Hi,

Hopefully this is a very quick and simple question - what fuel hose and pipe diameters are used on the RV8? I'm particularly interested in the sizes used on the fuel filters and pump.

Since I'm installing a 3.9 EFI engine in a 1978 B, I figured I wanted to keep everything as common as possible with the RV8, for the sake of simplicity. I just need to go an source the relevant hoses and fitting for my new tank, and would like know what to order before I go and part with the cash.

Thanks,

Slave Cylinder Piston Popping Out On 302/T5 Conversion (15 replies)

Twice in the past 3 weeks I've been left stranded because my clutch pedal went to the floor and I found that the piston in the slave cylinder had popped out of the cylinder. I'm using the 84 Nissan truck slave cylinder with a stock MGB clutch master cylinder. The first time this happened, I put the piston back in and then adjusted the pushrod so that it was pushing the piston to the bottom of the cylinder and was very tight against the clutch fork so it didn't require much travel to disengage the clutch.

I'm using the Daze Cars T5 slave adapter bracket and pushrod. Pictured below (I just bought the kit without the CNC slave cylinder). Obviously the piston is being pushed too far but I can't figure why. The clutch is catching at the very top of the pedal. I barely push on the clutch pedal and the clutch disengages, so I figured the piston and pushrod wouldn't be traveling far. But I'm wrong. Just don't know why and what the fix is.

Hey Guys, some of you I am sure have seen my 61 Morris Build with a 95 Camaro 3.4 Fuel Injected Engine. I got everything finally hooked up to hear the engine run before I do final wiring, and wiring tuck. Here is a run down of the setup:

-1995 3.4 Fuel Injected Camaro Engine with 4l60e trans
-LP Pump feeding Bronco Fuel Accumulator then off to HP Pump
-Bosch 17lb/hr 17 lb 17lb/hr Design II fuel injectors (top feed injector, 190cc/min flow rate, high-impedance, EV-1 wiring harness connector)
-Stock Engine Harness, REFlashed PCM by Marc to increase top speed cutoff, security disabled.

For wiring I left everything stock, for the PCM I connected Orange to battery, 3 Pinks to ignition. Currently I have fuel pumps on ignition, but will rewire to use Camaro PCM fuel pump relay so HP pump will prime. Black and white wires grounded. Once I figured those out, coils are hot, I'm reading 12+V at pink/black wires on Injectors. I have the correct fuel pressure at the rail. Now if I spray starter fluid in the intake it will run off that, then die. The injectors are BRAND NEW. I don't think the injectors are opening up/pulsing. Am I missing something in the wiring? How to test if injectors are pulsing. I pulled the rail before putting new injectors in and nothing sprayed out. Even though I have the disable flashed into the PCM, do I still need to ground a wire, or connect a wire (BLUE?).

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it, I know I am so close, but I am really stumped on this one. I know it is probably something simple...

Hi everyone,

I've got a couple of questions, hopefully fairly simple ones...

Firstly, I'm installing a 100% stock EFI Range Rover V8, which means I've got the taller breather canister and oil filler neck, both of which are positioned towards the front of the engine. I've looked at picture of RV8 engine bays, and I'm now concerned that these will foul the underside of the bonnet, even on an RV8 replica design with the central bulge. This concern arises simply because the breather (once the hose is fitted) and oil filler aren't much lower than plenum itself, but are considerable further forward.

Does anyone have any experience with this? One alternative might be to use an MGC bonnet instead, since the "raised" portion extends that much further forward - again, does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

All:

Not sure is this is completely the correct forum, but I can see there is a wealth of knowledge here...I love reading through the project logs!

So I have a project car in mind - something starting with a rough TD, probably one missing the engine/tranny and swapping in the running gear from a clapped out MGB. Done right, I would have an around-town daily driver that I wouldn't have to worry about too much, no obsessing over matching SNs, (or chipped paint) but it would still be "all MG", with more power, and maybe more other stuff.

I just found a running '76 MGB on craigslist. He already has a Weber downdraft conversion and claims the clutch is new. The body is pretty rough and the interior is a wreck, so no heartache over pulling as much running gear out of this as possible.

My question to the collective wisdom of the forum - how much MGB can I successfully tack onto a TD chassis? I can do some fabrication, and have access to some experts to help with the extra hard bits.

So, what fits:
-engine?
-tranny?
-front end?
-rear end?

Also, anything particular to this later "emissionized and safety-ed" car I need to know about for this?

Thanks for any guidance.
I have the dimensions for the 350, but cant get accurate measurements of my MG without taking the motor that's in it completely out. HELP!!! Also, has anyone else undertaken a project of this magnitude? As always, all advice is greatly appreciated and accepted smiling smileysmiling smiley.

