That would not be a rat rod, it would be a nice MGA with a terrible paint job.
Tell your buddy to go soak his head!

yeah Bill, I have been thinking about that too.Maybe sand blasting or media blasting .I think it was left out in the rain after sanding before it could be painted, Its like that all over ,inside and under neath too. I have been sanding it off and on but it will need lots of work to get it ready for primer Terry

In reply to # 3645363 by mg1622 ........................My friend who is a rod guy thinks I should clear coat it and leave it as a rat rod.??? Terry.....................

Well there was an MGA here in CT years ago that was similar in look: the body was rust with no paint or sealer while the doors, hood & trunk were highly polished aluminum; no interior other than seats and dash. I saw this car a couple of times but never talked to the owner; car disappeared from events so I'm not sure if the look was permanent, or just a phase before being painted. It did however attract a lot of attention.

Lance, that's all NO's so far even from me. It would not be a good thing to do .I think it would ruin the car,Did put it out there as my friend did suggest it ,kinda tongue in cheek I think.Terry

I don't think I would sand blast it. That would be too aggressive because there is no paint there. Try to find a place that could soda blast it. You just need to remove that light surface rust. It should make a nice car when done.

Keep us posted.

Looks like it could be in Wyatt’s collection if finished like that.....

Etching fluid. Spray it on and let it do its work. I did a camaro with similar issues and used the same stuff. Paint job is still holding up

To me, patina is what happens to the paint over time, not just bare metal left to rust. Here are a few pics of "Little *****", inspired by Wyatt and others on the forum who have less than "perfect" MGAs.
'57 1500 with 1600 engine. TR7 wheels. Glass pack muffler. Gets lots of thumbs up and cool car comments every time I take her out.My girlfriend loves it! BTW, I also have a '56 1500 which will be getting a good driver quality restoration in the future. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate high quality restorations, I just don't want one, and I'm having way too much fun with this little car just the way it is. Also when I get time I am giving it a racing inspired number, FE2O3.

Gotta agree with you Stan. That looks like a fun ride. I restored a 1600 and was afraid to park it at the mall.Cart dings, door dents,Etc.until I accidently gouged it with a screwdriver and a grandson scraped a bike handle down the side. Then I just drove it and enjoyed it.Terry
