Hey everyone,
I had been putting off dealing with increasing play in my clutch pedal for some time. Turns out after 44 yrs the clevis pin had worn down and elongated the holes in the pedal and master cylinder push rod. My options on the pedal are pretty simple, replace or weld in the hole and re drill. As for the push rod, can it be replaced without disassembling the entire master? It seemed to be attached unlike the slave.

Thanks

Hi All,
Checking front alignment today during reassembly. With all new bushings, kingpins, tierods etc. I have without any shims negative camber of -3/8 on driver (L) side and -3/4 on (R) side.
Both sides have +8 deg caster, and if I remember a post Mark did on alignment, that more is better, so i think I'll leave it there.
Question is, how many degrees does each shim bring the camber towards positive?
And some have said the offside (curb) should have a bit of difference to offset road crown.
Any thoughts on this before I final tighten everything up?

Thanks,

Hi can anyone help ?
I have an MGB Roadster 1970 automatic, Im just running her in, but have found that the gearbox seems reluctant to get into top gear. All the other gears are relatively smooth
but top seems very stiff and pops out. Is there anything I need to adjust ? Thanks Pam

I have checkt the torque converter thats fine checkt fluid and filter too, I have been told to check the throttle cable as it could be too tight,
this makes sense becasue the gear changes are a tad tight and resistant but I put this down to "Running In" also we did change the cable, so
will check that out later, any more suggestions would be very very grateful THANK YOU >:D< Pam

Hello all,

I have just completed a triple SU installation on my C (as mentioned by Bruce in his earlier post), based on the same manifold construction as Bill Spohn. This involved splicing 1½ TR4A manifolds - all went relatively smoothly and I am pleased with the result. I shortened the front dashpot to ensure sufficient clearance to the bonnet (hood). Clearance at the rear required trimming the brake booster bracket and moving it back ½". Using a triumph bike throttle splitter allowed the 3 chokes to operate together (another of Bruce's ideas). Throttle linkage uses Austin 1800 parts, as in the original Downton kits.

I have started with the original BAD needles with a noticeable improvement in response relative to the original twin setup. So far it is a very satisfying change.

Relative to the Downton manifolds, these have longer runners and are horizontal, rather than rising up to the head from a low position.

If anyone is interested in making a similar manifold, I have a ½ left over which is available - you only need to find one complete manifold.

Regards,

I am struggling to find the answer to why the C keeps tripping on me. Le me preface this with the car ran flawlessly all last year and during many runs during the winter.

The problem is the car will run great but once pushed a bit, i get a loss of power and, at times, a sputter/spit of the carburetor. once this happens the car has to limp home. i can barely make it around the block. A few weeks ago I posted about this and thought it was electrical. I had the distributor rebuilt and it looks fantastic (thanks Jeff!). Now I have no idea what to look at next. My timing is set to 8deg at 1000rpm w/o vacuum advance attached. The carbs are set to give a brief increase in rpm when just lifted then a fall.

Any thoughts? I'm at a loss as to. What could be the problem. Think the carbs need to be rebuilt? I overhauled them myself a few years ago so the are nice an clean.

Thanks all,

Hey all you smart guys! So I'd like an MGC with 4sp OD transmission but most available Cs have the Auto.
Is the MGC 4/OD the same as the B 4/OD (early) and are there any issues with putting one into a C Auto car?
I'm assuming the later B 4 synchro will not work as the splines are different ...correct?

Hi everyone,

Am new to the forum and getting my 68 MGC back on the road for the summer (if we get one in the uk this year)

I have painted wire wheels at the moment but was toying with the idea of trying to tweak the look of the car with some alloys but cant seem to find a source of centre lock alloys other than the MGOC and everyone seems to have those!!

Can anyone point me in the right direction as want something a bit unique that looks more modern and fits in with the classic look as well.

Thanks

Hi all,
In discussion with a local owner who has just fitted the triple SU conversion to his roadster, we discussed the interference between the # 3 float bowl and air filter housing to the servo mounting, Downton said to just bend the servo mounting out of the way [very 'Heath Robinson' approach] this was just too crude for me so I removed the mounting and cut away the interfering section. Later on while rebuilding the servo I decided to move the mounting closer to the wing (Fender) and as well moved it back half an inch. This gives adequate clearances and the servo can still be removed from it's mounting. After deciding that Downtons El-Cheapo fuel distribution was a PITA as it had to be removed every time I changed air filters I ran the fuel distribution along the chassis side and fed the # 3 float bowl with a hose passing through the big opening in the servo bracket.