I got offered a BHH998 oil pump base from an original MGB V8 that had apparently only covered 45,000 miles. When I received it I was concerned by the pretty deep circular scoring from the oil pump gears. Speaking to the guy I got it from he says he's seen ones that are far worse but to my mind, scoring shouldn't be present, what are your thoughts?

On that note he's offered me a flo-tech replacement from an MGR V8, is there any pros or cons to using one of these? Please be honest, because if there is any doubt i'm happy to buy a brand new one.

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum. I purchased my 1979 MGB around September of last year with the intention of restoring it and swapping a 2.0L DOHC Zetec into it. My father (known as Mustangsix on this forum) has been kind enough to help me with this project. I started a build thread on focusfanatics.com.

This project has been a good father/son project and has been a lot of fun so far. The swap isn't complete yet and we still have a lot of little hurdles to overcome. I just figured some of you may like it. I'll keep this thread updated as the swap nears completion.

Maybe this has been covered, BUT, the reason I bought my GT project was so I could swap in a Rover 3.5L V8. Being the eccentric MG enthusiast that I am, I want my MGB GT V8 to be as close to the originals as possible. Hence why I want a carburated 3.5L and not an EFI 3.9L or 4.2L engine. Sick. Now if I could only find some MG V8 valve covers... anyways...

So I found a guy that is pulling a 3.5L out of a 1985 Rover Defender 110 and the engine is his daily driver, but he is swapping up to a fuel-injected 4.2L, so he'll be selling the old engine. My main question is, is this engine late enough that the accessory mounting will cause problems in a swap, or does it follow the same mounting pattern as the earlier 3.5L engines?

Given the extremely limited pool of potential local engines for swaps (yay Alaska), I think I've struck gold - but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance for the help...

I don't want to go too high,(don't really want to have to use premium fuel if I don't have to). I'm planning on using the factory 14cux EFI. Would raising the CR have any negative effects on the way the EFI operates?
As I think about an engine swap, I wonder about the California smog law. Doesn't it say you must pass the emissions test for the year of the engine you install?

With the CHP using the roving "Safety Check" stops, what happens there? If you have a v6 from a 1987 car, do you have to meet those mandates?

I have seen 2 of these CHP stops set up in the last 6 months. They put you on a trailer with a Dyno, and do the same tests as you'd do if it was a 2 year test on a 1976 and later car. Or so I'm told at the NAPA store where I was when I saw the last CHP stop, just outside in the street.

Has any one experienced this yet?
I´m swapping to an RV8 with hotwire EFI - from what I can gather the hotwire ECU does store a small fuel map in its memory which will get lost if the battery is disconnected from the ECU permanent 12V supply. Has anyone used a cut off switch on a hotwire efi system and has this caused any noticable dramas on cold startup? I can run a small fused feed directly to the ECU permanent 12V supply but this kind of defeats the purpose of a battery cut off switch.

I found this while looking for V6 info. I've fought bleeding the HTOB for awhile now and found force feeding it through the bleeder to be a good way to get it primed but it isn't 100%. I'm going to try this tonight since its a one person ops.

Use a hand Vacuum pump (these can be picked up for cheap at most auto parts stores or Sears). http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00999499000P
If you've never used a hand vacuum pump, here's a little crash course- You'll take one hose from the pump to the overflow cup and another hose from the cup to whatever you're pulling the vacuum on. For this you'll need to put a cone-shaped attachment on the end of the hose. Also make sure the reservoir is sealed up well. Generally it's a two-piece design with a screw-on lid. Put a small layer of grease around the top of the cup then put the lid on. It sounds crazy, but I've found that dielectric grease works great for this.

Make sure your reservoir is filled with fluid (take the rubber insert out for this, if there is one there). Insert the end of the hose into the master cylinder reservoir and push the cone down into the hole in the bottom of it and hold it there. Begin pumping the vacuum pump and you'll see fluid and air bubbles beginning to work their way up the hose and towards the overflow cup on the vacuum pump. Pump until you see about 15-18in.Hg vacuum (do not exceed 20in.Hg, as it could damage the master cylinder). Hold it there for a minute then quickly pull the end of the hose out of the master cylinder reservoir. Make sure you pull it completely out of the fluid, because it will suck your reservoir dry if you leave it in there. Now make sure there's plenty of fluid in the reservoir then check your pedal. It'll most likely be on the floor. If not, usually one slight push on it will cause it to fall to the floor. By pulling it up you will suck the fluid in the reservoir down into the master and slave cylinder, so make sure it's full before pulling the pedal up.

