, and although numbers have already been established for catering purposes, last minute guests will receive a warm welcome as usual (though we may not be able to feed you). Please bring a non perishable gift of food for the Calgary Food Bank to help spread the good will of the season.

Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year to one and all.

The Spring Thaw has been so popular for the last four years, we decided to start a new event in September called The Fall Freeze.
In the past we've had plenty of Alberta driver's join us, and wanted to extend an invite to to your club to join in on the fun with other classic car and driving enthusiasts.

The Fall Freeze is a budget-minded driving adventure through British Columbia for pre-1979 touring and sportscars. This un-scored, non-competitive event takes place entirely within the province of British Columbia and consists of approximately 1200km of driving over three days. Organized by Squamish Classic Car Adventures and West Coast Rally Association, the event uses straight-forward route instructions that won't require a calculator or any rally experience. We're here to show you great roads, and great friends...not here to get you lost!

Similar to CCA’s “Spring Thaw”, the route will remain secret until competitors receive their entry packages at registration. Way-finding instructions will be detailed and clear, and will not require any calculations or rally knowledge. The event consists of 100% paved roads, mountainous terrain and driving is scheduled during daylight hours. The Fall Freeze is open to sport, touring and classic cars from 1979 and earlier. Sorry, no trucks or motorcycles. All vehicles must meet legal road-worthiness standards, and we recommend they be ready for a long weekend of driving through mountains and winding roads (though, past history has shown breakdowns are just as entertaining for the rest of us!). Think you’ve got a unique car that fits, but doesn’t meet the age category? Feel free to contact us.

The entry for the Fall Freeze is now open, and we anticipate that space will fill up quickly.
Base Entry Fee: $450.00
Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) $ 54.00
Total Entry Fee $504.00 CAN or USD

Entry deadline is September 1st, or when all spaces are filled. Included with your entry fee are two nights accommodation (two adults), dinner each night, route book, event decals and a Fall Freeze Schwag-Bag.

Any questions about the event should be directed to info@classiccaradventures.com.
I have been on other car events but I must say that the Spring Thaw Adventure seemed to put the emphasis on “Adventure”. After seeing the many different cars and talking with many people at the event, I am left wondering if it is the Spring Thaw that attracts the “Adventurous” people and their cars or is “Adventurous” just part of the nature of the people from British Columbia? Gents, once again, a stunning success. One of the things I love about the Thaw is that there’s so much more to offer than a “one marque” outing. Last year I learned that Alfas may look high to the uninitiated (me!) compared to many other sports cars, but they excel in the twisties when you add in a bump or two – as in, “real roads.” This year, one of the things I learned is just how much power a 6 cylinder Jaguar has, on the long hill climbing out of Merritt. I’ve never seen one driven like that, and it was impressive! -Duncan
Nothing against MGB's, but this show wasn't overrun with them in this the 50th anniversary year, though 50% of our group were carried east by them. 2 Midgets an ERA and a TD carried the rest.

Our only vehicle problems involved the ERA with a disconnected tie rod which created more than a little excitement for Mike Holtz, and Azim Bhatia with a rock in his windshield in Kindersley outbound followed by a dislodged exhaust after an encounter with a small crater in the same town on the return. Gordon Parker also suffered a rock chip coming home with the TD.

If you are waiting to see what the weather will do, and show up at the last minute to register, you MAY still be able to pay the registration and get your car on the field, but will be excluded from the many awards that may be presented to registrants.
For those wishing to meet up with Calgary departing vehicles, early folks ( mostly committee members ) are meeting at the Cochrane Ab Tim Hortons on Thursday at 9:30am and leaving by 10. 4 cars at present count.
Those leaving Friday should post here or contact an executive member with possible meeting venues and times, alternately follow the link to the "meetup forum"

Calgary clubsters...

I thought I'd open this thread for our garage / workshop days, 3rd Saturday of each month.

First off, thanks again for the help in March taking off Dorothy's head! I was delayed a couple weeks getting it into D&W for a strip and inspect, and they've been busy as well so it will still be a couple of weeks before I have her back on the road.

I had to miss the last club meeting so I'm not sure whether there's been any Saturday garage days, but I haven't seen any mention of them on the website or in emails. I also realize that not everyone in the club uses MGExperience

As much as I'm busy with work, renos, a 7month preggo wife, etc... I love gettin' dirty, learning and helping! Count me in if at all possible if any of you need extra hands.

Perhaps this thread can be used as an open forum for any planned work. Post your thoughts, dates and dreams!
Cheers!

Race City Speedway - this weekend is the last of the vintage races!
Sunday noon is a "go" for Novice Lapping session.

Since I'm a tarmac-virgin, I'm nervously excited!!!

My Uncle John that spent years rebuilding "Dorothy" would have loved to see her run a few laps on a track. She's NOT rebuilt for racing, but is setup with "fast road" bits. I've got a whole laundry list of To Dos, but there's a couple of key things she needs before she hits the track....

If any of you fine gents or ladies have experience tuning MGBs for races, and have some time on Saturday (tomorrow), I'm going to be doing some tweaking to get her running a little better. I haven't done any tuning myself yet, so would love the wisdom of someone who's done this a few times. She's pinging under load (sometimes), and hesitates under load around 3,500rpm when too hot under the hood, and has a case of bump-steer. I've been planning on tackling this stuff in the fall, but should really look to get as many quirks smoothed out as possible before Sunday. Dorothy just ran us to Vancouver & back so I'm assuming she'll make it around a couple times. ...and I'm totally cool with being at the (far) back of the pack... ;)

I live near SAIT, so if you can spare some time and expertise, this rookie will gladly repay you with some labour as needed!

