Hello, everybody!

My name is Chris, and I hail from the Mayberry-esque town of Salem, Virginia. I am now the proud week-long (or so) owner of a 1976 Midget with 69K original miles on it.

It's in pretty rough shape, but I'm looking forward to getting it back on the road properly.

Some pictures of what I have in store:

As you can see, I have my work cut out for me. The parts yard I purchased it from had a bypass wired onto the battery to prevent it from being started and once I removed that the fan started up immediately . . .

. . . for about as long as it took me to turn the key. :S

Then I heard a click from the engine bay and that was that. No more clicks from the starter or anywhere else. Thinking the battery was dead, I hooked my jumper cables up to my van and attempted to start it. Again, the fan turned on long enough for me to turn the key and then nothing.

The interior is in rough shape, but I'm not as concerned with that as I am with getting the motor running. I saw right off that there is a cable coming from the back of the carburetor that has been snipped. I'm guessing that it was the choke cable at one time, but I can't be sure. That and the small fuse panel on the passenger side of the firewall is missing a fuse. It is missing a couple of hoses from what appears to be the gulp valve as well as from the washer fluid reservoir, too. Fun times are ahead, Im sure.

I'll say this: I am also the prior owner of a 1979 Fiat X 1/9, and that was a lot of fun, too. So I know that I'm in for a lot of both frustration and elation. This is obviously a totally different animal, though, and I'm looking forward to playing around with this one as well.

So . . . all that being said . . . if you folks were me, what would you tackle first?

Oh, and thanks for having me. :)-D

Valve issues?

I did a compression test and I'm low in cylinder 1 (85/115/120/125). Adding oil didn't change the reading, so I'm suspecting valve issues. I did recently attempt to adjust the valve clearances for the first time, I may have screwed something up. I found it very hard to determine fully up/closed on them. My engine has always been fairly click/clacking from the valve cover, I thought this was normal but now I'm suspecting sticking valves. Hopefully not a burned valve. I'd rather not remove the head to check, so I'm wondering if anyone knows some good (easy/cheap) ways to determine if a valve is stuck or is it shot?

I've found this stuff called Marvel Mystery Oil online, does anyone attest to it?

Thanks in advance!

So i found this article online; http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=560117
and previously, when I bought my MG, the previous owner gave me some spare parts, some of which were two sets of two carbs. theyre both kinda grimy, and I wanted to clean it, but I of course am on a budget. I picked the pair that were not complete, my other set is pretty complete, its just missing some things, but I didnt want to ruin them just in case..

I found the article and its said that PineSol can clean your carbs without damaging any rubber or delicate parts. So of course I went out and bought a 100 Fluid Ounce bottle of it, thinking that would be pleanty.

I put the carbs into a one gallon icecream bucket, and poured in the PinSol. In the article before, he added some water. But I didnt see that, so I just did PinSol.

Results will follow tomorrow hopefully!

The PinSol I bought was just $7 so that was cheap, and wasnt too bad. But hopefully itll be better than a $7 clean job!

Hey Guys,

Finally a Midget has come up locally for sale, a '78 with 38,000 miles, kept in a garage, but from the pics you can tell it has some rust...I am willing to live /deal with that, but it has not been started in 9 months, and has what has been described as a "sticking" clutch that was improved slightly by replacing the slave cylinder...he is asking $1500. I would like to use this to go back & forth to work in most conditions (no snow or heavy rain).

Just kind of looking for thoughts/feed back, etc. Willing to work on it to a certain extent...I am not a great mechanic, nor do I have the greatest place to work on it, but I really want something non-computerized/no power windows/basic/simple, etc.

Sorry for the rambling,

Thanks,

Hey guys.

Thanks to help from a lot of people here, my car is almost on the road. The one thing that is holding me up is timing. I have a 1275 midget with new weber downdraft carb. Couple questions:

1. What degree is optimal for the dissy to be set at ?

2. Are there degree marks in the car or do i need something to measure the degrees.

3. Regarding the timing light. The one i have has pos/neg battery hook ups. Since the car is neg ground, do i hook pos to pos or pos to neg on the battery?

Thanks for any insight.
This morning, my car turned over right away, but would not hold an Idle. It just stalls when you take your foot off the gas.
I though it was cold and ran out 27 miles to work. Runs fine at speed. Every time I let go of the gas... nothing.

I got to the office parked for a few hours and tried again. Same thing.
I checked the carb and the dashpot was a bit low; topped it up. Same thing.
I turned the idler screw up 1.5 turns. it started and idled. a short drive later, same thing.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

Since this is 200 miles after my engine rebuild, I am suspecting that I need to re-tighten the manifold and anything else that has come loose... Could it be a vacuum leak? :S

Suggestions welcome?
Wish me luck getting home.