Repeat this process until you don't see any more bubbles coming up when you pull the vacuum on the system. You may have to empty the overflow cup several times.

This is also a good way to check for a leak in the system. If you continually see bubbles or have trouble maintaining a vacuum, then you have a leak somewhere. Also keep in mind that a leak in the master cylinder may not actually leak fluid out. In fact it most likely won't. A faulty master cylinder usually causes problems by leaking fluid past it's plunger, but not necessarily leaking out of the cylinder itself. Putting a vacuum on a faulty master cylinder will often cause air to leak IN. If this happens then you'll see a see a constant stream of bubbles and you'll never be able to hold a vacuum. A leak in the slave cylinder on the other hand will usually leak fluid OUT.

Hope this helps.

I know this isn't an engine swap, but I am running Bill Guzman's (Classic Conversions) 4 link rear suspension, and I wondering if there could be any issues with the howling sound coming from the rear, and since my MGB is a resto-mod, I figured I could get some advice on this forumn

I've been running moss part here for a couple of years, but since I have had my hard top on the sound coming form my rear end is really loud - one thing about the hard top is sound resonates pretty loudly inside, the outside noise with the top down drowns out the sound so I really hadn't noticed it until driving to and from britfest.

Should an LSD be any louder then a stock rear end? When coasting it is quiet, when I apply power and accelerate the whine an howl is really loud. Could any of this be caused by the rear end not being dead nuts on square with the tracking -

Any comments about this would be greatly appreciated -

Gents,

In some other "old car" forums I've noticed sometimes there are "interchange" guides for using parts from other makes and models that are either:

1. Currently available (or more readily available locally) vs. "unobtainium"
2. Work better/ higher performance than original equipment or available repro's
3. More reliable than the junk repro's
4. Less expensive
5. All of the above

I started thinking about this when I went to price a new clutch master cylinder from the usual British parts vendors for the '76 Midget (about $100 with shipping) vs. my neighbor's '92 Honda clutch MC ($16.99 at Autozone). Since I plan on keeping this car forever, and I am not worried about originality but am worried about reliability, I have no qualms regarding using say, the door seal felts intended for a Chevy S-10 if it's 1/10th the cost of the OEM or British aftermarket stuff, or I can pick it up at NAPA or Advance Auto, as long is the swap is well engineered and executed (no "hold my beer and hand me the welder" engineering allowed).

So how about a forum for all the other swaps we do like seats, blower motors, windshield wipers, radiators, interior bits, etc?

We talk about swapping engines and entire drivelines (cool factor!) but there are lots of smaller projects that I am sure people are doing that are worth sharing. I'd like to hear of any parts swaps you've done for reliability.
One transmission is from a JDM Nissan Skyline and is expensive, but it looks narrow enough to fit in the tunnel. The other is a Chevy S10 transmission that comes with a 2.5L Iron Duke 4 cylinder engine still attached. The engine runs pretty good, too. What I need help with is determining how much work each installation would be.
Does anyone know the distance between the front of the bell housing to the shifter on a standard Midget 1500? That measurement will determine whether I have 95hp or 205hp under the hood.
I posted this in the Midget forum and was told I should ask here. I hope someone knows, so I don't have to figure out how to get underneath my Midget to measure.

Hi everyone,

Do I use a Rover SD1 clutch slave cylinder for the LT77 box I have? I also read that the ball pivot shaft needs to be a certain length for the V8, is this right?

Finally, what mounting rubbers do you use for the gearbox? I'll be modifying the gearbox crossmember as per the book.
This beast will hold a high speed line through the twisties like few I've driven before. However...my age and slower reflexes dictate my driving style has to change and I'm seriously considering changing to stock camber and same tire size front and rear.
Silencers for V8 Conversion - Suggestions? (21 replies)

Hi everyone,

I'm approaching the end of my V8 conversion project (well, I think I am!), and have found someone to make me a custom tank with a return line (I'm going the EFI route), and a custom dual exhaust system. He's a keen dragbike racer, and builds his own bikes, along with the occasional commission for work on cars (such as myself).

With that in mind, I'm looking to source a pair of silencers to be included in the exhaust system, preferably sourced from the UK, since that's where I'm based. I'm interested in sound quality rather than quantity - I want a nice burble at idle and a reasonably rich noise at full throttle, but I don't want to be deafened on a long motorway journey. Any suggestions on silencer types, and places to source them?