A few years ago the Coopers 6111T paper element filters were NLA so I changed to K&N E-3180 elements. This required removing the rim from the SU air filter mounting, these Downton supplied housings are all offset to the front of the car and were originally fitted to the Volvo P1800 I think, [The Coopers 6111T elements were definately for the Volvo P1800 as I bought my elements from a Volvo dealer] the K&N's are 1/4" larger in diameter. Any one who has a Downton Stage 3 (Kit 45) may like to change from paper to re-useable elements. The outer cover is a 5" rubber sanding disk holder for a drill or angle grinder with the centre drilled out. This seals well and looks OK as the element and disc are both black.
The attached photos show it all.

I may have put this on some time ago, I cannot remember. I was asked by a friend in the UK if I still had the article on replacing the noisy power sapping plastic fan on the MGC. In one of my articles I detail fitting a BMW clutch fan assembly which is bloody expensive here, if new parts are used.
The attached article is from an MGC-GT owner in South Australia where it can be extremely hot. Ian found that GM Holden had used a Nissan Skyline 3 litre engine in one of it's Commodore models.
The attached article explains finding the parts, the models to look for at the wreckers and fitting the assembly to the MGC water pump. Ian fitted this in 2003 and finds he no longer has a temperature problem now.

Just used the K&N air filter cleaning kit to clean the HIF-4 K&N filters on the 80 MGB. Then, I pulled the air filters on the MGC to see how dirty they were. Ended up installing my last set of new Crossland filters. Then it occurred to me that I should try and clean the dirty Crossland filters using the K&N cleaning fluid and gently rinse the filters from the inside out. I know they're paper, but the alternative is to discard the dirty filters. It's worth a try since there are no more Crossland filters available. I'll let you know how it goes.

Had a nice time at the Tulip Rallye last weekend except for the wipers freezing in the middle of windshield. Poured down rain on the way home which made it an exciting trip. I could get maybe one or two swipes out of the system and then would lock.

Am planning to replace both wheelboxes. The driver's side one has a bent shaft and the gear is worn down to nada. Probably stripped out from being stiff.
The motor appears to be in good condition but the grease is the sriffest material I have seen in some time. The transmission and wire are in good shape.

The two questions are:
1. What is the best grease to use in the wiper transmission/gear assembly that won't destroy the phenolic gears? Could I successfully use the grease used on power tools that use phenolic gear sets?
2. What luck have you all had with the new wheelboxes?

Thanks

CBA XXXIII

Tentative schedule of events (subject to change):

NOTE - INDIANA IS NOW A NON-SMOKING STATE - NO SMOKING IS ALLOWED IN PUBLIC AREAS, RESTAURANTS, HOTELS, ET CETERA.

Wednesday - July 10th: Arrivals; Welcome to CBAXXXIII. Get to know the hotel and surrounding area. Note - I've learned that Wednesday is the ONLY day that track/ground tours of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be available. These tours ($25/person) take you on a lap of the track (in the tour bus, NOT your MG) then into Gasoline Alley, the pagoda, the "Yard of Bricks" and "Winners Circle". Jaguar and other teams/companies have rented the facility on ALL other days that we will be in Indy. If you wish to take a tour of the grounds/facility, you will need to do so on Wednesday afternoon. A tour is available at 1:15pm and at 3:00pm. Sorry!

Thursday - July 11th: Arrivals; Self guided tours to Columbus, IN, and the Covered Bridges of Parke County, IN. Dinner (on your own) that evening at the Union Jack Pub in Speedway, IN (about a mile away from the hotel). I have reserved the outside deck as well as tables inside the Pub; we also have reserved parking near the deck. The Union Jack has a good selection of meals on the menu as well as a good selection of ales available for your enjoyment. Tire kicking and lie swapping in the parking lot and hospitality room of the Clarion Waterfront.

