Anyone need a Sebring or custom body kit???

I will be pulling molds off my Sebring front and rear valances in order to make new parts. There is also the possibility of designing new parts all together. I am a professional automotive design clay modeler and have been designing and fabricating show cars and prototypes for about 8 years, so these kits will be tastefully done. If I do a re-design, I will pull molds off the clay modeled front/rear valance, wing, etc. and make fiberglass parts to send out if I can generate enough interest. I can also do a couple different designs for the parts listed above and make separate molds for each. If you have any design suggestions or other parts you would like to see produced, let me know. You can email me at scarpacci2002@yahoo.com or respond to this posting...Thanks!!!

I'm not sure what the market is on these. But it would sure be awesome if somebody was making the berlinette front fenders with the reseced and covered head lights. They are gorgeous. I'm sure I am not the only one that would want a set. I doubt they would be cheap but they sure are pretty.

Hey David,
Thanks for your interest. I make these parts using a process called resin vacuum infusion. So your final part will be stronger and more lightweight. I also use the glass cloth and epoxy resin which is much stronger and a bit more flexible than the usual polyester resin and chopped strand.

Re the fiberglass process. Many of the parts are made up using a chopper gun to spray on a chopped glass strand and resin mixture. Fast and cost effective but not very riged. If a compination of mate and roving, woven glass cloth, are used then the part will be sronger and less likley to lose its original shape. More time comsuming as it has to be done by hand and properly air rolled. Vacume bagging may be the real answer. Count me in as very interested.

Thanks Jim! My wife and I are in the process of moving in the next couple weeks so I'm gonna wait till I get into the much BIGGER garage to work on the flares. I will also need a donor car or just the fenders when I tackle the flares and rear valance so I don't scratch or muck up my car. So if anyone is interested in donating your car/fenders for a little while, I will in turn offer you some of my newly designed fiberglass parts for your B for free! Sounds like a good deal to me. Email me at tonyjennes@yahoo.com if you're interested. Hap,

I've thought about going with the retro 8s (your's of course) It would be cheaper and stronger but I have always loved a look that was very popular with club racers in the fifties and sixties of white wire wheels. I had them on my 55 Healey BN-1 100-4 and painted my Dunlops that way when I first got my 67 GT. Of course I could paint the retro 8s that way (when the minilights came out I saw some painted but they were usually a sort of hazard yellow, which was pretty cool looking too)But damn me, despite the problems I've had with the splined hubs (I put on the brakes in the Healey, the drum stopped but the front wheel didn't--yeowee!)I love the look of the two earred knock-off and I just purchased a new set of four with the MG crest in the middle. So, since the retro 8s don't have the plate for them, it looks like I'll just have to save my pennies for what I'm looking for. As for the flairs, I'm caught between putting them on and running my Dunlops until...or just fixing the stock fenders, then cutting them up to put on the flairs when I have the wheels and tires to match. My fear is that if I don't do it now I never will.

David, FWIW, I always get myself in trouble when I announce these sorts of things :), but we have listen to you all and will be working on a VTO spline drive wheel in the future, I can't say when the project will be done, but it atleast it's being planned at this point, which was not the case that long ago.

Just to give you guys a idea on what I will be doing with Tony's front valance, I don't need a lower opening as my oil cooler on my 1967 GT is up on the radiator shelf, and I see no need to move in on my street car, so I'll carefully cut the opening out at the seams, then reglass the opening flush with the rest of the valance, then reglass it from behind, and smooth out on the front so to look like it has no opening. Now I will probably make a smaller center front opening, that will probaby be a fake, just a black painted retangular, with SS screen and aluminum framing around it, I think the small fake opening will look good and no one will be the wiser that it is not functionable. Just my taste, and using Tony's valcne to get the look I'm after, that the neat thing about fiberglass it is easiy to rework and play with to get the custom look you want.

I may or may not be putting mine on at this stage of my build. I want the car on the road and the Huffakers will need at least 15X6 wheels and 205X60s to look right (I'm talking $1,500 to $2,000 for wheels and tires, Probably Dayton's.)So my 15X4.5 Dunlops may have to suffice.