Thanks,

Thought it was time for me to chime in and give you guys & gals my MG story. I am sort of a newbie at least to the MG Experience. I have been following as many different topics as I could over the past 8 months to learn as much as I can BEFORE I tackle my MG project, a 1978 MGB barn find that I purchased in late August 2012 for $600 with a Parrish/Smoothline hardtop, 76,000 miles, never been hit, solid body, good chrome but has been off the road for 13 years.

By following the various postings I have now accumulated 53 pages of solid info and think I am ready to tackle the project. Last September I took the car apart and bagged every piece in plastic bags with labels so I do not have a jig saw puzzle when I start putting it back together.

Over the winter my buddy’s body shop has been doing all of the body work so that beginning mid-May I can start all of the mechanical work. The intent is to build a fun street car that looks like a race car, with good handling and enough pep to keep up with modern traffic and if necessary to get out of trouble using the go pedal.

My plan is as follows: Rebuild the front suspension with shorter springs and poly bushings and rebuilt original shocks in order to drop the front about 1 ½ inches. In the rear use reverse eye springs & stock rebuilt shocks to also drop the rear about the same amount.

Drop in a Chevy 3.4 V6 with a Ford T5 (2.95 first & .63 5th gears), V6 bellhousing, htob, custom driveshaft & use the stock MG 3.9 rear end. New wiring for the ignition system and old school for the fuel - 390 Holly, distributor and a 12 gallon fuel cell in the trunk. I am too old to figure out how to make EFI work.

Totally rebuild and upgrade the brake system. Gotta go but also gotta stop.

Get rid of the RB in the front & use a Sebring valence. I am still debating about the rear. I like the look of the fiberglass valence and would buy a Tony Jennes rear valence but it looks as if he is only going to make them for the GTs. The fiberglass ones look as if they are a real pain to fit. Will Tony’s GT valence fit my MGB?

The interior is in very good condition except for the rugs that will be replaced.

Obviously there are going to be lots & lots of little things that I have not mentioned but my goal is to have a running auto by the end of the summer.

All comments and advice will be gratefully accepted. You can see a pic of the car as purchased on my home page .

I had planned on starting last fall but things got out of control and I just now have thing back in line. My question is should plan on just opening it up and looking around inside and if so what should I look for? The input shaft has a little play but it seems to shift very well setting on the cart in my garage/shop but I know that's different than being bolted to my Rover 3.9L V8. If I need to do a rebuilt on it, is this something I could do myself because I have not done any tranmission work before, are farm it out? If I let someone do it for me what is a fair price and if I do it my self where is the best place to pick-up a rebuild kit? As always thanks for the help because lord knows I going to need it.

I'm thinking about doing an axle swap in my MGA, which would give make a lot of new gear ratios available. Anyway, according to Wikipedia, the stock rear ratio was 4.363 and about 3.9 in Europe. My car has a 4.1 rear end. At max 10 PSI boost and a t28 turbo it's a bit slow until I hit about 4,000 RPM, and then it blasts off.

I've been thinking about putting a 4.3 or even a 4.56 rear end and seeing what happens. Any thoughts?

I think my car is geared too high for a small engine that gets it's power at RPM. At 70 mph I'm at 3350 RPM. I usually downshift when I pass on the highway in order to get into boost. I almost never use 4th gear when accelerating fast.

I'd like to hear what other people think about the gear ratios they're running.

Thanks

I need to use a pressure type pre lube system to make sure all parts are lubricated prior to starting my engine that has been sitting for several years since being rebuilt. This type of oiler is necessary because the LT1 Chevy engine does not have a conventional distributor that can be removed and a drill powered pre oiler used.

I had to get my MIG gas bottle refilled this week and while I was there I asked the guys in back if they had any small gas bottles that they could not refill but that would still hold 100 psi. He came up with a small oxygen bottle that he said I could have. I cut a 2" hole in the bottom with a hole saw and welded in half of a 2" pipe coupler. The 2" plug was drilled and tapped with a 1/4" npt thread and I attached an air fitting with a 90* elbow. The small end already had a 3/4" npt thread where the valve used to be. The 1" aluminum block is drilled and tapped for a 3/4"-16 (fine thread) which is the same thread as a PH16 oil filter has. I drilled a 5/16" hole through the axis of the bolt and turned the smooth shank end down and cut a 3/8" npt male thread on it so I could attach the ball valve. The tank attaches to the top of the block with a 3/8" pipe nipple and 2 reducer bushings. A passage is drilled down to intersect with another hole drilled into the area inside the I.D. of the filter gasket. The pressurized oil will go into the outside of the filter, through the filter media, out through the hole in the bolt and then to the engine. I wanted to use a filter in case any dirt was left inside the tank although I cleaned it really well. The only two things I had to buy were the 2" pipe plug and the oil filter - less than $10. I had everything else laying around.