Cylinders 1 and 4 seem to be running the proper mixture. However, cylinders 2 and 3 are both heavily carboned up on the plugs. Car runs OK, but terrible mileage (about 23 mpg). Also, black carbon from the exhaust. Any ideas out there from someone with the 32/36 DGV Weber conversion on a 1500 Midget? I have not tried to rejet it yet.

Hey all,
The arm for the turn signal has a little rattle at the tip, basically sounds like something is loose.
Do I have to replace the whole switch or is there an easy way to pop of the end of the arm?
If I had to explain the sound I hear I would say its equivalent to a washer loose in the tip of the arm. If I hold the arm the rattling disappears.

Do I have to replace the whole arm?
Thanks,

I tried to start my 1500 engine after bottom end berrings were replaced and only cylinders 3&4 were firing. It did have what looked to be a new cam and I think it is a performence cam because original scribe marks were scrached out and new ones made. I did line up the crank mark to the new line and made sure it was on compression stroke. I did check for spark and has spark. I used an old intake gasket which have changed to a new one in case that was the problem and I will try to start it later today but do not think that is the problem. after I try again if no change I will re take the compression again. I do not know what cam is in it so could not use a cam timer. I built a neat engine test stand and will try to get pitchers later to day. In the mean time if any one has any insight as to why this would happen help will be greatly apresheated. (sorry about the spelling)

I was wondering from those that are in the know... what is the difference between the HIF 4 and the HS4 carburetors? I am deciding what carb. to go with in my new rebuild. I have a rebuilt 1500 ready to go in my car when I get finished painting it (the car I mean). I am running a Weber in my present car and I like it but I've heard others that really like the dual HS4 setup they ran on the 1500 in the UK version.

I am most interested in performance capabilities, ease of setup, and ease/frequency of adjustment rather than looks or keeping it British, etc. It might also help to know that I am rebuilding a 1978 with the later rear gear ratio and the Spitfire OD transmission. It might help to know how hard it is to find intake manifolds to fit. I know that the HS4 has a manifold for the 1500 that will bolt right up. What say you?

Hello all, after close inspection of the rear fenders, I noticed that the right one was full of dry mud. Looking from the inside of the boot, I could see a lot of mud inside. Who can all that mud had got inside???

I used a long screwdriver to scratch all the mud, and then a vacuum with a small diameter plastic tube attached to it, to remove all the mud. Now it looks much better but I will need to make a second session.

Outside, on the inner side of the rear fender, I discovered a small hole about 8mm in dia, that acts like a drain hole, although its not on the lowest part of the fender.

I am not sure what i should do to tacked this. I have no piece of mind leaving that metal as it is. But there is no space to work, both metal parts are only 2cm apart, and no power tool can be used inside.

I was thinking, more sessions with a flexible metal trip to scratch all the metal surface and remove mud and rust. Then treat surface with metal ready, fitting a plug on the drain hole and flooding all inside of the fender so the acid works. Rinse, and once dry, with a long paint brush well soaked with por15, cover all the inside to encapsulate the metal.

Any other ideas??

Did some tinkering to pass emissions, and thought she was running good but now she won't start! Looking for some help on what I should be looking for.

What I ended up doing for emissions was adjusting the timing, swapping to a leaner idle jet, and screwing in the mixture screw (Weber). When I got back home, I installed the original jet and enriched up the mixture screw. It had a very nice sound, I thought I had it dialed in. But later in the day I went to start it and nothing. I mean, it turns over and seems like it wants to start but it won't. Checked the choke and it's closing the choke plates as it should. I replaced the spark plugs and they are getting wet with gasoline. I pulled one to verify spark and got spark. I have fuel in the bowl, and if I'm getting gas to the plugs then I shouldn't have a fuel problem I would think.

I'm thinking I had the mixture screw out too much, which is causing a flooding type condition. Since that is more or less the main thing I have tinkered with.

Thanks in advance!

So I thought I would swap sides and refresh the bushings.
That is until I found out what the PO had done.
when I put the springs next to each other to see if there was a differance... WOW
Almost two inches in height!
My car is a *68 CB car and I found yellow pencil that says 79 Midget(RB)on the taller spring.
I know the Rubber bumper cars had a higher spring rate, hence the taller arch.

I have a set off of a *65, but their spring rate is 5lbs less and a little over 1/4" less in height.
I think this would give a softer and lower ride.

