was wondering if a complete steering rack from a 71 B would go straight into my 64 B or are they different ?
cheers

If different, the changes are negligible. Go ahead.

I hadn't posted anything yet, but you should be fine. Only RB vs CB you have a problem.

1968 MGB Purchased already dis-assembled but which is largely back together so I'm a lot less ignorant.

Essentially the rack on the first car and the last differed only in the length of the shaft the RB being longer than the CB, so yes, a 71 will bolt straight onto a 74.

They accommodated the rack on the RB car by using asymmetric mountings on the cross member.

There were a couple of different ratios but that's incidental and nothing to do with actually fitting.

Although I haven't tried it I see no reason in principal why a short shaft from a CB car could not be fitted to a rack from a RB one or vice-versa, I will get around to proving it one day and I have spares of both racks to experiment with.

Don't bother, Ernie. The RB rack internals are not interchangeable with the CB rack. The gear ratio is different and the angle of the gear cut itself is also different (that's why you need to shorten the pinion shaft on a RB rack when you use a CB cross member...can't merely replace it).

Even your memory works to fool you, as you selectively retain what you believe in, and subtly mask any memories that might conflict."
