I have a very nice original 1960 Magnette MKIII but the motor needs help. I'm having trouble finding parts to rebuild it and I have a good motor and tranny from a 77 MGB. I want to finish this project and drive this great car but I don't want to hurt the resale value. From your standpoints as aficionados, do I swap out the motor or keep digging for parts for the old one? I'm in the heartland of the US so my market here is more American muscle than MG rarities.

Early ZA wiper motor mounting (7 replies)

I've been restoring my old ZA to the road after a very long lay-up (about twenty five years) and although it is running and road legal I'm finding a few bits which are different on mine from most others out there..
Mine is a tin-top dash early car - although registered in Jan 1955 it must have been made earlier - and the wiper motor on mine is different from the normal ones.
Fair enough I thought - mine might have a non original one - but I have a spare from another ZA with an even earlier chassis number that was in the family and was broken up in 1973 (before I inherited mine) and that wiper motor is the same.
The basic problem is that most normal wiper motors are fixed on a bracket with three screws or bolts on the top which bolt to the bodyshell. Mine doesn't. instead it has a moulding on the top with no bolts or holes for bolts, and instead is fixed to a different sort of bracket - incredibly it is held on by just three rubber plugs which are stuck on to the bottom half of the motor (the bit that looks like a square box).
I've looked at other cars and no-one has the same mounting. At the moment mine is held on with plastic cable ties pending a bracket being made to support it from underneath - which would seem to be all it needs, and which I can get fitted when the car goes in for bodywork in the near(ish) future.
Anyone else with an early ZA who had / has this sort of fitting?
My car is chassis 4123, and the spare is from 3389 (although that car was scrapped I still have the old chassis number).

Engine is a high mount on the right side.

The PO swore the engine came with the car (59 MGA 1500) and had only 32,784 miles on it. I measured the bore which was the standard factory bore. But only having the 4 digits is bugging the heck out of me. Everything comes up MG but the 2009. Does anyone have any thoughts about it?

Can someone tell me how the center filter assembly is held above the oil bath. My unit looks as if it has been thru the wars and there is no spindle & butterfly nut to locate it, nor can I see the normal internals where the spindle is normally mounted. There is a hole in the bottom of the alloy air trunking leading to the carbys which looks like it may centre up with the centre of the assembly. Is this where the spindle should be ?
I went to my first event in my MG Magnette today. Drive-It Day is a series of events organised to encourage people to get their classics out. I went to my local one in North Somerset and was surprised to see that MG was probably the most popular make there and not just MGBs because there were plenty of T-Types, a Y-Type and another Magnette.

Here are some of my pictures. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the other Magnette but it was a ZB Varitone in light green and dark green. I spoke to the owners of the Magnette who I found looking over mine. They seemed pleased to see another one there.

This one is for ARCH, but I thought I would post it separately.

I used a couple on bits from Minispares, a mini throttle cable and a bracket used for the twin carbs on the cooper s.
(About £ 20.00)
First I moved the operating level inside, I undid the bolts from the bracket in the engine bay and in the footwell. Make sure you sand down or clean the shaft, it makes getting the bits off much easier !
Take off the bracket and actuating lever. Then with a bit of fiddling remove the shaft into the footwell. It can be done - don't bend the shaft.
Refit with the actuating lever internal.

Take the throttle bracket an flatten it ( I used a vice ) drill a 10mm hole in the firewall and push the cable end hole out into the engine bay. Then drill another hole, using a bolt from the engine bay side secure the bracket. This has now given you a location for the throttle cable end.
I also fabricated a small bracket for the spring attachment.
The bracket on the carbs was also custom to get the right angle of 'pull'

So £ 20.00 and about 5 hrs.

Can anyone tell me why the centre boss turns with the horn ring as it should stay upright in the middle. The stator tube is clamped where it exits on the rack and adjusting the three grub screws on the steering wheel makes no difference. I fear that the cable running down the centre of the colume is going to twist itself left and right until it frays. Thanks for viewing Dave

Curious to hear the experience of others on these. When the boxes have gone bad on my Jaguars (RB340) I could smell where the smoke got out and was certain of their demise.

The RB106 on the MG has given me about 12,000 miles of trouble-free service but the other day I noted that the generator continued to charge during daytime running when it normally would creep down after startup as the battery was recharged. The battery condition is good (12.7 at rest) and starts the car with no trouble at all. When I put the volt/ohm tester across the terminals, as I held rpm, volts continued to creep up. Never went over 15, but always kept rising. At the terminals, I always have shot for no more than 13.5.

