Update. Leak lasted about 20 minutes. Cock. Got it back, tightened it up a little more and (to my shame) wrapped some plumbers mate around the seal. Bit of a bodge but we'll see if either the tightening or the putty sorts it. Weirdly I also found a wire that has seemingly never been connected.. it's a white wire with black stripe coming out of the loom towards the alternator. No mention of it on any diagrams and everything seems to have worked without it connected so I'm assuming it's the work of a PO.

Not to fear, the white and black wire is used with the original points set up. It runs the tach on post 72 cars (with pertronix) but isn't needed for earlier vehicles.