Friday - July 12th: - Arrivals; Caravan to Skillman Classic Cars and self-guided tour of the collection on Friday morning. (Take as much time as you desire!) Lunch on your own. Friday afternoon - "walking/talking" tours of the MGC tourer and GT in the parking lot of the Clarion Waterfront. Tech sessions as they present themselves. Friday evening - dinner on your own (I'm looking for nearby restaurants that could accommodate us as a group.) More tire kicking an lie swapping in the parking lot and hospitality room of the Clarion Waterfront that evening.

Saturday - July 13th: Trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum where we will hold our "car show and voting" as well as have self-guided tours of the museum. You may enter and exit the museum as many times as you wish during our visit to the facility. (I tried to get a personalized, guided tour of the museum for the group. This is "verboten" according to my contacts at the museum. I will try to get one of the "docents" present that day to guide us around, but cannot guarantee that this will happen.) We will spend the morning at the Speedway before heading to downtown Speedway where we will visit the Dalarra Indycar Factory. There will be a $10/person fee for this visit (payable at the door) - this is a discounted rate for our group. The entry fee includes a movie about the Dalarra company, a tour of the facility where they make most and assemble most of the parts for the Dalarra chassis used in Indycar racing today, and the opportunity for a hands-on experience in an Indycar simulator. (We'll be having some type of competition (best lap time, fastest speed, etc) while we're at Dalarra. For lunch, there is an Italian restaurant onsite that is reasonably priced, or if you prefer there are two or three restaurants within walking distance of the factory that you can experience. Additionally, Sarah Fisher just built her race shoppe next door to the Dalarra factory (she was moving into the facility when I visited the area on April 19th). I will find out if public tours of her shoppe will be available to us. You may stay at the Dalarra Indycar Factory as long as you wish. (They close at 5pm). Saturday evening we will have our banquet at the Clarion Waterfront in one of their banquet rooms. After our meal, we will have our auction and present awards from the car show held earlier on Saturday. We can then retire to the hospitality suite or to the parking lot for.......more lie swapping and tire kicking.

Special thanks to Drew Hastings, Tony Shoviak, and Bob Lewis for the assistance that they have provided in the planning of this event!

I went to look because I was told it was a MGB GT with a Rover V8, so I was a little dissappointed, but it was still a neat project waiting to be had. A 1969 MGC GT with the automatic tranny. The owner is older than dirt and is definitely not a "MG guy". He knows some stuff about his car, but I was educating him a little here and there (for example, he is convinced it is a "MGCC" for "coupe"... lol).

The short of it is that it is a complete car and would be a solid basis for a restoration. The bad is the owner thinks it is a good driver that is worth way more than what he paid for it six years ago ($6500), even if it hasn't been on the road for years. It was originally the cream color from that year and it has been oversprayed rather sloppily with this shade of red. There is definitely some shoddy bodywork under the newish paint and who knows what issues the chassis and drivetrain have. He said he "put $1700 into the brakes", but the front rotors were old and grooved, and nothing under the hood had been touched, so I'm not sure where he dumped that money into it. Also, he touted a new grill, but it had also been overspayed on really bad. Soooo...

If interested it is in Marysville, Washington. He threw out the figure of $17500 initially, but then quit joking and said $8500. I still thought he was joking, but unfortunately he was serious. I bid him good day.

To vent or not to vent - that is the question! Whether tis nobler to fit a vented fuel cap or an unvented one . . . Woe is me . . .

(The key has just bust on my cap - when I go to fuel up, and remove the cap, there is a bit of 'sucking sound' as the cap comes off - is that ok or not?. I see from good old Moss that they sell vented and unvented caps - which to get??!!)

OK, new poly bushings all round, rear "parabolic" springs, stainless braided brake and clutch hoses, and water pump courtesy of our very own Capt Kirk are now installed on the car, and WOW, what a difference. It's like a new car. This is the first major work I've undertaken since acquiring the car 18 months ago, so I am really pleased with the improvement in an already decent driving car.

I have only driven about 25 miles of in city freeway and city streets, so not exactly a comprehensive "road test", but the bushings have given the car a very solid feel helped by the parabolic rear springs which seem to be a little stiffer than the admittedly worn and weak multi leafs, and though I also re-did the brake boosters in addition to the new brake hoses, the brakes have a much improved feel, as does the clutch. The braided hoses have given the hydraulics a much more "positive" feel.