I gave the regulator box a whiff and it didn't have the burned-up smell I've experienced, so I am curious what folks think about this sudden shift in performance. Is the box dead or shall I start cleaning and adjusting this unit?

Or do I finally just get an alternator and live free?

Having spent the whole of yesterday trying to figure out why the car wouldn't fire, this afternoon she fired up for the first time in 5 years !
2 of the 'new' ht leads were duff and I finally sort the bloody Accuspark electronic ignition module.in the instructions they tell you to cover the base plate of the distributor with heat sink paste. This unfortunately acts like an insulator meaning the unit does not earth properly - so no spark.
I took it apart (for about the tenth time ) cleaned up the base plate screw and added an extra earth lead from the base plate screw to the screw for the old condensor position. I also set the trigger rotor a little higher to match the module height .
Put on new leads, set distributor (25d) to approx TDC, bit of choke and she fired first time. Rotated the distributor until she sounded sweeter, now time to book the rolling road for a proper set up.

I parted out a Magnette a few years ago and still have some parts.I found this listing I put on another site and it shows all the parts I had. I believe I still have most of this.

"I picked up a 1958 Magnette and am parting it out. Looks like a complete car with all the glass, dash, gauges, Engine, Trans, suspension and Interior. The only body panel that initially looks ok is the Bonnet which has some surface rust but no rot or dents. Balance of car was Rotten beyond repair.

The rear gears are already spoken for.
All parts will be shipped insured via UPS and I will provide a tracking number. Payment can be paypal, personal check or Postal money order. I prefer it to the others because of Paypals 5% but if you gotta have the part, it's secure and instant.

I've sold a lot of parts here and over at the British car Forum. I've got a really good track record with making people happy.

I also still have a ton of MGB, BGT, Midget and TD parts for sale.

I am taking offers and can provide pics and descriptions of everything. I'd be willing to trade for original or NOS parts for my 1952 TD which is mostly original and I am trying to keep it that way.

Please compose your emails beginning with my name and your full name completing the email.
Let me know what you need and I'll see if I still have it."

I found this MG Magnette in this garage on a farm in Norfolk East Anglia UK.
The owner had only used it for a few years then stored it away,he had owned it for 20 years..
I purchased it as a non runner.

When I got it home I carried out the usual process to the engine after long term storage and it ran like a Swiss watch.
A new stainless brake and clutch master cylinder and Stainless clutch slave cylinder was fitted.
The brakes were not seized.
Everything on the car was greased up or waxoiled before storage.

The interior is perfect.
A thorough valet inside and outside was carried out by myself.
Within a week I had an Mot on the car and was driving it.

What a great car they are.

More photo`s to follow.

I've finally got my barn find ZA back home to start work,as its going to end up with a V8 and a Jaguar IRS back end I cannot really leave drums at the front.

I know traditionally the conversion to do is MGA twin cam discs but I don't want wire wheels and the steel wheel hubs are not available. You can do a MGB swivel hub conversion but this messes up the Magnette's excellent geometry.

So I decided I should fit discs to the existing hubs somehow, having looked at the design this looked possible. The only modern cars in the UK with same wheel fitment to old MGs is oldish Saabs so I got some I've decided to try and fit Saab 99 turbo discs with some VW calipers I aleady have lying about.

Has anyone else done a similar conversion, I know MGB owners already use Saab rear brakes on race cars but has anyone done a Magnette front conversion?

I am not able to use the original oil/amp gauge so i want to put in both oil temperature and oil pressure gauges. Which is the better option electric or capillary ? Can I put a T piece on the original pipe connection and use it for both outputs ? is the block thread 1/8 NPT ? finally owo much additional oil capacity do you think the cooler and pipes will require ?

Hi again guys,

I have been searching lately for information concerning 5-speed gearbox conversion possibilities for my Magnette ZB project but have not come up with anything really definitive so far. So I thought I would post the question on this forum, to see if you can offer me any basic advice or point me towards information elsewhere.

The vehicle in question is an August 29th 1958 registered Varitone - KABJB/33469 - must be one of the last ZBs made? It has genuine mid-forty thousand miles on the clock with the original 1489cc engine. I intend to keep this car as one of my last classics (I shall be 68 in a couple of weeks but still going strong!) and would like to use it quite regularly, rather than keep it wrapped up in cotton wool. I would therefore appreciate a bit more performance to be in keeping with today's road conditions. I am putting the car onto wire wheels with MGA front discs and MGB calipers (got all the fancy conversion bits) and maybe a servo dependent on your advice. I shall probably poly-bush the suspension and upgrade the shockers all round. I think the chassis is well up to it, yes?

