The wife and I bought our first mgb today. It is a 1970 with the T-9 5 speed conversion.
First project is replacing the pinion seal. It looked moist when I looked the car over before buying and now that it is home it is leaving a few drips on the garage floor. Read a few past posts and this seems pretty straightforward. But I would appreciate any tips or words of wisdom.
Second project is teaching the wife to drive a manual transmission. Not as straightforward a project as the pinion seal. Words of wisdom or tips are appreciated!

Suggest a Haynes manual or Bentley manual. Never replaced a pinion seal in a B. But have in other cars. Not overly difficult. Make sure you record how the driveshaft is oriented and reinstall correctly. May as well replace the u joints while it is out. Impact gun to loosen the nut on the pinion flange. Seal hook to pull the old seal or a small slide hammer screwed into the metal face of the seal. Don't use an impact gun to put the flange back on. Some older rear axles have a crush sleeve that sets pinion depth. Use a half inch drive ratchet then torque wrench. Good luck. Nice looking B!

Welcome to the forum Bill. I'm lucky to have a wife who prefers a standard transmission. She takes to my 6 speed Acura like a duck to water and was very disappointed to find out you can't get a Volvo wagon with a standard tranny. But no instructions on that; she came to me that way!

Don't yell at her.
Don't yell at her.
Good luck with that. You'll think you're talking in a calm voice, she'll think you're yelling at her. Just the way it is.

Ok, here is a female view on the subject. Show her how it works by you driving it, then she can try it. Pick a parking lot where there arn't any cars so, no stress. Let her try to drive-be calm if there is some gear grinding noises. Now, once she can shift even 1 time successfully, leave her alone to practice. This is where you go buy a diamond bracelet for her because we all know you probably will like driving an old British car and hanging out with the guys a lot more than she will! You can simply pay it forward.

Beautiful B...my first was a '70. I think the split rear bumper with the lowered license plate looks the best. Odd that they only did that one year. A lot of "firsts" and "lasts" with the '70.
I have a '72 now, so I at least have the fishmouth.