So my question is should I replace the one to make a match or should I use the older set or look for a used matched pair or buy new??
First of all thanks for all of the helpful information ! I am rebuilding my Zenith carb, and with the rebuild kit I am going to order a grose jet, which is advertised by moss as an improvement over the regular needle set. Has anybody had any experience with this ? Is it an upgrade or not ? Thanks

Hello, I am new to this forum, so I apologize if this topic has alrady been addressed. I have a '75 Midget. I took my Midget in for an oil change yesteray. When I went to start it up, it cranked, but did not start. None of the electric came on either, includng the fuel pump. Finally after staring at the engine, we closed the hood and it started up like always. Pressing my luck, I turned off the car and opened the hood. Again, it started up. The fuel pump works, the radio works, but the brake lights and turn signals now do not work.

I have replaced a fuse. I checked for crimped wires. I reconnected wires. Everything was find when I pulled in for an oil change. Now I have a giant paperweight. Any insight is appreciated.

Update - I just went out to start staring at it again and now it won't start. It cranks, but nothing. On the plus side, the cabin fan is now working.

The clutch works great, but when driving, and you shift into 3rd gear, after a bit the clutch will kick out. It then is in neutral, but if you hold the stick shift in third gear, then it drives fine. Theres no grinding, or odd noises when it drives in third, or any other gear.

Could it just be a release bearing, and how easy is that to fix?
Or could it be something else that I didnt think of?
The half on the seat frame and the half on the floor?
Also the other seat I have has only brackets to bolt it down, no adjustable passenger seat? That sound right?
I'm replacing the previously missing hot air hose in my 1976 Midget, and although the Haynes manual is usually pretty good, it doesn't tell me what I need to know -- the drawings show the hose feeding into the temp regulator valve, but it doesn't show where the other end connects.

Without the hose connected, the car has a constant rattle, and I'm sure it's not drawing in the air it's supposed to pull.
It doesn't go up as high as a lift, but gives you plenty of room to work under the car, or to pull wheels for suspension/brake work. Unfortunately, it costs about as much as a regular lift. But, I'm intrigued. Does anyone have one or have any experience with it?

73 Midget - not starting

Hi,
I'm new to MGs. I just bought a 73 Midget. PO said it was driven infrequently, but had started recently. After a jump, it started right up. It ran for a bit...we drove it around the block a few times and, feeling confident, took it for a longer drive. After about 3-3.5 miles, the car cut out and would not start again.

After troubleshooting some of the electrical basics (new battery, clean battery terminals, check for shorts, check for spark, check the sparkplugs, check the dizzy/dizzy cap, check the timing...) we found that there was no fuel in the float bowls.

We checked the fuel lines and replaced some of the rubber tubing and still not starting.

The fuel pump looks new and PO said it was replaced within the last few years. With the key in first position, it was clicking continuously. After a few attempts at starting, the clicking seemed to stop but instead it was VERY VERY quiet.

My boyfriend and I are pretty handy. We have done a lot of work to my Volvo 850, so we have some experience.

This forum has been tremendously helpful so far in diagnosing the issue, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Today while starting the car, it sounds like the starter solenoid only made noise and wouldn't crank the engine to start. I thought it was low battery so I switched the battery from my daily driver and it still only made noise. The one time I did get it to start the engine spluttered for a few seconds and died with a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Could this be something to do with the starter solenoid?

Howdy Gents!

I have a semi interesting question I was not able to answer after some research and was curious if anyone had any ideas on this.

Last week while doing the brakes on my 1970 midget I came to find out the Master Cylinder was bad. So I took it to a local MG repair shop that is known for some good work and very reasonable prices. And since I didn't want to spend anymore time messing with the car I had them take care of it.

When I went to pick up the car I noticed it fired right up, like crazy awesome fired right up. Almost felt like maybe half a key turn and it was fired up and running. I saw this surprisingly because it had been running a bit rough after a long trip we took. So I was super pleased with that. I had asked if they had done anything and they said they had not. (Its a small two man shop). So happy I head home and am able to stop on a dime! Double bonus!

When I got him I went to clean something off of the dash and noticed that when I pulled the choke cable, there was sbout a half in of slack that was not there when I dropped it off. I know this because I adjusted the choke cable a week prior and it was nice and really tight. Coming home I seemed to notice that the car appeared to be running a little rich, and the idle speed was around 2k, and previously it was sround 1500 RPM (I had just replaced some vacuum hoses and have been watching the idle speed. And to add to it, the car appeared to be using gas a tad faster than previously. All in my head I thought.

After a few more days of driving I notice that the car is a bit hesitant in second gear and a bit in 3rd and a tad rough in the beginning of 4th until I give it some more gas.

