I want to request a special spot in hell for...

Whoever the engineer/designer was who put the dashboard attaching bolt right above the steering column. I installed the dash fully loaded and wired, and the only way I was even able to START this nut was by crazy gluing the nut to the end of my finger and maneuvering into place.

I still need to sort out how to tighten the nut..any hints:S Anyone have a rubber extension for their rachet?

The question is, how did the factory do this on the assembly line? I'd love to be able to go back and watch a number of operations to see how they did them. There is no way they could futz around for an hour trying to get one nut on.

I watched it done.....two normal sized ladies did this job on the trim deck. Tach was out...reached in through the hole and put the nut on. Put tach in. They built about 100 MGBs a day at the peak.....stop your bitchin.....

I guess they had to have ladies doing this job....seems guys would be throwing hammers after the first 5 minutes?
never saw the MG manufacturing process, was fascinated by the assembly of FORDs during the 70's. We built 61 cars an HOUR

Terry,
Good question regarding the factory. That's probably why they went broke! Assembly methods had to be extremely labor intensive. They either put the dash panel on, then all the gauges and switches, or assembled the dash and putzed around for a long time!

Peter, I haven't tried this yet, but past experience with PTA dash nuts & bolts, try a combination of 1/4" drive extensions and socket. Sometimes a Universal socket on a wobble drive extension will get into some pretty nasty spots. Alternatively, do as the others said, leave it loose and have a good nights sleep!

A pneumatic chisel applied to the top of the cowl in the right place may make accessing the nut a little easier. If you mis-postion the hole it should be easy to enlarge it enough to get you arm in there, from hand to elbow, and use a one inch drive pull bar.

If you have trouble with that, I suggest that you consult a good cardiologist for further advice,as I understand it they can now do a triple bypass though an incision made in the belly button.

FYI: Further research of my old flat-rate books reveals nothing about the factory time allotted to the work.

Ordinarily I wouldn't suggest this method, but since you are such a master welder, filling the opening with un-done beer cans should be a snap.
