Harvard's prestigious debate team loses to NY inmates
Published October 06, 2015Associated Press
BOSTON – A group of New York inmates has toppled Harvard's prestigious debate team.
It took place at the Eastern New York Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Napanoch. The Ivy League undergrads were invited last month to debate the inmates who take in-prison courses taught by Bard College faculty.
Harvard's team won the national title this year and the world championship in 2014.
But the inmates are building a reputation, too. The club has notched victories against teams from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the University of Vermont.
Against Harvard, the inmates were tasked with defending the position that public schools should be allowed to turn away students whose parents came to the U.S. illegally. Harvard's team responded, but a panel of neutral judges declared the inmates victorious.

People should understand that there are not only "thugs" in the prisons, but MD's, attorneys, stock brokers, cops etc...Not ALL inmates are ignorant street level criminals. Doesn't surprise me.

73 MGB. Tires: Round, black, hold air. Oil: Sometimes old, sometimes new...always slippery. Oil filter: Yellow, usually full of oil. Carbs: 2 SU HIF. Distributor: Yes. Headlights: Not that bright but bright enough. A bunch of other stuff most cars have but not really important enough to itemize. Oh, wait...it has a cool sounding exhaust with stickers on the chrome tips. Really slays the ladies...

Adjudication of debates is formulaic and strict.....it's not a wishy washy TV show with a worm and viewer feedback. It is very much a verbal joust with Speaker 1 laying the foundation, Speaker 2 cementing that foundation and supplying some rebuttal, whilst speaker 3 provides all rebuttal and closing summary. The responding team have a distinct advantage.
Each speaker is judged on the following:
The categories for judging shall be:
•Content - 10 marks
•Delivery - 10 marks
•Arguments made - 5 marks
•Rebuttals - 5 marks
•Teamwork - 5 marks
•Time Keeping - 5 marks
•Overall Impression - 10 marks
Total - 50 marks

1968 MGB Purchased already dis-assembled but which is largely back together so I'm a lot less ignorant.

You mean that in a real debate there's something other than "If you don't believe like I do you must be an idiot"?
Hard to understand that concept.
“Ideological certainty easily degenerates into an insistence upon ignorance". Daniel Patrick Moynihan
In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.
Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.