This morning I popped the hood and took a look around inside. I noticed that under the air filters it appeared to be a tad damp on the shield under them. ( I can post a photo if needed ) but I do not see a place that it may be leaking from or dripping from as I thought I may see. I did notice that some of the soft fuel lines there are getting dry rotted and cracked and intend on replacing them.

Any ideas on what may be causing this? I have a hunch that they may have pulled a bit hard on the choke cable since there is now some slack in it, maybe even pulled it out and had to put it back in. Maybe bumped an old fuel line? I am not sure how to chalk up the starting awesome now (Before it would take 3-4 tries turning it over then fire right now. Now it fires right up and runs a bit rough when driving.

Any help here would be awesome :)

Thanks!

The Haynes Manual shows these pictures for the timing on a 1275. There appears to be 3 different styles; 3,5 and 6 prongs. My car has the five prong style, but my car is also a 74, which I assume would be a later A-series engine. I don't know the history of my engine, if it's original to the car or not, but shouldn't it be a six prong timing mark?
Anyways, I assume I should use the picture in the middle right, with the five prong style to set my timing. Right?

Well...it's begun. After the compression test the head displayed what I would have considered to be a bad valve. I took the head off after much gnashing of teeth and took it to the local specialists. They inspected the seats and said that they were 'ok' but not great.....so instead of a full rebuild of the head they cleaned it up a lot, lapped the seats and put it back together. They also did a pressure test on the actual head itself to check for cracks and it passed with flying colors.

I also had them rebuild the webber carb for me as they have a good soaking tank to get rid of the old varnish that once was gasoline.

Some photos for your enjoyment. Nice to have new looking parts. NOW I have to clean up the rest of the engine so I can install these nice new parts!! Motivated once again! First head shot was the before then the after....

Also have reset the timing, per John Twist (E-Mail), and adjusted the valves. And rebuilt the carb, which I resurfaced all the surfaces flat, plus rebuilt the carbon cannisters. But I only still get 22 mpg, as was what I was getting before doing all of that.
I am thinking of switching to a different carb. from the Stromberg, but don't want to go to a Weber. Am thinking about a Mikuni or a Keihin (this one is more for street use, so I,ve read). But if they are not going to better my MPG, why switch?
I had not yet left my town when I stalled.
I checked under the hood and found that the carburetor was not getting fuel.
Last weekend I had added a fuse to the electronic fuel pump circuit and one of the connections I had made was broken. I will recheck the entire system tonight.
Boiled out and relined the tank, new fuel pump, etc, etc. It runs like a top, but... If I make a few errand stops or run it for more than 30 min, I start to see the temp gauge hitting the 3/4 mark and I know I'm in trouble. It just dies as if the fuel has been cut off. I used to live in Palm Springs and I remember someone suggested wooden clothes pins along the fuel line between the pump and carb. It acts as a heat sink and did the job if I remember correctly. Any thoughts on that one?

I have solved the ignition problems and am now moving onto the carburetors. In taking apart the carburetors to clean I noticed that the tags on each carburetor designating the type of flow needle in each have been reversed. I assume the designation 549F and 549R on each tag refer to front and rear with front being the front of the car. At some point in their life the tags were reversed. Is there any way to check the needles themselves to validate? In looking a 74 Midget up in the SU manual I see there should be the labeling of ABC on them, which I see for both, but nothing to distinguish front from back. Would they be the same? In all the parts catalogs I see there are separate numbers for each so I would think that would imply different needles. Anyone have an idea?

Hey guys,

Still trying to figure out my vibration at 60mph. Has anyone had vibration caused purely because their stock steel wheels were balanced via the center hole, vs the lug holes?

I've read that our stock steel wheels were stamped and sometimes the hub holes weren't perfectly on-center. If this were true, theoretically, balancing the wheel based on the hub hole would put the wheel off-balance once mounted on the car.

Thoughts?

Hi All,

Re-introducing myself as the proud owner of a '74 Midget resto. I basically forgot about this forum since I hang out on the Eastern OSHIT list. Richard Boris (MGB forum) reminded me of what a great resource this forum can be.

Under another thread, I published the car as a 73 with stuck pistons, and 'what the heck do I do now?'

Noob.

About a year later and much help from a couple MG car club members, I've got a passable workshop in the garage.
The engine's been bored to 1380, and together we did the re-assembly:
performance head gasket
Elgin Fast street cam
header
Brakes are done
new rotors/ bearings
New suspension bushings and the like
Gas tank has been serviced, new sending unit (which I'm not convinced actually works)
Radiator serviced
New oil lines/ hoses etc.
New e-brake

Re-conditioned H2s
Blasted/ painted the rostyles (just silver...sorry)
New tires.