The way it will work is a hose will be connected from the ball valve to the port where the oil pressure sender screws into the block. with the ball valve closed I can fill the tank with 2-3 quarts of oil and then screw the 2" plug in place to make it airtight. I will then attach shop air to the fitting (regulated to 50-60 psi) and then open the ball valve. The oil will fill all the galleries in the engine and pre lube all the parts.

Its time to get a starter for my conversion. I've been doing a little research and I've established this:

Range/Land Rover starters: Look ideal as they are nice and short, but it appears the solenoid comes out of the side/top and so hits the MGB chassis

Rover SD1: Solenoid position comes out of the bottom so no clearance issues, but its long and is close to the manifolds

MGB V8 original: Slightly shorter than the SD1 starter but rarer and expensive.

Hi-Torque: The best option, but expensive. Looking at this page, they say their £132 starter might fit MGB conversions and is much better priced than the proper MGB V8 version, thoughts?

Hi:

I have a 3.1 liter v6 with a t-5 transmission. On this setup the transmission is set an angle relative to plane of the engine oil pan. I believe I've read it is 17 degrees. The fill plug for the transmission oil is thus high in the tunnel and angled away. I was wondering how people change transmission lubricant. I filled the transmission after the rebuild and before installation and haven't had to change it yet.

Can you get the fill plug out with this setup? Can you get a suction pump tube in there to refill? Would it be better to cut an access hole in the tunnel so you could get to the fill plug the way my 1966 MGBGT had an interior access port/dipstick?

Just wondering.

thanks

Some more questions for my conversion :)

Starter motor:

I need a starter motor before I fit the engine to the car and am unsure what to get. I don't want a standard one as I know they sit close to the manifold and can suffer from overheating. I've seen two other options; a hi-torque compact starter (expensive) or what looks to be a short body standard starter (that would give more exhaust clearance).

So from people's experience what is best to get?

2. Where is best in the UK to get the rubber engine to body mounts?

3. Just out of curiosity, is a V8 with LT77 box and a 3.9:1 final drive useable at all?

Many thanks

I was asked off line about tire sizes and gear ratios and had to sit down an calculate what I am running.

I have 215x60-15 tires on 6" wire wheels. They do 802 revs per mile.

The most popular replacement MGB tire seems to be 175x70-14 which is 853 revs per mile.

Not sure how this matches with stock MGB gearing, but here is what the cars are doing in 4th:

MGB 4000 rpm = 72 mph
4500 rpm = 81 mph

Both of those are comfortable cruising speeds.

The Jamaican with 15" tires:

4000 rpm = 76 mph
4500 rpm = 86 mph

I've been asked if the 3.9 diff doesn't result in too low gearing. The answer is no, not if you run a 15" tire. and if I want to cruise higher in speed, the 5th gear is a long OD ratio.

In 5th gear I can do the 76 mph at 2500 rpm.

You'll get approximately the same results using slightly narrower tires if the rear fender well room limits you on an MGB. A 195x65-15 is only a couple of percent off.

The pay off in keeping the 3.9 diff is considerably enhanced acceleration over the lower numerical ratios.

I live in Corpus Christi and do not know of any shop here that would or that I would trust do a swab.

Is there anyone on the forum that knows of a excellent shop in my area or around the Houston area that I could contact about doing a complete turnkey swab and do a first class trustworthy job.
I installed a ford/Mazda klde engine and i am adapting the upper arm to the spindle so i need to put a taper into the ford spindle so everything bolts up. Several options have come up one was to heat up the top to red orange and press the ball joint into the hot metal. The other is to just ream the hole to size. I noticed that the steering rod end the taper is the same as the ford so no problem there but this is for the larger upper ball joint. it is larger. so far i have found out that the 7 degree and the 1.5" reamers are the same. also 10 degree and 2" are the same. but what i really need to know is the taper for the 1800 1.5 or 2 or something else.

Looking in my area of the north it is hard to find a vehicle this old.

I am having a junkyard search for the rear for me and need to get them the right info. Doing a Car-parts search has the closest one 400 miles away.

The options that show up are 9" or 10" brakes. Does it matter? Keeping the stock MC, is the volume of the 10" brakes larger then the 9"?

Also can I utilize a rear with ABS? Or can I work around the ABS.

I am looking for the 3.45 gears since I am using a V6 trans out of a 94 Camaro. Would the 3.73 gears be too close to the 3.9 to make it worth the cost?

Are they all Limited-slip or do I have to check for it...

Ok last question. Since I can not locate one to look at which side is the short side that I need the extra axle from.
Thanks for any help in advance.