Dave, have you considered doing a bolt on conversion to your car, thats exactly what I did to my 67 GT, I did Jeff's method, by leaving the spoke wheel rear end housing in the car, and running bolt hubs fornt and rear, a wheel spacer on the rear and longer studs, it a preety easy conversion, and Bruno did a great job of ducumenting this on the library here. It's nice because I could use the stackable 1/8" wheel spacing I had to tune where I wanted the wheel and tire to be. You get aways form expensie sline hubs and all thepitflal thay can have and you save big time on wheel cost.

Ok getting to wheels , we have the 15x7 at VTO in 0 offset in Classic 8 and Retro 4, and will have this same size and offset in the new Leamans by summer time, and they will be consderabley less than spline drive wheels, also the 15x7 0 offest works great with the flared MGB ad for bring tthe wheel and tire out to the flares, and it exactly what I will be running on my 68 GT SCCA race car, the problem is with most wheels this size they come in way too much offset for FWD cars with stock fenders, and we made these wheels for SCCA race cars with flared fenders, so it somewhat a unique size and offset. Oh and we also now have 16x7 and 16x8 for folks doing something alittle different.

I've gotta say I think Hap is right, the Huffakers do the most justice to the B's body work. I've not 'pinned' mine on yet (I'm just a little chicken-it takes guts to cut into a perfectly good set of fenders) But I have taped them more or less in place to study the job ahead. Number 9 has them nicely feathered in and they don't seem to as abrupt (or dare I say it?) as agressive as the version I have.
It may be that mine will fit like those on #9 once I trim away the excess mounting lip. Or it could be that mine just bulge out more than the ones on #9.

One thing to think about, is the line on the side of MGB body where the side trim goes, Huffaker triies to incorporate this body line into his design and I think that is a good thing, of course the stock side trim will not work with most of the flares, but most guys doing flares get rid oif the side trim anyway. Again it comes do to what the "buying" consumer would want.

I still like the Huffaker style better. The Corbra and other flares are just immediate flares and do little to none to incorporate the lines of the body. The flare I like the least that folks put on MGB is the Omni flare, it defiantely looks like after thought add-on, and it's shape has nothing to do with the lines of the MGB body. I like a flare that looks like it was part of the body of the MGB, rather than something simply added on, and thats what alot of the flares look like, then the other end of the spectrum is the Sebring flare which IMHO is just too buldging. Tony, but at the end of the day, you should make whatever people want to buy.

Kinda boy racer in my opinion. Bolt-on flares, ground effects, etc just don't lend themselves well to the simple lines of an MGB. The styling of an MGB was never intended to be flashy, so a lot of this stuff would just look out of place to my eyes. Z-cars have a much more modern appearance. Even though they're only eight years younger than the MGB (1970), they more closely resemble a 2000 car than a 1960 car.

Are you only making a few of these, or will you continue to make them for a while? I'm interested in one, but don't have the funds at the moment.
Hey Andrew, no worries I'll probably be making a bunch of them over the next year. So far I've sold 5 of the valances with the splitter. They are made to order, so as soon as I get payment from people, it only takes a few days to pump out a part. Just let me know when you're able to order and I'll make one for ya.

Tony, Here is a good picture of back of Cobra flare. Would look good on front and back. If you have 6" wide wheels you could make a spacer out of 2x4's(1 1/2" wide) to know how wide for coverage. Most guys with flares have 7-8" wide rims. My guess 3-4" wide.

Hey Jim, I like the look of that flare. I've got pics that I'll post later of a few flares on a 240z that look pretty good too.

Tony, will the wheel flares work with your current design or will you be designing another valence panel to work with them?

Thanks Randy

Hey Randy, the current valance will work with fender flares. The front side of the wheel arch on the new fender flare will meet the valance similar to Jim's picture of the Cobra posted above. The bottom front corner of the flare will have a return flange and attach to the valance. Hope that makes sense. I'll draw you up something and post it later so you know what I'm talking about.

Tony, Another idea on the flares. How about a little more flare on the bottom rear like the 289 cobra. The Cobra is aluminum but, you can see where it is wide in rear.

Hey Jim, I like the Cobra flares alot. Once I start building it in clay I can decide on what it needs to look like and play around with the design a bit. Of course your input will be greatly appreciated.

