Hap, all

Yep that was me in the Elva....I'm 3rd guy with hat in "Rocker Ralph" photo posted earlier.

Not sure what was going on with Ralph's car... it seemed that issue was mainly #2 exh... broke that one twice, had another that looked suspect... over all he borrowed 4 rockers and 2 pushrods...

Don't know deal on springs and alum. seat....it was just what he had... didn't look at geometry or anything else, but wasn't coil bind...watched everything rollover last time...all looked decent... Sort of imagine it was a grabby guide...but didn't get that far at track...

He runs "stock" rockers, guess they are later ones, they had a web on top, that wasn't on the first ones I found him in my parts... those were "straight" on top, less meat than the ones he had...mine probably from early A engines...had to use a couple of crane pushrods to get adjuster "in range" with the flat top rockers...

First break happened on track, changed 2 that night, then same one broke (older rocker?) after another track session and run to town... just snapped when he got back to paddock...
found some more in my stuff with top/back rib and changed the two older ones we had installed earlier...

Whatever was going on, it didn't seem to do any damage, he didn't bend pushrods, and engine still had compression when back together....

As to my Elva and my HS rockers: seems to be sorted out on guides and roller rockers... best I can figure was it just was too tight on guides, in spite of what I had earlier theorized... now have 2-2 1/2 mils, 12 pt. nuts, and .032 belleville washers under those..

In the "vintage" race, had great start, good racing holding of the Racer Walsh Pinto, Guest's 1275, a Miata (vintage?) and a couple of 911's...til my brakes faded, got exciting a couple of places before I let folks by and slipped out of their way with a couple of laps to go... Started 35th oa, ran up to 23rd, and finished 28th, got lapped just in time to save another lap...

Ralph's first broke rocker drew a $20 bid at MGA forum/auction after the race... think money went to MGA tent rental... Got to MGA reunion "bull" session late, but it was very entertaining. Had several Aussies there, great weather, neat people, super event!

Ralph's son got some great video in his TC (twin cam not TC..dah..) during the race....

Finally, Dave and Laurel Godwin, from Australia, are going to drive their A coupe from Cape Town to northern Europe next Sept...(they've already done a walkabout in Africa and have driven it from China to London)........sounds like a trip some other "drivers" need to join...

Any chance his spring height is off? Maybe If Dave Headley looks at the pics he could tell. Possible spring bind?? Dave any thoughts? Hap??

That, or the seated pressures out of sight, the only ? for me looking at those pictures is what is the deal with those aluminum looking shims on the bottom of the valve springs.

Lord knows, my friend Dick May can break anything, and one time I saw him get into a bunch of trouble at the runoffs on his 948 trying to run a larger than stock OD valve spring that require the valve spring pad on the head to be enlarged for that valve spring, but the head he had, had not had the valve spring pads enlarged, he broke valve spring, wipe out roller rocker arms before I got over there to discover what he was doing wrong, it must have literally sent the valve spring seated pressures out the roof. So when I saw those aluminum looking deals at the base of Ralph's MGB valve springs, that kinda popped into my mind.

Here's the picture I'm talking about, I'm sure they are reason for this, but I still like to know what sort of seated pressure he has, and what deal is on the aluminum shims, I mean that valve spring would have to be way short/soft to need a shim that thick. In the end, it's hard to tell much looking at a picture.

If by any chance you are able to get any photos of this car in action on the track or in the pits, particularly by dark of night, that'd be awesome. Thanks much for sharing. If the opportunity presents itself, could you shoot and post a photo of the front of the red LMP1 number 18 car of Performance Tech Motorsports?
Don't go out of your way, but if it pops up in front of you that'd be terrific.