Later into the season will come the Herbold triple carb conversion, but for now I just can't wait to get out and put some miles on this baby and get ready for MG 2013 in Corvalis. >:D<

He claims its a 67 but im just not sure about that. I know they made the cars from 67-69 but I've searched and have not seen 1 person that has a 67 model (american spec). Does anybody know why that is? And would it be worth more restored? The car does need a ton of work but I should be in a position to start restoring it (if possible) pretty soon. I mean can you even get parts? And completely restored, how much would it be worth? Thanks

Hi all,
Thanks to Larry of San Diego I have been able to have a PPT file converted to a PDF file and this is an interesting Power Point slide show of MGC's imported by the NZ BMC dealers around the time the "Truck" arrived here.

I sent details of my car GCD1-2348G to NZ and the car # caused a bit of interest, the car arrived here on the 5th of August 1968 on the "Auckland Star" as deck cargo. The ship then went on to NZ with some of these featured cars on board going by the car #'s. A lot of the cars sold in NZ are still on the road. They were never imported into Australia probably because of the Duty 45% + Sales Tax of 27.5% on the Duty paid price. Our government likes to rob the people.

After taking the car out numerous times during dryspells of winter to keep things moving (and working flawlessly), my C has now decided to start to give me issues. I think I know the problem but I wanted to run it by the crew before I act.

The car started to sputter under load a couple of weeks ago. I checked my timing at it was off considerably. I re-adjusted it (5° BTDC for NA spec) and thats when the problems started. The car would start...and sound fine. Then a bit of gas and the engine dies suddenly. Then it spins and spins without spark. It will refire again sometimes...but follows the same pattern. I tried to adjust my distributor back to where it was but that doesn't help. I checked the coil and its working fine. I suspect the distributor though the condensor is only about a year old. My plan was to send it out to Jeff for a rebuild.

My question is does that sound like the problem?

Thanks all!

Hello Guys,

yesterday we drove the C for the first time in months. The weather in Holland made driving convertibles a cold experience the last months!!!

I had a very strange behaviour on the brakes.
The car had a normal brake until after 50Km's i braked, normal feel, got off the gas, kept braking en suddenly the pedal fell down. On releasing and braking again it felt normal and no more problems during the rest of the drive.
What can cause this behaviour?

greetings

I am currently refurbishing my brakes and have now got to the leaky master cylinder on my GT which I cannot figure how to remove.

The attached photo shows the top through bolt and nut removed. However, the lower fixing appears to have a locknut fitted from the rear into a stud fixed into the black square bar below the cylinders. The nut is vitually impossible to access even from inside the car with the large rubber gromit removed. This arrangement differs from the manual and the parts catalogues I have looked at.

Anyone got any ideas on how to get to the nut and why my arrangement is different to the manual?

Other brake related questions:

1) The master cylinder I have on order and the illustrations in the manual and parts catalogues do not have the adjustable push rod arrangement that are on my car. My existing master cylinder looks non standard? The clutch master cylinder also looks non standard and has the problem on the lower fixing.

2) I found the threads stripped on the bleed screw on one of the calipers. I have got new calipers from the MGOC but I was wondering if it could be repaired?

3) I had the usual leaky servo which I have already replaced. I found that the non return valve was not a valve at all and you could blow through it both ways. Could this have contributed to servo's demise?

The weather in the UK has suddenly improved and I was really looking forward to some MG motoring but the master cylinder issue is going to slow me down!

Hi: I am new to this forum, but I might be buying a non-running mgc gt. Well, it really is just a wrecked car that I am going to try to put back on the road.
Going to need a ton of work, but I want to learn on this car, and I figure the worst that can happen is I have to part the car out and help keep some mgc gts on the road.
It is my understanding that the gt fender from a mgb gt will work, and I have read that a tr4 master brake cylinder can be used for the mgc one. Is this information correct?
Does anyone have any ideas for used parts. I have the Victoria British catalog here, but 700.00 for a fender would not work very well.
thanks for any help,
Although better than the original unit it replaced, I still get all the usual distributor-type problems e.g. occasional misfiring, poor hot starting, dwell on acceleration, etc., etc.,
All the self-appointed experts tell me I should fit an electronic ignition distributor; the problem for me is I simply don`t know which one, and who I should buy it from.
Any other "experts" with practical experience able to help?

