Good morning all.

I usually post on the MGA or MGB sites, but I need a quick answer about MGC disc brakes from you knowledgeable MGC folks.
Last week I noticed the carcass of an MGC sitting way back in the weeds of a locak junkyard. I was interested in the MGC for the larger disc brakes and 72 spoke 15" wire wheels for my MGA which has the updated MGB calipers.

I want to know if the MGC disc brakes will fit on a "B", are the MGC calipers the same as those on big Healeys and TR6, and is there a noticeable
increase in stopping power with the "C" disc brakes installed on a "A" or a "B".

Thank you all in advance.
Regards, lee

What else is on that carcass?!

Rick-
well, "How" Big Chief Mowog.
I've seen your tribal name for many years, usually upside down on MG trannys when i'm under the car crawling around on my back trying to undo the tranny mount bolts-never thought there were any living tribal members, kind of like the mohegans.

tell me what you are looking for and i'll go thru the weeds again and see if such part is there. i know there is no rear end, no hood, and it's been sitting in the weeds exposed to the elements for at least 10 years.

and now that i've done my part for you, if you happen to know, can you let me know:

-are the MGC front disc brakes the same as big Healeys and TR6s ?

-will the MGC front disc brake assemblies fit on on an MGA/MGB ?

-is there a noticeable difference in stopping power once the "C" disc brakes are fitted to an "A" or "B" ?

May your wigwam be filled with the happiness of abundant MG parts.
regards, lee

Yes with the caveat they are either 16P or 16PB and not 16PB metric as per later TR6.
Anything can be done...for a price or with time or both.
Probably and especially if you also installed the MGC twin servos.

Might consider installing a servo first to "test" how well IT does. I have a smaller 4 cyl version of my PBR servo which would work on a single line brake master or two if you have a dual set up. These are remote style servos as found on MGC and Tiger and later AHealeys.

Lee,

What, exactly, is your goal here? Street driving? Track driving? Something else?

Larger discs & calipers from an MGC might be worth a shot for track use, but a booster fitted to provide power brakes, as mentioned above, might be a better choice if your goal is reduced pedal force required for street driving.

I doubt that fitting the MGC brakes will provide any significant benefit over MGB brakes for street driving, because the biggest problem you'll have is keeping the wheels from locking up, especially on an MGA!

So, what's your goal?

Tom

All of my weekends are 'reat except when it rains and then they are wet.

As for your A. I kinda like your idea but I think you may be taking on a lot when a servo and ceramic pads would get you there with ease. Either one would be an good upgrade AND keep the components OEM.
An MGB swap is much easier and you benefit from cheaper B parts. Not so with the C. I think you may have to go all the way with a spindle transplant inorder to achieve what you want. While the A and B are quite similar the C is totally designed for that car.

Send me a PM is you need any A B C or LBC parts...its what I do.

I like your thoughts but feel trying to transplant a set of C brakes on an A or B would be difficult at the least. There are no interchangable parts to speak of as you will need the C spindle which is a torsion bar susp. etc. I dont think the discs from a C will bolt on a B hub either.

Probably better off upgrading your current A or B set up with available parts, orig or after market.

Now the calipers are the same as the AH3000, so are available. MGC uses a Girling setup where a A or B uses a Lockheed one.

As far as stopping power, dont know as I have never heard of someone doing this particular conversion, most just go out and buy a new set of upgraded calipers and associated parts.

Cheers Ron

No.

And not worth the bother anyway as several have pointed out.

The MGB calipers that you already have are adequate for anything you can throw at it. I converted to those calipers on my TVR race car, which originally used the Austin Healey Girlings, but in a pad pattern that wasn't easily available in competition compounds (tons of pad choices for MGBs). I threw more at that car on the track than anyone in their right mind on the street would EVER get near and it never faded.

Too many people keep wanting to upgrade what doesn't need upgradingm, while neglecting things that would be useful improvements.

I have it on good authority that that has never been done, Ralph... ;-)~

(Besides, some things are too much fun not to try.)

The brakes on the MGC are too far away from MGB to bother trying to use them, although the thicker discs they used on the MGB V8 can be bolted on, as can Austin Princess calipers, if you really want to.
