Spridget Gearbox question

Is there any tricks on getting the third gear off the shaft? I know you're suppose to push in the spring and turn the clip. WHen I get the spring pushed in, I can't turned the retaining clip. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Did you use the new style output shaft ball bearing? If so, you have to make sure the supplied shims are installed in such a way as to make the inner race stand out exactly to the height of the forward face of the inner race of the old style bearing. I ended up using a good used old style bearing (NLA) and this fixed the 3rd gear engagement problem.

Did you ever reach a conclusion in your rebuild Darryl? My dad and I have been struggling with the same issue with 3rd popping out and after a couple of rebuilds have yet to solve the problem...

One thing we have noticed is that when 3rd is engaged, the shift lever doesn't seem/appear as far forward as when 1st is engaged. It does however seem/appear to engage just as far as 1st on a stock ribcase. Anyone else notice that or chime in on that?

Daryl
I'm going through the same thing this off season.
After two seasons of running a standard ribcase that I rebuilt myself all those hasty fourth to third changes accompnaied by loud grinding noises have taken their toll.
At the end of last season the popping out of third was becoming a little disconserting.
Please pass on any findings.
Also if anyone out there has a good used SC gear set I would be interested.
Good luck

Factory sraight cuts have no/little axial load, so nothing is pushing them in one direction or the other, any slop, they pop (out).... ball detents normally aren't the issue...those have to be really bad... it more, stuff that moves or giggles when rotating... helical gears provide a bit of thrust that keeps things together, where SC's don't.

What I almost always found to be cause of popping out of gear was axial clearance on the cluster stack up, or worn/bad synchro teeth on hub id....look at both mating parts, dress teeth with jeweler's files or dremel as needed...no burrs.. Do a good visual on stuff. Those thrust washers your sought, could be issue, as are shims in front of brg. on main shaft out...(between gear stack and brg...)

Also, make sure the pocket brg between first and 3rd motion shaft is good...including the shaft itself...often wear/brinell under brg, or inside first motion...

Use good stuff... the used gears, might be good or not....same with everything else. I had to buy new slider(s) from Leyland to fix my H car back in 78....

Some you just never figure out...
Not sure which box you're working with. MiniMania has the thrust washers for the 948 and 1098 boxes, not for the 1275 ribcase mixer...