Blake- are the turn signals on the wrong way?

Jim- Thanks! Yeah, I agree on the flares. I'm going to be doing a more rounded look on the back. The flat ones look a bit off for some reason. Or maybe I'll play around with a half flat/half round? As far as the "tooth" on the valance, that can be easily removed if you were to purchase one. That was my little add to the design just to break up the shape of the opening. Everyone is entitled to their opinion...

Just to add a bit more on the valances... the fiberglass was hand laid with epoxy resin, which is less prone to cracking and much more durable than the polyester resin that most companies shoot through a chopper gun. To give you an idea, epoxy resin is used in the aerospace industry and also Formula One Racing for their durable carbon fiber parts, so this valance is pretty sturdy and yet flexible enough to work with. As I have stated before, the valance mounts from the rear through the existing mounting holes so no fasteners will be seen from the outside. I closed off the center opening in case you want to go for a more flush look or cut it open. The brake duct/fog light openings will also be closed off at the back. If you choose to close off either the center opening or brake duct/fog light openings all you have to do is cut out close out panel, move it forward so its flush to the outside surface and fill the edges. The lower splitter/lip is height adjustable with a sliding channel located on the back side of the lip which is attached to the valance with bolts. All instructions and fasteners will be provided with the kit just in case you're lost. But in all, its very easy to install and there are many different options that you can go with. Let me know what ya think!

The Huffaker flares mold into the lines of the car far better, I sold Tom Nagy my Huffaker spat flares a while back and he was going to reproduce them, I did get a set of rears for him, but I don't think he ever got the fronts done, he was going to need to re-do the front as they were designed to work with the front valance and air dam Huffaker was using, and you didn't really need all of that on the street car.

For my SCCA 68 GT race car, I have a set of complete rear fenders that were molded off the above #9 car, that I'll be using, the car already has a set of front fiberglass fenders, and I think I may ebnd up using the rear flares Tim nset me and graphing them into the front fiberglass fender, they take a bit of work to get them on the front and fitting just right, but I think it will work fine and I already own them, so money saved. Joe actually now makes these spat flres or either complete fender for the MGBs now, but tI think they are rae wiehgt som a heavier cloth flares would be better and more sturdy for a street car, the race stuff is paper thin mde from matt shot from a chopper gun.

How far do the Huffaker's stick out from the stock fender vs. the Sebring version? I also have a few different ideas on rear wings/spoilers and a different design for the rear valance, but I'll save that for another thread...and of course when I'm done with the current project. :)

I'm honored you've asked my opinion Tony!

I think design-wise the front valance with all the variations your offering is really there. Sebring-style rear valances such as yours and mine flow very nicely with the B body, so accomodations for an inset license plate and exhausts cut outs (either single or dual for the V8 crowd) and an attachment system that simplifies installation might be the limit.(But very much appreciated I'm sure)

Fender flairs is the place where I see the most interest and the most need. Asthetically the GT takes any style flair better than the roadsters do. So I would concentrate on designs that look good on the roadsters first. The problem with the flairs out now is, for the most part that they are too wide. The Sebring style leaves a lot of empty space to be filled by wheel and tire. The limit on a B body seems to be a about a 7X15 wheel with 205 or 225 R 60s. I just purchased a full set of Huffaker style flairs and these are not as radical as the Sebrings while still conforming to the FIA/SCCA requirement that the wheel openings match the shape of the original body work. However the Huffakers are going to take a lot of work on each flair to get them to smoothly match the sheet metal and they will be under a lot of tension to conform to the wheel openings. The arc at the bottom tips are spread wider than they should be. Plus again, there are no provisions for attaching them to the body while the adhesive is setting. So I'll be a drilling a number of holes (at least 7 in each) in both the flair and the body to lash them down, hopefully without them cracking or breaking. Unlike the valances which have to account for the variance between CB and RB cars, there is really no excuse for flairs being so far off in their shape coming out of the box. On the other hand, looking at cars like Dan Master's GT there's no need to adhere to the FIA/SCCA requirement that the flairs match the 'profile' of the original body work. It is with the V8-V6 folks that you'll see the most interest. Right now they are using metal VW Rabbit and Plymouth Horizon flairs, or Sebrings or some of the other full body kits with oversized fenders. Or doing nothing because the B body will take a 6" wide wheel (with careful axle location) and a 195 to 205 width tire.

