70 midget shifter moves feels OK car won't start with shifter in neutral unless clutch depressed (feels like its in gear)when you try to move car it makes nasty clunking noise. Transmission time? If so anyone have a good one near new York. help!

Clunking could be U joints on drive shaft. Can you wiggle the drive shaft and get a lot of movement? Put rear end on jack stands, start motor and see if you are really in neutral or not. Applying brakes with it in neutral will tell you if you have neutral or not (wheels will stop rotating). Shifting through the gears will give you more info. Block the front wheels for movement in both directions when you do this.

Rodger is right on. I had a vibration that drive me crazy but the u joints looked perfect. I changed them out for heavy duty Moog U Joints and now there is no vibration. I also changed the transmission and the rear diff oil seal at the same time.

48 years ago I had a Morris Minor transmision that would stay in reverse even if shifter was in neutral position. PO installed detents wrong. See if you can figure out if it is in gear, any gear although shifter is in neutral. If it is in reverse you can pull the drain plug, of course all the oil will drain out, then with a flashlight you can see the reverse selector and move it to neutral with a screwdriver. If that is your problem, when using reverse be very careful to hold shift lever all the way to the right until into neutral or it will happen again.