So first of all I am considering an engine upgrade to a 5-bearing MGB unit and have 2 already available - one is a standard 1800, circa 1979 I think, with 28,000 miles on it, the other being an Oselli modified unit which may be 2 litre (not investigated it much so far but it came from a crashed racer which was winning at the time!). Let me hasten to add I am fully aware that the swap is not as straight-forward as it might seem. I am, however, a fully qualified engineer and competent enough to handle the various mods with the sump, oil pick-up etc etc.

But when it comes to a suitable 5-speed box (I am in UK) the choice is less clear. I have heard of a Ford type-9 conversion, using a completely different bell-housing (hmm, bit expensive and I aint made of money - spent it all on classics!).

I have also read of folk in the USA utilising Datsun/Nissan boxes? I do already have a back-plate, LT box and clutch from a 2000cc Rover SD1 which was to have gone on the back of a T-series Rover twin-cam/Scimitar project (another dream) - but I understand that would need lots of tunnel mods to fit a Magnette and is not well recommended in anycase?

I quite fancy engineering my own unique conversion (I have access to a decent engineering workshop) and have been looking at other manufacturer's boxes inc BMW (ZF, Getrag etc) but there is much homework to do - ratios, clutches, fly-wheels, starter motor positions, support mountings, input-shaft compatibility, shifter position, etc, etc. Then there is the question of axle ratios.

Anyway, perhaps I am covering old ground here? So as not to waste time, has anyone any knowledge to impart before I hurtle off down the wrong tracks!

Cheers,

On the theory that an engine in boxes will do little good on the day that I really need one, I've been trying to assess what I have and put an engine together.

The engine number is missing. The casting number on the block is 1H858. The engine is is a 1500, but the 1500 seems to be on a plate screwed onto the block rather than cast as part of the block.

The engine is not machined for a mechanical tachometer drive - well at least not where it would be on an MGA. So I'm wondering if this block is from a Magnette

(The block has about a 3.0" bore, maybe a few thousands more, deep dish pistons +0.060" and MGA conrods (by casting number). The deck of the engine has eyebrows cut in for valves.

I have a head (casting no. 1H967) that was from a MGA 1600 with a supposed 39cc chamber volume that I was planning to use with one size oversize valves, 1.562" inlet and 1.343" exhaust.

If it is a Magnette engine, is there anything tricky I should know for my rebuilt?

Thanks.

My 1500 engine has developed two simultaneous issues (read: problems) that are related to coolant. As shown in the picture, one issue is that a freeze plug seems to be oozing. The second issue is that, upon cold startup, oil in addition to condensation drips a little from the exhaust. Engine is good right now, otherwise.

Could be a blown head gsket and a leaking freeze plug. Remedy - remove engine.

I am wondering if instead of the obvious conclusions that they are unrelated issues, could they be related to a corrosive coolant. I just noticed that some coolants are premixed and some require water. Also, some are for pre-1980 cars. Should I be using special coolant for this engine?

Hi Folks,

I am about to start restoring a lovely old 1958 Magnette Varitone which currently wears its original, if uninspiring 2-tone grey livery. The interior is equipped with really good red leather.

Way back in the '60s, I ran a Riley 4/72 with Damask Red over Old English White and loved it to bits. I have a fancy to paint the Varitone in the same colours, with the red above the white.

However, most photos of Varitones I see always seem to carry the lighter colour above the darker one. It's just a matter of personal taste I suppose but have you any opinion and does anyone have any pics to demonstrate the point?

Just FYI, I also intend adding a set of wire wheels which should smarten things up!

I was checking the brake adjustment last week and found one of the rear drums was well lubricated with differential oil - the inner hub seal had failed.

Managed to get a pair of seals and did the replacements yesterday. This brings me to a very interesting discovery (and the reason for this post)

Is anyone else aware of a small drain hole inside the rear hub which is to drain off any oil which leaks from the axle?

While I was poking around with the hub, I noted the casting has an oil throwing ring on the inner edge. This fits into a catching plate on the brake backplate and drains through a drilling at the 6 O'Clock position - Both of mine were blocked with road dirt. If these were clear, I would have saved on a set of new brake shoes and a lot of mess.