Hello.

Neither the Moss 780-380, nor the V.B. 5-204, steering rack bellows will fit on my 1968 MGC GT.

Their large end measures 1 1/2-inch internal diameter opening, but the large end on my rack is 1 7/8-inch external diameter, not counting the lip.

Are they designed to be this small? I can't stretch the new bellows enough to fit over the rack opening.

I seem to remember a business in England that produced an aftermarket steering rack for the MGC.

How can I tell if this car has one of those aftermarket steering racks? Markings?

If that's what I have, do their aftermarket steering racks require a different size bellows? Do you know the part number?

What is the name of that business for me to contact?

Or alternative / crossover bellows (Triumph, etc.)?

Thank you.

I replaced rear cylinders, rebuilt the calipers, new shoes - the servos had already been rebuilt along with the master cylinder and I added new grommets to the servo to vacuum hose connectors but the servos still worked when they felt like it. This makes spirited driving a little tricky.

I finally got around to removing the one way valve in the manifold, only to find it isnt a valve at all - just a straight through connector. A previous owner had added a plastic one way valve (picture below). Here is where the problem was. The one way valve worked fine EXCEPT that there is a small open nozzle at one side that was open to the vacuum! I put a 2c rubber nipple over the opening, reassembled, mounting the valve on the firewall to clean it up and now the brakes work as they should. What a relief.

Tomorrow I should have my registration and plates for some real testing.....
Full choke, started OK, running at fast idle with choke ( 1200 +rpm ?)
Pressed clutch and tried to select a gear.. serious crunch in all gears, no chance of selecting a gear... as if clutch was not working.
I pumped the clutch 5 or 6 times, still no good.
I put the choke back in, so that the engine just about stalled ( say 500 rpm or less) and was now able to select a gear, no problem. No problem driving it at all. Everything absolutely normal. No strange noises, or difference in "feel".

This morning I pushed the car to the edge of a small slope ouside my garage. I put the car in gear without engine running.
Used the clutch to start and stop the car from rolling down the slope. Clutch action seems to be working fine. With bite point half way to the floor.
The problem only seems to occur on cold start up, at high revs.

Hi,

I would be really keen to know if anyone can give me a fair/rough even.. idea of how many factory new LHD European specification models remain on the roads.(mine is in the garage)

Perhaps some of our European or British enthusiasts will know. I have seen several European owners that have converted British RHD cars to LHD and also US pillow dash models imported into Europe.

I have not researched my roadster as yet but believe it will have been built later in 68 to 1968 specs. Non USA model, steel dash, single circuit brakes oil pressure measured in metric rather than lbs/sq inch, and a steering lock on the column (would love to replace that as has been broken for past 27 years)

Any thoughts appreciated.... sensible or otherwise even :)

Thanks John.

Uncovered the MGC a couple of days ago to stat using it. It wasn't uneventful.

Although we'd been turning it over every month to prevent the clutch disc from bonding to the flywheel and it had tried to fire up a couple of times (I don't choke it as I have no desire to start it), it refused to start up when I WANTED it to run.

Some head scratching later, I found the issue which I'll pass on in case it helps someone else. The rotor had built up some corrosion and thus a high resistance interface. Always carry spare ignition bits, so some emery cloth on the end of the spindle to adjust fit and a replacement from the boot had it fire up right away.

At which point the spin on adaptor chose to puke oil between its base and the filter head, even though it was quite tight against a new O ring. Took 10 minutes to remove the spin on assembly and toss it into a box and replace it with the original standing fit canister filter and away we went.

If its not one thing its another, but at least we are back in business!

He had a full restoration done in Naples, FL and the shop that did it installed A/C and a 73 dash whilst keeping everything in the passenger compartment and engine bay looking very original; even painting (I'm assuming) the new fuel lines to make them look like very well preserved originals. (there was a bit of shiny stainless showing at the bottom of the vertical hose where it connects to the 'round the front' line or I'd have thought they *were* perfectly preserved originals.)

Suddenly everyone seems to be selling their MGCs over here... 2 were sold on the site below in the last 2 months... Now

First this cheap import from UK...
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mg/mgc/auction-576372344.htm

Then a US roadster (3 wipers, us inlet manifold) converted to RHD... Expensive but probably a nice car
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mg/mgc/auction-564787013.htm

And finally, because we know the Aussies love their V8s...