As for rear spoiler or wing on the GT, I've toyed with the idea of an adjustable one attached at the rear of the roof or the top of the hatch, rather than the style which does nothing aerodynamically and affixes at the bottom between the tail lights. This is going to be tricky to get something that looks right and functional with PeninFarina's nifty body work.

What you might look into is producing a flush fitting deck lid for behind the seats of a roadster. The one that is available from Moss is awful.

Hope this gives you a couple of ideas.

Hey Hap, thanks for all your support and kind words!:) I think this whole process has been a blast. Sometimes a bit stressful on my end, but in all pretty fun. Its always good to get feedback from everyone on what works and what doesn't as far as design. Everyone has their different tastes and because of that, this kit will appeal to everyone due to the versatility of the design. One can pretty much add or remove different pieces to achieve the personalized look they are looking for.

Here are more pics...

Looks good Tony, I think the your options on the openings are good idea, leaving it up to customer on what they want. For example for most of us the center opening in nothing more than cosmetics anyway, it serves no purpose on CB cars unless the oil cooler was relocated, so a guy can smooth over the opening/s, or change it whatever shape thay want. I'd probably go for a smaller "faux" center opening look, I think it will look good, but it will be there just for looks, and I can decide how much or little center opening I want. I've worked with fiberglass race body panels for most of my adult life, so I don't expect to open a box and your valance to be everything I want as deliever, and thats fine with me, I can customize it slightly to suit me, and I think that is a big plus for me, and most customers, a unique part that still allows the individual consumer to tweak to their likings.

Tony, let me thank you for taking on such a project, and putting it out there for everyone to judge, thats always a tough deal, there's no doubting you have a talent. Creativity is not something we "dudes" normally pocess, most of us are lucky to leave the house with pants and shirts that match :), I think thats why 90% of the cars in our hobby are either green or red, we lack imagination and creativity. Being a art student and excelling at that early in life, I learned real quick, being imagative and creative can help you to lead the pack, rather than follow the pack, and you sir are leading the pack, job well done!

So Tony, as you already know, put me down for the first consumer unit, and let me know how and when to pay you, I definately plan on putting my money where my mouth is. :D

Thanks Steve! As far as the "tooth", I wanted to add something in there to break up the shape of the opening and to compliment the MG logo on the grille. I think the pictures and the fact that its in primer are kind of deceiving to the eye. Once its painted, I think it will blend in with the rest of the front end. I'll try to get some better photo's soon, with some mesh inserts also. I also wanted to mount the chrome bumper to see if it interferes with the fog light openings.

I think it's looking really good. Personally I don't care for the "tooth" in the middle, but the overall design is great. A loose mesh in the center opening might help it to not look quite so large compared to the radiator grill opening. Nice job!

EDIT: I take it back about the large opening. Now that more photos are posted, it doesn't look as proportionally big.

Keep in mind that this is the unfinished prototype, the final product will of course look much better than what you see in the pics. The kit will include closeout panels to cover the fog light/brake duct holes as well as the center opening should you choose to go with a different look. The kit will also have the option of having the lower splitter at an extra cost. Let me know what ya think!

Well then another Rookie question is how are the turn signals mounted then since they're in the Bumper? and which grill will fit the front opening?
Thanks Guy's,
Marshall

On chrome bumper MGBs, the turn signal are made into the fenders, like Tony's car pictured above. On the rubber bumper MGB, the turn signals are indeed part of the RB assembly, so any chrome bumper, or bumplessless conversion for a RB MGB will include you having to mount turn signals.

haha...I guess its official, you're first Hap! The prototype is fitted and bolted on the car, just finishing up a little bodywork here and there before I paint it.
To answer your question Marshall, the valance will mount onto the OEM mounting location, but it will bolt from behind instead of on the front like the Sebring valance. In other words the valance will be flush with the fenders and the bolts will not be visible from the outside, also unlike the Sebring. Plus it also has an adjustable splitter lip for more downforce and so you don't bash it on any curbs. :)