New foam in drivers seat (passenger seat was the main course at a raccoon luncheon)
Windshield is fogging in the corners due to de-lamination. Not sure if it will pass inspection.

Right now I'm prepping the engine bay so we can bring the engine home. Of course we'll put in a new clutch/ T.O. bearing and replace the front tranny seal.

Hoping to drive it soon, and make it pretty later. Going to pay some dues and upload some pics

See ya

Help with installing HS4 Carbs

I'm attempting to install SU HS4 carbs and manifold on my '79 Midget 1500 and have run into some difficulties. I hope others who have successfully done the conversion can help me out.
1. The intake manifold has a coolant pipe that runs through it. The end toward the back of the car ends in a "T". I know one side connects to the heater valve (as with the original ZS manifold). What is the other side connected to?
2. There is room in front of the front carb for the coolant expansion tank to fit on its original mounting bracket, in its original position (just barely, but it fits), but I can't see how I can also accomodate the K&V air filters I was planning on buying. For that matter, I don't think there is enough clearance for ANY air filters (see attached picture). I slotted the holes in the expansion tank mounting bracket and was able to shift the tank forward about 1/4", but then it bumps up against the upper radiator hose. The Moss Europe catalog shows a completely different expansion tank setup for the Euro-Midgets, so that's no help. I read one blog by a guy who did the conversion and his pictures show the expansion tank between the end of the radiator and the right front fender. At least in my car, there is no room there for the tank plus its mounting bracket. How have others overcome this issue?
3. In a related vein, "plumbing" the fuel supply lines is a bit of a dilemma. I have the mechanical fuel pump, so fuel is supplied from the left rear of the engine, around the back of the engine, and to the rear carb. From there, it's impossible to feed into the front carb in the traditional manner, again due to the expansion tank blocking the way. I did some creative fuel line routing, but it just doesn't seem right to me.
Any advice, especially some closeup pictures of your successful HS4 installations would be most appreciated.

Hi Lucas Gurus,

I am without a car because of an "upgrade" I decided to install. I decided to put in a 12V cigarette lighter (charger station) and wired it across the + terminal of the starter solenoid and battery earth (gel cell-high cold cranking amps) and, duh, the wiring (18AWG) of the lighter melted. I immediately pulled it, removed all the damaged wiring, but the car won't turn over. How do I check what in the ignition system is now failing? All the wiring looks sound to the new starter and 1-wire alternator, but when I turn the key I get nothing.

Some upgrade, huh?!

Thanks for any wiring troubleshooting ideas on this one.

Clay; 1965 Midget, 1098cc, new starter solenoid (was working fine); one-wire alternator (also was working fine), and hi-torque starter from Moss (also was working fine).

1977 midget. I have had my new top on for 2 years (Looks Amazing!) minus 1 thing. The little straps of vinyl one pair on each side that snap around the tops frame. I have no idea what tool I would be looking for adding the snaps. Anybody have a photo of one or what type of store would have one. Remember I am in MT here. No specialty shops.

On another note has anyone heard when the Southwest MT MG group will be doing its ride to Yellowstone park this year?? From Bozeman to the park that is. (No web page or info on them) I am new to MT but I heard last years was a great cruise from a local TC owner. The trailing fix it truck only had to repair 2 cars. :)

So im looking at this midget, I believe its a 71, or 72.. Unfortunately I dont have too many pictures but from what I been told, it may need a new 3rd gear eventually.

But from the pictures, is there anything that raises any red flags? To me, It looks really good.

Thanks

I recently bled the brakes on my '74, and after having help the second time was a charm. That being said, after getting a good firm pedal & no warning light, I let the car sit for a few hours in the garage while I played with my 5 month old. Came back to the garage and the red light was just as brite as could be. Still had good firm pedal though. Went ahead & did a test drive; soft stops and hard stops...all was well, but the light was still on until I backed into my garage and it went off. No light this morning on my way to work, but I checked on my lunch break and it was on again after sitting a few hours. I can't see any leaks, and the pedal still feels great...what gives!?

On a possibly related note; when bleeding, the fluid coming out was somewhat gunky. Time to flush the entire system?

Ideas anyone? Many thanks in advance!

I have a 78 and 79 Midget that I am restoring.
I bought a rebuild carb for the 78, it worked great at first, but now the fuel pump never shuts off. Fuel drips out the side where the air intake is.
I took the carb off the 79 and put in on the 78, and it does the same thing.
Any ideas?