There is nothing in the manual about the drain, it seems to me, to be very important it is kept clear. Otherwise there is nothing preventing the brakes from getting a good lubrication, should the seal fail.

The hole can be cleared externally with a 3/32" (2.5mm) drill bit.

Is this useful, or am I the last to discover this?

Ive been reading on here a bit about fitting discs on farinas. Its been talk about a lot over the years on diffrent forums So heres my pennys worth hope it is of help.

Right i have been asked to add my bit to this thread as here in the UK between me and a few others we have converted A60's to discs. I must point out i am not a mechnic nor do i know how to work a lathe it is only with help from others we have been able to do this.

As people above have said parts from other BMC stuff can be made to fit, but nothing bolts straight on. Healey, Westy And MGB being the ones im aware off.

We have used both Westy and MGB. I dont know anyone as yet to use Healey for one most parts are the same as Westy apart from you may end up having to fit wire wheels and any thing with Jealey on is big money.

Il stick with the Westy swap first.

The first problem with this is that you will end up with five stud wheels, but if you run Westy wheels this will be hidden by the hub cap. Westy wheels come in 13 and 14 inch but you will end up needing two spare wheels for front and back unlless like us you run a Westy back axle but thats another story. The Westy stub axles king pins etc all bolt on with out any machine work but you will have to mess around with the steering rods to get the tracking right. We have fitted two cars with westy parts both were fitted with steering racks but the rack did not work correctly as all the angles were wrong and this is still to be looked at. The other problem like Healey Westy parts are hard to find and not cheap.

Unlike MGB bits which are so easy and cheap to get hold of as there are so many of the damm things (sorry not a fan!)

I have two Magnettes A60 shape that run discs using MGB and A60 parts both are done a diffrent way.

One this was a kit that was made availbe buy a member of the Cambridge and Oxford owners club. His name is Mike Laffin and he worked out and machined all the parts him self. He sold them as a kit it was not cheap and due to a low demarned didnt sell many but its a great bit of work.

The kit uses A60 kinpins and stub axles the stub axles are machined down to take a mgb hub. He then removes the A60 back plate from the stub axle and machines a new one to hold the caliper. This bolts on using the same four bolts as on the A60 back plate. This means the steering is not affected in any way. I under stand he no longer makes the kits and took no measurements. The kit i have is on my car and works very well but apart from me and Mike i dont know of any one else with one. Most people were put off by the cost but when you look at what hes done i dont think you can complain.

THe other way is to fit a complete MGB stub axles kinpin etc. This can be done a couple of ways. The top bolt is the same on an A60 and mgb so nothing is needed here, Its at the bottom that is diffrent. The MGB one is much wider and needs to be machined down to fit between the A60 wishbones. You can then either make up some top hat bushes and a sleve to go in the wishbones and throgh the kinpin or as i done on the last one you can fit an A60 fulcrum bolt as these are the same diamitar as the MGB king pin. You also need to hold the fulcrum bolt in place i did this buy tapping a thread into the bottom of the mgb kin pin a simply put a bolt to hold the fulcrum in place. The only problems with this way is are the ride height and camber. It will make the car about 3/4 of an inch lower but if you take out the spacers between the the spring plate and wishbones this should correct this. Early 1500 cars dont have these spacers. Last but not least the camber your car will end up with posative camber. Not enought to worry about unless you want to enter the Paris to Dakar! At the moment me and another are looking at ways to over come this.

Right i hope this makes sence sorry about my spelling etc any questions i will try and help i did have some photos but i think they wre lost on an old lap top.

I did read an article many years ago about some one who machined MGB kin pins to fit inside A60stub axles but i know no more il try a find a link to it.

Clausager's book on MG Saloons 1920-1970.

It may only have a chapter in it on our lovely motors but it's still a worthy purchase in my opinion.
Happy in Holmfirth!

I occasionally post on a Wolseley tech forum as the ZA, ZB & Varitone Magnettes share a common design with the 4/44. One of the posts focused an individual desire to own a Farina Wolseley Coupe. This led to a posting of a Farina Magnette which had received the coupe treatment.

The following picture is my photoshop altered version of this car slightly lowered, but incorporating a very small roof chop and the front doors also lengthened slightly to enhance the coupe look. The wheels are part of the original 'as posted' image.

I thought I'd post some pictures of my 1955 Magnette ZA which is now with me after an elongated restoration. I have started a new thread as the issues documented in my Overheating Woes thread are hopefully behind me!

