Any ideas as to what might be causing the back fire. I have rebuilt the carb and checked for leaks. Could the timing be set too high? Or is the carb to rich or lean?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Backfiring (coughing/spitting) through the car is a lean fuel mixture condition.

Backfiring through the exhaust is usually an indication of the carb being set too rich.

Other things like valve adjustments and timing, spark plug heat range, exhaust and intake gasket/fitting leaks and such can play into it as well.

You really ought to go over all of your engine settings one by one and get them correct as soon as you can.

Mark

Does it backfire only when you turn the ignition off?

Also, does the engine run on after you turn the ignition off or just shut down immediately & backfire?

What Weber carb do you have?

Too many unknowns, more info needed...

Hi Mark,

Whatever is causing it - may I respectfully suggest getting it sorted pretty quickly.

My chickens live in a 1972 Alfa 2600 shell - it was once a fine and quick car that I enjoyed greatly - a back fire through the air cleaners caused a fire ..............................

Although this is a recognised Alfa problem, webers is webers. I was told that the foam air cleaners get a mist of fuel in them, and that is very easy to ignite.

Kind regards,

Chris.

My friend lost his TR8 in a car fire as well. a back fire through the Weber foam air-cleaner and that was it !

The filter element is pretty much foam shaped gasoline. It ignites with just a spark, same as the Edlebrock copies. Loads of info/comments on the web about this.

Dave,
Yes the car will keep running for a short time after I turn it off. In most cases, if it turn the key back on and then off again, it will stop. The carb is a Weber DGV manual choke 32/36.

Until you fix the problem, turn car off in gear and immediately release the clutch to stop the engine.

Where do you have the idle speed & ignition timing set?

Could be just in need of a bit of adjustment...

Dave, I cant tell. We had to send the tach out to be repaired. It got fried with the rest of the wiring system. I'm trying to find someone local that might have a portable one. I know it is higher then is should be. Still need some work on the carb I think. I may breakdown and take it to a mechanic that remembers how a carb works.

My Weber backfired once too many times through the carb and once without the aircleaner mounted shot a flame straight up to my hood which had a melted-paint mark on both sides to remind me to continue tuning.

Hey..if you've melted part of your car's wiring you may have something that has bit the dust like the HI wire to the dizzy or the choke wire to the carb, if electric choke.