Cheers! Hope to see y'all there...

I thought I would start a thread for the upcoming Fernie run.

I heard some concerns about bridge construction and delays on highway 22 South of Longview. I drove to Fernie last night via Hwy 22, and didn't encounter any problems. While there is some construction, it is nothing major - the bridge deck is reduced to one lane, with one way traffic controlled by a temporary traffic light. The light was red when I got there, but I would say I was delayed by ~1 minute. The bridge deck itself wasn't too bumpy, and the road was paved and in good condition on both sides. I've attached a photo I snapped while waiting for the light to turn green.

There was also a small detour in Black Diamond as they are doing some work on the main road. The detour only takes you a couple of blocks out of the way, and again doesn't delay you much.

Anyone who has driven highway 3 between the Crowsnest Pass and Fernie in the last year or so will have run into the construction on the Corbin Overpass just before Sparwood. The work on the overpass is very nearly complete, the new bridge is open and the road is fully paved. The speed limit is still reduced to 80 km/h on the overpass, but again this does not cause much delay.

I'm not sure which route the larger group is going to take, but the roadwork on highway 22 certainly isn't anything to worry about.

Just a reminder that July 30th is the Sunfest in Inglewood. This is a great community event in a heritage neighborhood. Last year we breakfasted at the Harley Davidson Diner, shopped in the antique and unique shops. Lots of on site entertainment and a strong interest was shown in the vehicles. It is usually covered by a local TV broadcast as Jim H. can attest. I would like to get a show of hands at the next club meeting for attendance. The weather is historically great for sun tanning a great family event without the drive.

Am I allowed to do this and if so can someone please tell me how. I can enter them to My Photos, but I want an album to be available for all to see. The pics I have are just a few from the Three Hills run we made June 4th, 2011.

Hi! I'm a new member. Showed my face at the May meeting. Very proud of taking ownership (last summer) of my uncle John's MGB after he passed away! See my profile and first couple of journal entries for some further background....

I'm reading & learning a lot, but would love to have a mentor. I've done quite a bit to get to know "Dorothy" and want to continue to do as much work on her myself as possible. My uncle put a lot of goodies into her: she's modified as "fast road" - but not stripped/built for racing.

If you - or someone you know - has good mechanical knowledge on suspension and engine tuning, has some time available, and can put up with some naive questions, please drop me a note! I live just a couple of blocks north of SAIT in the NW.

My two main concerns are:

addressing the suspension quirks (bounce-steer, etc)

tuning the engine (hp, hesitation, etc)

If anyone knows an efficient way to get rid of most of the greasy crud under the car...(not that I'm afraid of a little grease!)

Cheers!

June 10, 2011, Day 1, 312 miles:
After packing the luggage area of the MGB GT with a bit of clothing, tools and spare parts we left Calgary on a nice sunny morning. After a stop at a local Starbucks our next stop was the Dewinton Weigh Scale station: 1,290 kg all in with 2 passengers.
After several hours of driving, a pleasant chat with the US Customs sheriff at Carway, we then chatted with the sheriff at the St Mary's gate to the Going to the Sun pass: "...we received 200% of the average snow fall and they can't even see the buildings at the top of the pass, let alone the road...". We all chuckle and headed further south and reached Kalispell, our first overnight stop, in late afternoon.
The MGB GT is performing very well but for one 'almost expected' annoyance. As we drove past the city limits of Calgary I tested the overdrive ... and nothing happened, then a few seconds later the O/D electric circuit lost its smoke at the switch, within the steering cowl cover; O/D switch immediately turned OFF.
Two weeks ago, when I took the MGB for its spring lube service and check-up, we noticed that the wire of the O/D solenoid was very frail. The wire was pampered but we all agreed that the solenoid should be replaced. As I left the shop the O/D still worked perfectly, no worries! The usual suppliers have back-ordered the MGB solenoid, therefore we left Calgary with the solenoid with the frail wire.
No worries, we plan to drive secondary twisty roads and not having any smoke in the O/D electrical circuit won't be too critical.
Tomorrow the objective is to cross from Montana to Idaho through the Lolo Pass and proceed west through Idaho.

We have a member seeking information/assistance:

Member writes:
I have an early 1951 TD [vin TD7173] which had an unacceptable steering wheel vibration at 50/55 mph at time of purchase. The front hubs and brake drums are a one piece iron casting, a feature that was changed later in 1951 to separate hubs and drums presumably because of balancing problems. The wheels run true, the tire/wheel combinations have been balanced on two machines [with comparable results], I have statically balanced the hub/drum castings with the addition of lead weights, and finally statically balanced the complete hub/drum/wheel/tire combinations. The vibration has been significantly reduced but is still annoying as it occurs at a comfortable cruising speed. Obviously there is a dynamic imbalance in one or both hub/brake drum castings.

The solution would appear to be to have the wheels balanced on one of those machines that balanced the whole wheel assembly by spinning it whilst mounted on the car. I have not seen one for decades and very few of the current generation of tire mechanics are aware that such machines were in common use !

Has anyone tackled this problem, or have a suggestion of what further ways I should try to solve it ? Or perhaps someone knows where a "1950s" wheel balancer is. Or maybe there is a donor car of later vintage willing to part with its separate hubs and drums.

Lots of chatting and coffee were enjoyed at the Glenmore Inn today at our table of 15 happy brunchers! We enjoyed this winter get-together so much we want to do it again - Derek/I plan to make reservations at the Sirocco Golf Club for Sunday, March 6th at 10:30 a.m.

Sirocco is closed until February 2nd for their winter break, so we'll contact them sometime after that and send a note to Club members to confirm the details and take names of those interested.
