SU. HIF-4. Should be a tag on them someplace indicating AUD493, 550 or 630

Thanks! I'll look for the tag when I get the car back this week. Any suggestions on resources for the rebuild? I'm also going to be doing a distributor rebuild...
Thanks again,
Kelley

Joe mentioned above for parts hif4

Jeff at advanced distributor ship it off and have him recurve and rebuild it.

Thanks! I'll check both out. I was looking forward to attempting the distributor rebuild myself, but it sounds like maybe I wont be able to do that...?

Hif4 carbs are easy parts swap rebuilds and adjustment,
Distributor rebuild takes more than parts swapping, not that it cn't be done and renewd but Jeff has the machines and tools and springs, and weights and makes them tuned to modern fuels and state of tune the engine build demands. Better than new.

Welcome Kelley.
Good advice offered. Not knowing your skill level, however the carburetors can be refreshed by yourself, the distributor is an whole other animal. Jeff can & will serve you well.
The identity tag for the carburetor type is a a small rectangular tag with numbers on it fixed to one of the dashpot fasteners.

Kelly,

I have not rebuilt HIF carbs so am not so familiar with them as I am the HS4/6. I believe these have the throttle valve spindle bushings just like the HS4. I would recommend sending the stripped down carbs to Mr. Curto and have him line ream out the old bushings and install new ones for you. This will eliminate any vacuum leak caused by worn shafts/bushings. You can do the rest of the rebuild yourself. I just had the HS6 carbs for my MGC done by Mr. Curto. The cost for the new shafts/bushings/throttle valves was about $125. He sent me the rest of the kit to complete the rebuild. The grand total (including the rebuild kits/bushing & shaft installation/shipping) was just under $300 as I remember.

The engine now purrs like a kitten...

The tags for the carbs would normally be under the outer cover bolts but more than half the time they seem to be missing.

HIF's are well known for their long life and do not suffer the same degree of shaft wear as the earlier HS so may well not need a rebuild beyond what you can do yourself with the available service kit.

As an example mine have over 320,000 miles on them but apart from new jets, needles, and plain butterflies close to 30 years and at approx. 100,000 miles have essentially not been touched since.

You could always try SU. http://sucarb.co.uk/ I've just revuilt my HIF4s using their kit. It comes with a complete set of parts and a detailed instruction leaflet. Whilst you're at it change the throttle discs for solid ones without the over run valves. They breathe better and you fix a lot of idle speed issues at the same time.

Kelly,

There are several different kits available. Some are "minor", just gaskets and the like, some are "major" which include new shafts, throttle butterflies, etc. Just google HIF 4 rebuild kit and shop around. No pun intended against David in the above post but there is no need (nor savings) to order direct from the UK...

Paul

P.S. Remember that an HIF is an HIF (other than your specific jet/needle). It doesn't matter what engine it is mounted to. If you have any doubts call the supplier before making the purchase.

Most recommend getting the electrics to spec before messing with (tuning) the carbs.