The car had not been used since 2001 and it was sold to a classic car dealer in 2004 but not touched until I bought it unseen in July 2008. It was delivered straight to the restorers and then was returned to me at the end of December 2012. These are the first pictures I have taken of it since it has been with me.

I've discovered an annoying trick with the boot lid on my ZA :(

It's been either off of the car or not latched into position for a number of years and now that I'm at the stage of aligning and latching it down I find that it doesn't fit. The curve of the lid seems to have straightened out and it no longer follows the line of the wings, sitting lower in the middle and proud at the bottom edge.

Anybody got any ideas how to pull it back into shape as I really don't want to change the lid due to the amount of work gone into it? :S

On Saturday 1st December a few Magnette owners with nothing better to do went to a small place on the outskirts of Sydney to retrieve 5 Magnettes from a shed or what the Americans would call a barn. We had been warned that the temperature was likely to top 40C as a heatwave had made its way across Australia. Luckily it was only 38C.
Bruce Ginn, the custodian of Alison, had arranged with the family of the deceased owner. The small property had been sold and if not retrieved they would be removed for scrap. Four had been listed on ebay, but not sold. Access was so difficult even the intrepid Loz Scott had driven about 1200 miles to see them without alot of success.
The owner who had wrecked Magnettes, Wolseley's, Y's and MGA had parked these cars there. One he purchased from Bruce, the rare single colour Varitone 37 years previously.
The shed had been sealed by the owner years ago so that access was only possible by a side door. Bruce Ginn partially cut away long grass and moved tin to let some light onto the cars.
The tally for those who don't want to read further, One red ZA, one black ZB, one Reseda (light) green ZB, one single Steel Blue ZBV and one two tone green ZBV.
First problem was to get access to the cars. The first photo shows the 5 cars. Apologies for my bad photos first.

Our much loved Magnette "Billy the Kid" has to go, a restoration which has just run out of time. The vehicle was purchased by our family in 1973.The engine was brand new in 1996 and has only approximately 2000km on it.
The body requires some removal of rust and new paint. We have all the parts plus 4 extra doors, 1 front right guard and new windscreen rubbers for a complete restoration. Seats require reupholstering, roof lining is intact, also requires new wiring loom. Great project for someone with the time to spend on the car. The vehicle is located on the Gold Coast. Please feel free to contact me on 0439 038 077 should you require any relevant information.

She's a barn find with lots of great parts. This is a 1960 MG Magnette Mark III (best guess on the year...it is identical to our original 1960 Mark III) with no title. Everything seems to be here, including some hard-to-find pieces. Motor and tranny are here but in unknown condition.
Stuff you can use: all the glass, headlight trim and lenses, front turn signal lenses, dash, clock, shifter, steering wheel, interior is rough but there, trunk emblem, rear reflectors (have both) grill (dented in the center), front bumper (rough), rear bumper (dented), trunk latch, wiper arms, interior and exterior door hardware, mirrors.
Body: floors are gone and right side is dented, left side doors aren't bad and fenders are salvageable, trunk lid and hood are fairly good.
Don't spend your time finding and paying for all these parts individually...she'll have most of what you need in 1 spot. Located in Moline, IL. Call 309-764-3030

I do the MGA gear conversion to the TD-TF axle on an exchange basis and am in need of some pumpkins for the gears. I understand the ZB and ZBV used the 4.55 gears and the later MarkIII and Mark IV used the 4.3 gearing. I use both these ratios in my conversions. The gears must be rust free (pinion flange can have a little rust OK) and without any heavy wear, galling,or chips. It's also a good idea to look at the markings on the ring gear itself not just the case markings to confirm the ratio. I mention these things because I've had several "good" pumpkins shipped to me that were not useable.

<s></s>Hi, I guess I'm a newbi on this Forum. I recently purchased a 58 ZB. After having MGA's most of my life, this is quite a change. I am loving this ZB. Not only am I not struggling to get in & out of, but it handles well.
My problem however, is that the rear carb is driping after the engine is turned off. It doesn't leak while the engine is running. To get to the carb, that monstrocity of the air induction is beyond my capeability to remove. I do not have normal hand, they are more like paws. Take a size 15 ring, if that tells you anything. Any suggestions on an easier way to remove that air induction?
I have checked the float in the bowl & it is OK. Any help appreciated.
Cheers

My ZB has now completed 300 miles since the rebuilt MGB 3-main engine went back in (2nd time).

Yesterday I took it out for a short drive after several weeks storage, and as soon as I put my foot on the clutch (engine running) I could feel this pulsation under my foot that I have never felt before.