This V8 conversion out of Queensland... Maybe Bruce knows something about it...?

Several of the readers here already know I propose making a heat shield for the triple Herbold and/or Downton intake set up but frankly have not gotten the kind of interest it takes to move the project forward. These will be made out of polished stainless and include insulation to try and contain the vapor lock issue of USA petrol laced with whiskey ;)
It looks like a synthetic titanium impregnated product capable of 1200 degrees is the soup d'jour I will employ for insulation. Even an MGC doesn't normally get that hot. X(
They also will include tabs for the carb and throttle springs. If asked a few dollars can be saved making them from paintable galvanized.

Another High Performance item on the drawing board just now is an alloy fly wheel for the MGC.
The stock unit weighs 44 lbs and virtually the entire community sees a benefit by lightening it 13 or so pounds. The alloy wheel will weigh just 11 lbs and will give instant acceleration gratification for sure.B)- A minimum run of 10 units is required and the price point now is within the ball park of racing style flywheels of this size.
FYI, this isn't me or my buddy Bubba, it is from a legitimate after market manufacturer that supplies such items to a wealth of aftermarket and race community vendors.

As you may or may not know, creating parts for our venerable cars is a market risk for the one doing so. I don't really ask for a bonafide commitment but if there is the least bit of interest it would certainly hearten me to possibly go forward.

I encourage a discussion here but suggest serious inquires be directed to my email or PM if you so choose.

Hello. I am still feeling my way around MGs and have yet to make a purchase yet. The 6 cylinder MGC is appealing to me for the additional horsepower, but I have been cautioned that "parts are difficult to find". Is this true? I know body-wise it is almost identical to the MGB, except for the front suspension, rear axle, springs and the bonnet (which I like the look of better than the B). If the parts are difficult to get it would be a negative for me as I would want something that would be easier and less costly to repair. I recently saw one that was available and am waiting to go see it. Thanks for any input. Bob

Hi!

I hope to find some answers here...
Well, I just finished off a job on a beautiful MGC -69, tuning up the carbs and ignition.
The engine runs well and the temperature is spot on.
However...
When I stop the engine there's a whisle from the engine, a bit hard to lockate but I believe it's from the back of the head. My fear is that it might be a boiling sound, but stangely enought there's no overpressure in the coolingsystem..?

Is there anyone that experienced similar problems (if it now is a problem..)? If so, is there a good solution?

Had to make a heatshield for the 3 carb setup. I had already Jet Hot coated the stock exhaust manifolds, and was not able to spring for the headers at this time. Made a couple of block off plates for the connectors to the stock intake manifold, (N.A. version only?). Then bent up some sheet stock used for a pattern till it fit well. After all looked like it might work, bent a final version out of stainless.

Received this in an email forwarded by our local MG Club. Thought someone might be interested.

>From Les B, UK board:
"Les Bengtson, Arizona, USA
The MG wrecking yard in Phoenix, Arizona is projected to close by the end of 2013. After the death of Bob Schaulin last year, his brother, Gilbert, has decided to sell off the entire inventory and move to Colorado where the majority of his family resides.

At the current time, Gilbert is selling off as many parts and vehicles as he can and intends to scrap out any that are not sold. He currently has a relatively large inventory of MGBs (roadsters and some GTs), some Triumphs (a GT-6 and some Spitfires), some Midgets/Sprites, and a few other vehicles. For the first time in over 20 years, he is selling off some of his MGAs and Austin-Healeys.

Many transmissions, engines, and multiple body parts are available. Wire and disc wheels, some factory and after market are available. Almost any part, accumulated over more than 25 years in the business, can be had.

But, parts are being scrapped almost every day as Gil tries to clear out the yard, ship some of the more commonly needed parts up to Colorado, and clean off the property so he can put that, too, up for sale.

Gilbert's telephone number is 602-290-4096. Arizona does not go on daylight savings time. Gilbert can be called between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Mountain Standard Time. He has been good about returning telephone calls if he is not able to answer them because he is working or with customers.

If you want some hard to get parts, now would be the time to contact him and see what is available. Entire cars are being taken to the crusher, sometimes ones which would be restorable.
