I can't figure out how to route the speedo cable down thru the body and into the angle drive on the tranny. I put in a lot of insulation in the interior, did I cover up the hole?

It goes through the back of the firewall and down to the speedometer drive on the tailshaft of the transmission. RAY

There should be two holes just above the steering column. the cable needs to go thru the one on the right. It also must past the engine bay bulkhead which is a separate wall. That hole is much bigger, probably because early cars had a cable driven tach. I find it is best to tape the cable to a stiff wire (coat hanger) to help guide it thru both holes.