The clutch is the MGB diaphragm type with MGB cover and withdrawal mechanism and all brand new when the engine went in.

I thought that the pulsation might disappear after a while but after about half an hour's driving it was still there.

I cannot visualise what is happening to cause this. Has anyone any ideas?
Hap's 4th Annual announcement

Yep, hard to beleive, we have not been ran off from here yet So once again we plan on returning to Carolina Motorpsorts Park for our 4th annual British Invasion at CMP. This is about as laid back of event as it gets, bring your street car (preferably British, but not required) to track on Saturday Nov. 12th, and get to do two 20 minute session on the track in a spirited manner, no helmets required, passengers are welcome to ride alone. We normally meet and park over the near turn 2, near the concession stand, nice restrooms also near by (I know you ladies like such details). Overall it's just a fun time, to get to go out on the track in our little cars, and take a few laps at something much better than a pace lap. CMP is a interesting road racing track, very technical and designed for cars like our LBCs, go as slow or fast (within reason) as you like, for the faster folks, trust me, you'll like this, we normally attack the corners and back off on the straights, you'll be plenty tested. All CMP has ever ask us for is the normal gate fee, I think it is 5 or 10 bucks a head, it cost nothing to do the track sessions. We normally have about 15-20 British cars there, lots of neat stuff, lots of the folks that done this with us, have been with us since the first year, so they must be enjoying, it I know I do, I like seeing the smile on folks faces when they come off the track and start telling you about there time on track, like kids at Christmas Men, women, children, dogs, you name it, you're all welcome.
3rd Annual British Invasion at CMP

When: Saturday Novemeber 13, 2010

Where: Carolina Motorsports Park Kershaw, SC

A rare opportunity to drive your LBC around CMP's 2 mile road course for spirited lapping sessions. Be there around 10:00 - 10:30 am and we will go on track around noon for (2) 20 minute lapping sessions. There is a small gate fee to get in the track, but the lapping sessions are free.

This is an extremely casual and laid back event, everyone gives everyone else a little room on track, you drive at the pace you feel comfortable with. No safety equipment required, roadsters welcomed. I will be the driving instructor and pace car (and it will be brisk pace ), and gave you a few tips about getting around CMP course (I won a few SCCA races there) in a driver's meeting before the lapping sessions.

Can someone verify for me what the connection between the rear carburetor and the throttle rod looks like?
I am wondering how much carburetor rod (after the spring) is available to connect the throttle rod. My rebuilt carb doesn't quite have the 1/4" or so needed.

I am installing rebuilt (MGA type) HS4 carburetors and manifold on a 1500 engine, that previously had a 62' MGB manifold and HS4 carbs. Since the throttle linkage for the MGB attached differently, the PO modified the horizontal linkage bar into the rear carburetor (see Parts List picture and photo).

You can see that I don't have the original horizontal section of throttle rod as is in the Parts List. I am considering attaching it straight, without the original bends, to the carb except for the above problem. Could it be that the carburetor throttle rod is longer on the Magnette or is the spring contained with a combo connector?

Day 1

Well, I've finally decided to do some carving and sectioning on the Magnette with the aim to create a coupe. I might say, had the car not gone through a fire I would never have contemplated taking this course of action. They tell me...whoever they are?... that for every bad thing that happens something positive can be gained. This is my take on it.

* Initially I started drilling through the spot welds (waste of time) and getting no where. I'm also very impatient! I then decided to use a slitting disc in my angle grinder and cut through 1 layer of steel. This was quick and effective and I didn't have to chisel and bend the steel...which just makes for a horrible mess and lots of repair work. What you see here took about about 2 and half hours and this is my first side. I'll do the drivers side (RHD in OZ)...just tack everything in place, then move to the passenger side. I'm still considering whether to remove the roof gutters. ~ Vince

Something that I had never thought of before!
I do some competition with my car and change the diff ratios occasionally. I never bothered to take note of which axle came from which side and just grabbed an axle of the bench and put it in.
Big mistake.
The axles go in to diff centre a differant depth on each side.
With the age of these bits of metal its important to but them in left and right as I think the metal is used to rotateing under power one way.
One of my axles broke and it was only then that I had a close look at the spline and noticed the differance.
I have a pretty powerfull motor and the axles are reasonable robust but the twist one way I think would be better kept that way.
Time will tell as I have put 2 new old ones in that have never been swaped from one side to the other.
