Surprising good result hand painting engine bay

When I removed my brake and clutch master cylinder box and surrounding components I just couldn't put the new components in over the top of that dirty, corroded engine bay that had been spray painted flat black by a previous owner on this white car. Realizing that it is impossible to spray around and under components I decided I would try to paint it by hand. This car is a driver and will not receive the frame off attention that I normally would prefer. I purchased Rustoleum white primer and satin finish white enamel from Home Depot and started hand painting the engine bay last night. I am very pleased with the results!. I used a 3/4 inch very thin but strong bristled artists brush. The first coat primer had a small amount of bleed through but the second coat looks really good. No visible brush strokes and at a 3 foot distance looks factory. Using the small brush allowed me to work around some components that are too difficult to take off for painting purposes. A satin or flat finish will look best - gloss shows too many imperfections. The hardest part is leaning over the engine bay - it is a bit tedious.

If you have a well worn engine bay on your driver I recommend trying this approach.

Lighter colors seem to work better. I brush painted the bay on my roadster, and it came out looking pretty good. When I brushed the bay on my GT it turned out just so so.
