Once again,I am picking your collective brains regarding a job to be done.I will be removing the rear brake drums to replace the brake shoes soon, and am wondering about the amount of grease that I should put in to the drum hubs before replacing the drums. Its on a 1969 Morris 1100.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Joe.

Hi Joe
I'm afraid I go a little against the advice in the book. The book says pack the bearings then the gap between the bearings and the seals but leave the center void empty along with the grease cap. I follow it all but I do put about a a teaspoon full in the grease cap. The theory is that if the bearings are fully packed as they get hot the grease will melt out once everything is coated and fill the voids to the point that its supposed to be but I just always add a little extra grinning smiley
cheers
Barri

in the MGB forum its a 1971 MGB - pretty standard unless the PO screwed it up. if I'm posting in the 1100 & 1300 forum its a 1965 MG 1100

Many thanks Barrie, once again you are a mine of information and I will certainly follow your advice. One final query on this subject. When I took off the drums to check if shoes needed replacing,I saw that a previous owner had fitted the shoe pull-off springs on the side of the shoes facing the drum.Is that the way they should be,or behind facing the backplate? If I remember from working on MGBs,the springs were fitted behind facing the backplate.Of course on a 1100 they may be different.Once again,Barrie, thanks very much.
Joe.
