In addition to the stuff before, I bounced the rubble of the oil leak by rounding off the inside corner of the gasket. My purpose was to match the curve of the metal case. The gasket is square in cross-section but the area that it sits in is not. By using a Dremel with a sanding drum, I shaped the gasket to match the curve of the metal, taking special care with the corner areas.
When finished, the gasket sits flat on the side cover and doesn't try to creep up and out. When using adhesive, put a little up the vertical side as well as the flat portion. Don't go too far up the vertical side because you don't want to expose the adhesive to the engine atmosphere.

In the picture below: At the top of the side cover is a gasket cut open to show the curved inner side. The other cover is flipped to show the safety wire tab. It doesn't show up well in the black paint.

Is the cork type gasket no longer available for the front side cover?

As far as I know, the cork gaskets are still being sold. I just have a thing against the cork.

This may be a stupid question, but I've never had my side covers off. Is the square hole on the back of the cover where the mesh goes? Is that hole there or did you cut it in?

That hole is the way it is built. You can just see the wire mesh oil separator up inside there.
